INTRODUCTION:
North Korea tested intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) named HWASONG-14 on Friday that appears to have the range to hit major US cities.
North Korea now has tested this ICBM twice in July and what is most alarming is the fact that the latest test seems to show that the Hwasong-14 missile can travel even more distance that previously thought.
Pyongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday that the test was designed to show the Hwasong-14's maximum range with a "large-sized heavy nuclear warhead".
It added that Washington should regard the launch as a "grave warning."
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes the latest missile test by North Korea and evaluates its implications.

ACTUAL RANGE:
A combination of US, South Korean and Japanese analyses of the launch from Mupyong-ni, near North Korea's border with China, shows the missile flew about 47 minutes, going 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) high and for a distance of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
According to David Wright, a missile expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, if the missile were fired on a flatter, standard trajectory, it would have major US cities like Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago well within its range, with possibly the ability to reach as far as New York and Boston.
Kim Dong-yub, a defense analyst at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University in Seoul said:
“Depending on how heavy a warhead it carries, this latest North Korean missile would easily reach the West Coast of the United States with a range of 9,000 to 10,000 kilometers,” or 5,600 to 6,200 miles. He added, “With this missile, North Korea leaves no doubt that its missile has a range that covers most of the United States.”
NO IMPACT OF ANY PRESSURE
There were indications earlier this week that nuclear-armed North Korea was preparing for another ballistic missile test.
Some experts had predicted the communist nation would launch the test on Thursday to mark Victory Day, a military holiday but was delayed one day due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Regardless, the new test represents a setback in efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
International community and U.S has been trying to compel North Korea to give up its missile and nuke programs by enforcing sanctions, but these have failed.
China, North Korea's longtime ally, has been pressuring the regime to abandon these programs but so far has little to show for it.
Experts say North Korea currently is known to have the capability to send missiles to all of South Korea, Japan, as well as to Guam and the Hwasong-14 is a major step augmenting its strikes capabilities.
PARALLEL NUKE PROGRAM
A missile is as destructive as its warhead, which is why North Korea is running missiles and nuke program in parallel.
In total North Korea has conducted 5 nuclear tests till now.
The first nuke test was conducted by North Korea on Oct. 8, 2006. As per the United States analysts, it had a yield of less than one kiloton of TNT.
Blasts have become more powerful since then.
The device tested by the North, in January 2016, had a force equivalent of 7 kilotons of TNT.
By contrast, the device detonated on Sept 2016 looks to have had a force equivalent of 25 kilotons of TNT, according to the most analysis.
CLOSER TO MAJOR GOAL:
The ultimate goal is to have ICBM with a range to reach whole of US carrying nuclear warhead.
North Korea now seems to have more or less perfected the missile technology.
US official familiar with the latest intelligence assessment confirmed that North Korea would have a deployable solution in place by 2018.
IMPLICATION
It can be said that the US and international community no longer has a ticking clock, but the time has actually run out.
North Korea has cleared the major technical hurdles and as time goes by they will refine the systems in term of accuracy, readiness and reliability.
CONCLUSION
North Korean state media was quick to tout the missile test as a success, with video and stills showing Kim Jong Un overseeing the launch and celebrating with the troops involved.
Kim is quoted as saying "the whole US mainland" is now within North Korea's reach. He called Pyongyang's weapons program "a precious asset" that cannot be reversed nor replaced, according to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Hours after that call, the US and South Korean military conducted a live fire exercise as a show of force in response to the missile test.
Both militaries conducted a similar show of force, after North Korea's first test in early July.
South Korea said on Saturday it will proceed with the deployment of 4 additional units of the THAAD anti-missile defense system.
As Trump administration grapple with the situation with no signs of having plans of direct negotiations, there is no reason to expect a quick breakthrough.

