The present state of Senegal has its roots in European colonialism, which began during the mid-15th century, when various European powers began competing for trade in the area. The establishment of coastal trading posts gradually gave way to control of the mainland, culminating in French rule of the area by the 19th century, albeit amid much local resistance. Senegal peacefully attained independence from France in 1960, and has since been among the more politically stable countries in Africa.

Hair twists
Hair twists, flat twists, or mini-twists, are a hairstyle popular with Afro-textured hair in the United States, and sometimes with other hair textures. The style is achieved by dividing the hairs into several sections, twisting strands of hair, then twisting two twisted strands around one another. They can also be created with one strand of hair at a time, with a comb. They are not to be confused with larger, longer dreadlocks, (or "locs").
Twists can be made when naturally curly hair is still wet and somewhat relaxed from soaking with hot water; when the hair dries, it will shrink, creating a tightly woven texture to the hair twists. Twists can also be done with dry hair for a different texture. Twists can be combined with other hairstyles at the same time, such as afro-puffs and Afro.
In order to maintain twist hairstyles, wearers are advised by hairstylists to cover their hair with a headscarf or durag at night.
Twist out
A variation of hair twists is called a "twist out", where twisted hair is untwisted to create a large, loosely crimped texture, similar in appearance to hair crimping on Caucasian-textured hair that is ordinarily straight. There are two different variations to a "twist out," one method can be done with using two stands of hair and another method uses three stands of hair called a "three stand twist out". Both result in a textured hairstyle when untwisted.

La Isla de Gorea (en francés, Île de Gorée) es una isla ubicada en África, con una superficie de 17 hectáreas, se ubica frente a la costa del país a que pertenece, Senegal, se encuentra a tres kilómetros frente a Dakar, la capital. En 1978 fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.
Durante más de tres siglos fue el más importante mercado de esclavos destinado para aprovisionar de ellos a Estados Unidos de América, al Caribe y a Brasil, principalmente. Fue descubierta por portugueses en 1444, bajo cuya bandera en 1536 se construyó la primera Casa de esclavos. Al menos desde entonces y hasta 1848, año en que Francia abolió la esclavitud, en esta isla se estableció la base más activa del comercio de esclavos, siendo la casa que construyó un holandés en 1776, la que aún se conserva, por la Unesco, como museo.
Es imposible precisar actualmente los enormes costos que para las naciones africanas significó este comercio, se calcula que al menos veinte millones de hombres, mujeres y niños fueron secuestrados en sus aldeas, trasladados y vendidos a tratantes que se establecieron abiertamente en la isla de Gorea, aquí eran aprisionados en calabozos, eran encadenados como animales y colocados espalda con espalda, como sardinas enlatadas, para esperar a que fueran vendidos, antes de que decayeran físicamente y fueran sacados de ese lugar.
El diseño de la Casa de esclavos, como la que existe convertida en museo, incluía una sala para hombres, una para recuperar peso, una para mujeres, otra para mujeres jóvenes, una para niños; se tenía especial cuidado en que los llantos de los niños no pudieran ser escuchados por sus madres, para evitar que estas sufrieran y perjudicaran su estado de salud.
Para los efectos del mercado, las mujeres tenían un valor mayor que los hombres, siendo el factor determinante la salud, el busto y la dentadura, los niños eran evaluados por su dentadura y las condiciones en que se encontraban al momento de la transacción; carecían los niños de nombre individual y se les llamaba por las características de la dentición, los hombres deberían pesar cuando menos 60 kilos. Todos los esclavos eran exhibidos en las escalinatas exteriores de la Casa de los Esclavos, donde eran manipulados como animales para analizar y discutir el precio, en lo alto de las escalinatas se encuentra un balcón desde donde los mercaderes y tratantes ajustaban el precio.
Finalmente, eran llevados los esclavos de los calabozos al punto en que serían embarcados, el pasillo que los conducía era conocido como El lugar de donde no se regresa, no era muy ancho para facilitar el manejo de las personas y en la oscuridad del túnel, al final, se apreciaba la luz del sol y el mar, en este lugar era el último en que la familia podía verse, pues en lo sucesivo cada uno sería trasladado a diferentes lugares de América. Eran embarcados en botes para subirlos después a los barcos y los esclavistas frecuentemente utilizaban este momento para hacer limpieza y eliminar a los esclavos que estaban enfermos o no eran fácilmente comercializables, entonces los lanzaban al mar infestado de tiburones.
