Film noir (/fɪlm nwɑːr/; French pronunciation: [film nwaʁ]) is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly such that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classical film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Great Depression.
The term film noir, French for "black film" (literal) or "dark film" (closer meaning), first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, was unrecognized by most American film industry professionals of that era. Cinema historians and critics defined the category retrospectively. Before the notion was widely adopted in the 1970s, many of the classic films noirs were referred to as melodramas. Whether film noir qualifies as a distinct genre is a matter of ongoing debate among scholars.

The movie "Woman on the Run" is a 1950 film noir crime film directed by Norman Foster starring Ann Sheridan and Dennis O'Keefe. The film was based on the April 1948 short story Man on the Run by Sylvia Tate and filmed on location in San Francisco, California. Plot: As the film opens, a man, Frank Johnson (Ross Elliott), is walking his dog in the city at night. He witnesses a man in a car talking about a crime. The man then gets shot. But whoever shot that man then sees Frank and shoots at him. The shot misses, however, because it is mistakenly aimed at Frank's shadow. The killer then flees in the car. When the police arrive it is explained that the shooting victim was going to testify in a court case against a gangster. Since Frank saw the shooter, the cops now want Frank to testify. The...

I'm an island
Everyone can see that I'm an island
I've got ocean just about
Everywhere that I can see
So I'll be stranded unless you come to me
And I'm lonely
I would rather fall from grace completely,
than let you change my mind
I would rather bet my life against the rising of the sun.
Can't be too careful
About the friends you keep around you
Some won't ever let you down
Some who'll fail you every day?
And it's a blatant disrespect of privacy
It enrages me
But I would rather fall from grace completely,
than let you change my mind
I would rather bet my life against the rising of the sun.
I'm an island
Can't you understand me I'm an Island
And I'm finally by myself
The way I've got to be
Now that's exactly the thing that's been killing me
I would rather fall from grace completely,
than let you change my mind
And I would rather bet my life against the rising of the sun
