Rotterdam (/ˈrɒtərdæm/ or /ˌrɒtərˈdæm/;Dutch: [ˌrɔtərˈdɑm]) is a city in South Holland, the Netherlands, located geographically within the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt river delta at the North Sea. Its history goes back to 1270 when a dam was constructed in the Rotte river and people settled around it for safety. In 1340 Rotterdam was granted city rights by the Count of Holland and slowly grew into a major logistic and economic centre. Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 624,799 (2014, city proper), ranking second in the Netherlands. The Greater Rijnmond area is home to approximately 1.4 million people and the Rotterdam The Hague urban area makes for the 168th most populous urban area in the world. Rotterdam is part of the yet larger Randstad conurbation with a total population of 7,100,000.
The city of Rotterdam is known for the Erasmus University, riverside setting, lively cultural life and its maritime heritage. The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War II (known as the Rotterdam Blitz) has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam is home to some world-famous architecture from renowned architects like Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom, Ben van Berkel and others. Recently Rotterdam was listed 8th in The Rough Guide Top 10 Cities to Visit and was voted 2015 European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.
Allan B. Jacobs is an urban designer, renowned for his publications and research on urban design. His well-known paper "Towards an Urban Design Manifesto", written with Donald Appleyard, describes how cities should be laid out.
Prior to teaching at Berkeley, Professor Jacobs taught at the University of Pennsylvania, and worked on planning projects in the City of Pittsburgh and for the Ford Foundation in Calcutta, India, and spent eight years as Director of the San Francisco Department of City Planning. Honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Berkeley Citation, and the Kevin Lynch Award from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Jacobs taught in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley from 1975 until 2001, teaching courses in city planning and urban design and serving twice as the department's chair. He is currently a Professor emeritus. He is currently a consultant in city planning and urban design with projects in California, Oregon, and Brazil, among others.

Take a tour of Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, Netherlands -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. One of Rotterdam's most distinctive features, and its most famous, is the Erasmus Bridge. Its sleek design and white color have inspired its alternative moniker, the Swan. The main pylon of the bridge, to which the cables attach, is several hundred feet high. The Erasmus Bridge was finished in 1996 and connects the two sides of the city. Since its opening, it has gained ample recognition, and has been showcased in movies, races, and concerts. The bridge is open to pedestrians, allowing a first-hand look at its beauty.

Having flown into Amsterdam (Netherlands) that morning (November 22, 2015) from Toronto (Ontario/Canada), my colleague and I had the day to travel to and explore the city of Rotterdam (Netherlands) before meeting up with the rest of our delegation for our evening briefing. The Hop-On Hop-Off sight-seeing bus tour of the city was an excellent way to experience Rotterdam in a quick one hour driving tour that helped us in identifying the key areas of interest that we wanted to further explore. We finished our day with a private reception at Stadhuis, Rotterdam's City Hall, which is one of the few old buildings left in the centre of the city that miraculously survived the 1940 bombing raids.
Amsterdam and Rotterdam are the two largest cities in The Netherlands and offer tourists a variety of hidden and not so hidden treasures. While the Amsterdam tourist seeks comfort in many cliches such as the Red Light District and the coffeeshops, the Rotterdam tourist spends its time culturally and intellectually developing itself. From cube houses to the Erasmus bridge, Rotterdam astounds one tourist after the other. Don’t be too quick to choose Holland’s capital over Europe’s port; judge for yourself, which tourist do you think will survive evolution in the end? Mockumentary made for the course New Media Production about the Rotterdam tourist vs the Amsterdam tourist.

Paris - Amsterdam June, 23rd – July 2nd 2011 DAY 1 June 24: Paris-St Quentin. 1100 meter height, 170 theoretical, practical 185-214 km It was a shock to the system to start with the longest stage on the first day of the tour. In theory it should have been a 170km stage rolling through the crowded streets of Paris, then along the tree- lined canals of north of the city and then onto the rolling grain field of northern France. That was the theory. In practice riders went missing or split into groups and some covered up to 214km on the stage. An amazing effort. The day was picture-perfect in terms of weather and conditions. Former professional rider Andrea Ferragato lead the Allianz and Mondial riders, representing six different countries, five Mondial BUs and five Allianz OEs, along one of...
