Bujumbura (/ˌbuːdʒəmˈbʊərə/; French pronunciation: [buʒumbuʁa]), formerly Usumbura, is the capital, largest city, and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. It is on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world after Lake Baikal.
The city center is a colonial town with a large market, the national stadium, a large mosque, and the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Bujumbura. Museums in the city include the Burundi Museum of Life and the Burundi Geological Museum. Other nearby attractions include the Rusizi National Park, the Livingstone-Stanley Monument at Mugere (where David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley visited 14 days after their first historic meeting at Ujiji in Tanzania), the presidential palace and the source of the southernmost tributary of the Nile, described locally as the source of the Nile.
Ferries sail from Bujumbura to Kigoma in Tanzania. The city is home to the Bujumbura International Airport and the University of Burundi.
Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake. It is estimated to be the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, and the second deepest, in both cases, after only Lake Baikal in Siberia; it is also the world's longest freshwater lake. The lake is divided among four countries – Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Burundi, and Zambia, with Tanzania (46%) and DRC (40%) possessing the majority of the lake. The water flows into the Congo River system and ultimately into the Atlantic Ocean.
The name apparently refers to "Tanganika, 'the great lake spreading out like a plain', or 'plain-like lake'."
Lake Tanganyika is situated within the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, and is confined by the mountainous walls of the valley. It is the largest rift lake in Africa and the second largest lake by volume in the world. It is the deepest lake in Africa and holds the greatest volume of fresh water, accounting for 18% of the world's available fresh water. It extends for 676 km (420 mi) in a general north-south direction and averages 50 km (31 mi) in width. The lake covers 32,900 km2 (12,700 sq mi), with a shoreline of 1,828 km (1,136 mi), a mean depth of 570 m (1,870 ft) and a maximum depth of 1,470 m (4,820 ft) (in the northern basin). It holds an estimated 18,900 cubic kilometres (4,500 cu mi). It has an average surface temperature of 25 °C (77 °F) and a pH averaging 8.4.

Despite political tension in the country over unrest that has characterised Burundi in the recent past, normalcy is slowly returning to Bujumbura, the capital city. Bujumbura is a green city on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, whose wide paved streets, sandy beaches and new highrise buildings belie the scenes of violence that have been associated with it in international media since a failed coup attempt in May 2015. The city is also situated down the the rugged hills which bring a cool breeze coupled with a canopy of trees that keep Bujumbura fresh. Almost all roads in the town are well paved and there is hardly any dust. Some of the roads were constructed over 30 years ago and have no cracks or fissures. In the middle of town, the roads are smooth and all have street lights. The city...

Burundi Travel Video - Beautiful Burundi has been blighted by a generation of ethnic conflict, but with the advent of peace, this charming country may at long last be able to put its dark past to rest. A tiny little nation of soaring mountains and languid lakeside communities, Burundi is sandwiched between the African giants of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania. The scenery is stunning and the welcome warm, and it may once again begin to receive a trickle of travellers as the word gets out that the war is over. The steamy capital Bujumbura has a lovely location on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and just outside the city are some of the finest inland beaches on the continent. Ask the old Africa hands about Burundi before the war, and it is the sort of place they go misty-e...

I spent the entire month of August in Burundi, Africa on a missions trip with a non profit organization called Sister Connection. We worked with widows and orphans from all over the country, visiting homes, building relationships, and hosting camps (like VBS) for the kids. This is a compilation of video I took on the trip in an effort to capture what it was like to travel to one of the poorest countries on earth. Music: The Fountain by Vocal Few
Burundi's struggle with political instability continues to extract a heavy price on its already damaged economy, after violent unrest cost the country at least $ 32.7 million dollars in material damage. Tourism operators are now desperately looking for ways to turn around a sector whose fortunes have been wiped out.
some memories of my trip to Burundi set to Toto's Africa song.

Who's the Tutsi?
Who's the Hutu?
Why'd you shoot Kabushemeye?
Wish you'd never left the rugo
Whatcha doing in Bujumbura?
Life is fragile, we are frail
Here today and gone tomorrow
We don't want to live in jail
Been to hell in Bujumbura
Sans Echecs and Sans Defaite
Killing in the streets
Why don't no one stop it?
Why don't no one speak?
Mr. Bhoutrous-Bhoutrous Ghali,
give us all some reassurance
Why don't all the nations rally
Bring the peace to Bujumbura
Sans Echecs and Sans Defaite
Killing in the streets
Why don't no one stop it?
Why don't no one speak?
Who's the Tutsi?
Who's the Hutu?
Why'd you shoot Kabushemeye?
Wish you'd never left the rugo