The United States flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after recent North Korean missile tests, the US Air Force said in a statement on Sunday.
North Korea said it conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday that proved its ability to strike America's mainland, drawing a sharp warning from US President Donald Trump.
The B-1B flight, conducted on Saturday, was in direct response to the missile test and the previous July 3 launch of the "Hwansong-14" rocket, the US statement said. The bombers took off from a US air base in Guam, and were joined by Japanese and South Korean fighter jets during the exercise, according to the statement.

Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

The result is that the power of a nuclear explosion to rupture hardened structures is greatly decreased by the distance from the impact point of the nuclear weapon. So a near-direct hit is generally necessary, as only diminishing returns are gained by increasing bomb yield.

Pyongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday that the test was designed to show the Hwasong-14's maximum range with a "large-sized heavy nuclear warhead".
It added that Washington should regard the launch as a "grave warning."

ACTUAL RANGE:
A combination of US, South Korean and Japanese analyses of the launch from Mupyong-ni, near North Korea's border with China, shows the missile flew about 47 minutes, going 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) high and for a distance of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
According to David Wright, a missile expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, if the missile were fired on a flatter, standard trajectory, it would have major US cities like Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago well within its range, with possibly the ability to reach as far as New York and Boston.
Kim Dong-yub, a defense analyst at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University in Seoul said:
“Depending on how heavy a warhead it carries, this latest North Korean missile would easily reach the West Coast of the United States with a range of 9,000 to 10,000 kilometers,” or 5,600 to 6,200 miles. He added, “With this missile, North Korea leaves no doubt that its missile has a range that covers most of the United States.”
NO IMPACT OF ANY PRESSURE
There were indications earlier this week that nuclear-armed North Korea was preparing for another ballistic missile test.
Some experts had predicted the communist nation would launch the test on Thursday to mark Victory Day, a military holiday but was delayed one day due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Regardless, the new test represents a setback in efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
International community and U.S has been trying to compel North Korea to give up its missile and nuke programs by enforcing sanctions, but these have failed.
China, North Korea's longtime ally, has been pressuring the regime to abandon these programs but so far has little to show for it.
Experts say North Korea currently is known to have the capability to send missiles to all of South Korea, Japan, as well as to Guam and the Hwasong-14 is a major step augmenting its strikes capabilities.
PARALLEL NUKE PROGRAM
A missile is as destructive as its warhead, which is why North Korea is running missiles and nuke program in parallel.
In total North Korea has conducted 5 nuclear tests till now.
The first nuke test was conducted by North Korea on Oct. 8, 2006. As per the United States analysts, it had a yield of less than one kiloton of TNT.
Blasts have become more powerful since then.
The device tested by the North, in January 2016, had a force equivalent of 7 kilotons of TNT.
By contrast, the device detonated on Sept 2016 looks to have had a force equivalent of 25 kilotons of TNT, according to the most analysis.
CLOSER TO MAJOR GOAL:
The ultimate goal is to have ICBM with a range to reach whole of US carrying nuclear warhead.
North Korea now seems to have more or less perfected the missile technology.
US official familiar with the latest intelligence assessment confirmed that North Korea would have a deployable solution in place by 2018.
IMPLICATION
It can be said that the US and international community no longer has a ticking clock, but the time has actually run out.
North Korea has cleared the major technical hurdles and as time goes by they will refine the systems in term of accuracy, readiness and reliability.
CONCLUSION
North Korean state media was quick to tout the missile test as a success, with video and stills showing Kim Jong Un overseeing the launch and celebrating with the troops involved.
Kim is quoted as saying "the whole US mainland" is now within North Korea's reach. He called Pyongyang's weapons program "a precious asset" that cannot be reversed nor replaced, according to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Hours after that call, the US and South Korean military conducted a live fire exercise as a show of force in response to the missile test.
Both militaries conducted a similar show of force, after North Korea's first test in early July.
South Korea said on Saturday it will proceed with the deployment of 4 additional units of the THAAD anti-missile defense system.
As Trump administration grapple with the situation with no signs of having plans of direct negotiations, there is no reason to expect a quick breakthrough.

