East Timor (i/ˌiːst ˈtiːmɔːr/) or Timor-Leste (/tiˈmɔːr ˈlɛʃteɪ/), Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a sovereign state in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The country's size is about 15,410 km2 (5,400 sq mi).
East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially FRETILIN) and the Indonesian military.
Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor, on the eastern part, and Indonesia, on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District. The island covers an area of 30,777 square kilometres. The name is a variant of timur, Malay for "east"; it is so called because it lies at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Anthropologists identify eleven distinct ethno-linguistic groups in Timor. The largest are the Atoni of western Timor, and the Tetum of central and eastern Timor. Most indigenous Timorese languages belong to the Timor–Babar branch of the Austronesian languages spoken throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The non-Austronesian languages are thought to be related to languages spoken on Halmahera and in Western New Guinea. Some are so mixed it is difficult to tell which family they descend from.
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.
East Timorese may refer to:
San Marino (i/sæn məˈriːnoʊ/; Italian: [sam maˈriːno]), officially the Republic of San Marino (Italian: Repubblica di San Marino), also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino (Italian: Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino), is an enclaved microstate surrounded by Italy, situated on the Italian Peninsula on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains. Its size is just over 61 km2 (24 sq mi) and has an estimated population of about 32,000. Its capital is the City of San Marino and its largest city is Dogana. San Marino has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe.
San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, as the continuation of the monastic community founded on 3 September 301, by stonecutter Marinus of Arba. Legend has it that Marinus left Rab, then the Roman colony of Arba, in 257 when the future emperor Diocletian issued a decree calling for the reconstruction of the city walls of Rimini, which had been destroyed by Liburnian pirates.

Premier Ted Baillieu’s ANZAC Day message. TRANSCRIPT: On 25th April 1915 a group of young Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, confronted by steep cliffs, hostile guns and the unknown. It was the start of a gruelling campaign that saw gallantry, courage, bloodshed and sacrifice. And it marked a coming of age for two very young nations, who sent their young men across the globe to fight – many sadly never to return. 97 years on, none of the men who fought that war remain. But their commitment to their nation has become symbolic of Australian values: mateship, common purpose and standing up for the principles we all share. Those are the qualities we honour when we think of Anzac Cove almost a century ago. And they are also the qualities we remember...

We talked About Everything I had two things that helped me. One was – I had a group of people around me who kept me talking … talking … talking. What did we talk about? We talked about everything. We talked about my life with the girls, my life without the girls, we talked about the girls, we talked about me, we talked about my family, we talked about my family before. We talked about every possible thing you could think about. If You Don’t Talk What Do You Tend To Do? You see, the thing is, if you don’t talk about things what do you tend to do? That’s right isn’t it – bottle it up, push it down, keep it internal. The conscious mind doesn’t handle it any more. But which mind is handling it now? The subconscious mind, and the subconscious mind is like the dream mind as well. So n...

Lieutenant General David Morrison, Chief of Army, gave a speech last night at a dinner hosted by ASPI and Boeing in Canberra.\ LTGEN Morrison reflected on the 113 year history of the Australian Defence Force to provide top-down strategic commentary on the future challenges and opportunities for the Army. Themes of his address included maritime strategy, military contributions to statecraft, Australian alliance relationships and the joint capabilities of the ADF. LTGEN Morrison commented on Australia's maritime history. He lamented a lack of appreciation amongst the Australian public on the reality of sustaining Australia's maritime conditions. Based on its geography, Australian survival depended on the sea - even in peacetime - however area sea control will always be unachievable for Aus...

This talk will discuss the role of observers/monitors and witnesses in international and national criminal tribunals in Indonesia, Cambodia, East Timor, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone. Witness testimony plays a central role in tribunals and truth commissions, but numerous problems arise in evaluating witness testimony as well as in connection with the experience of witnesses in interaction with these institutions. Drawing on experience from a number of past or ongoing justice processes in the aftermath of mass atrocity we will examine how the reception and experience of witnessing differs in various contexts, from closed to open hearings, from victim to insider testimony, and from investigation to trial. David Cohen is Professor in the Graduate School at UC Berkeley, Professor of Law at the Uni...
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid high tributes to Pakistani peacekeepers for their service under the UN flag in hot spots around the world, saying they had made "remarkable contribution" in maintaining peace coupled with helping families and communities suffering from war. "I have personally met brave Pakistani men and women who serve proudly in some of our toughest missions around the world. They are truly an inspiration," the UN chief said at an exhibition of photographs celebrating more than 50 years of Pakistan's participation in UN peacekeeping operations. The exhibition followed a debate on UN peacekeeping in the Security Council convened by Pakistan, which hold the presidency of the 15-member body for the month of January. The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One - recorded at The Australian National University, 1 June 2009. In the first few years of the post-9/11 era, the established models for fighting small wars proved distressingly ineffective against resilient insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. As the insurgents fought Western armies to a stalemate, it was clear that a new approach was necessary. Dr David Kilcullen, a former Australian army officer, and one of the worlds most influential experts on guerrilla warfare, became a key architect of the Wests revamped military strategy. As the senior advisor to General David Patraeus in Iraq, Kilcullens revolutionary approach to counterinsurgency was an intellectual foundation for the Surge of 2007. Kilcullen will uncove...
Sandalwood trees are evergreen
Cut them down
Plant coffee beans
Build no schools
Construct no roads
Mark them as fools
Let ignorance rule
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
Red is the cross that covers out shame
Every Kingdom, every land
Has it's heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
In coral sands
On golden shores
Buried are those
Who lived their lives
No place to hide for
Father and child
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
We shake the hands that kill and forgive
Every Kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
On barren graves
Where flowers won't grow
Blooms our Red cross lovingly
This nightingale deed
So we can be free
Stranded on their island
This army of the silent
We toast our own goodwill and forget
Every kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