US Bombers Fly over Korean Peninsula in response to North’s 2nd ICBM tests
The United States flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after recent North Korean missile tests, the US Air Force said in a statement on Sunday.
North Korea said it conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday that proved its ability to strike America's mainland, drawing a sharp warning from US President Donald Trump.
The B-1B flight, conducted on Saturday, was in direct response to the missile test and the previous July 3 launch of the "Hwansong-14" rocket, the US statement said. The bombers took off from a US air base in Guam, and were joined by Japanese and South Korean fighter jets during the exercise, according to the statement.

North Korea has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile, which it says has the ability to strike the ‘entire’ US mainland.
This launch comes weeks after the country tested a similar projectile, also capable of hitting parts of the US.
But defence and intelligence leaders in the US and South Korea have said they do not believe Kim Jong-un's military has the required capabilities yet.

We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace. This clip documents a day trip to the Joint Security Area at the border that divides the Korean Peninsula. A tourist bus starts from Seoul and stops at an observatory near the Freedom Bridge where tourists can peer into the North. Simply avoid these topics if you can.

The ground started to shake and ripple under your feet as the tanks started to roll by,the street filled with thick clouds of diesel fumes.Alongside the thunderous noise you could still here the cheering. large groups of school children were trying to out sing or out screen each other, parents, grandparents waving plastic flowers some resembling mechanical toys,they lined the streets for as far as you could see.The tanks were followed by missile launchers,rockets, artillary canons and finally a never ending convoy of open top trucks filled with cheering soldiers.the whole parade had been delayed for hours due to a few clouds in the sky so by the time it had passed by it was completly dark.Finally as the convoy started to thin out the heavens opened up.the wind picked up and it poured down.For a while everyone remained in place and kept cheering what was left of the Korean Peoples Army and then like a giant herd of startled wilderbeast everyone was on the move.I took refuge in the middle of a brass band who had held their ground.The police were still frantically blowing their whistles trying to keep some order,in this chaos the brass band were still playing.I looked around it looked like a scene from Titanic.
At some point I felt a hand on my shoulder,It was a very relieved Mr Pak my Korean guide,he told me the whole group had been waiting on the bus for over an hour to leave.Too bad I thought knowing to well that going to A mass parade is the only opportunity your ever get as a tourist to wander around freely on your own in the highly controlled state of The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea

This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong.
We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace.
We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. Here we saw a rural side of China; seeing the scenic view from 20 Yuan note, visiting a Dragon Trip's tour guide's family farm, have a cooking class, cycle through the mountains and farmland, float down the Yulong River on a bamboo raft and see the traditional Cormorant bird Fishing.
After Yangshuo we travelled to Chengdu; the heart of the West of China. We visited the largest building in the world the Global Center and saw pandas at the worlds biggest, Giant Panda Breeding & Research Center.
We then explored Xi'An seeing the Terracotta Warriors and cycling around the Ming Dynasty City Walls. After Xi'An we visited Dengfeng home of the Shaolin Monks and had a Kungfu lesson at a Children’s Home run by the Shaolin Temple.
Next we returned to Beijing seeing the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium, hiked an unrestored section of the Great Wall and visited the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.
From Beijing we travelled to Moganshan to hike to Moganshan Peak, see Chairman Mao’s previous summer residence and swim in a lagoon.
At the end of the Dragon Trip, we spent a week in Shanghai over Halloween. From Shanghai we flew to Hong Kong and while there took a ferry over to Macau.

The travel terminates in Panmunjeom within the JSA where guards and tourists stare at each other from both sides. The regulations allow tourists to carry nothing else than their cameras, the suitable equipment to be utilized in this "War Of Eyes" where filming and photographing is explicitely allowed.
The final highlight of the trip is a visit to the souvenir shop in the Demilitarized Zone where one can buy i.e. miniature dolls of soldiers, ginseng and uniforms.
