The expectation and arrival of a new baby is supposed to be a joyful time in a family’s life, but many parents are left reeling when they receive the heartbreaking news that their baby likely won’t live long. Four families share their experiences of loss in Johns Hopkins Children's Center's NICU, and staff speak about the services available through Johns Hopkins’ Perinatal Palliative Care Program to support parents facing the unimaginable: the death of their baby. As medical technology continues to advance, we are more able to discover serious anomalies prenatally, and to sometimes keep babies alive who are born extremely premature and/or with devastating medical conditions. Parents in these situations often have to make difficult and heartrending decisions about their child’s care. The Johns Hopkins’ Pediatric Palliative Care Team provides support to these families in a variety of ways and works hard to make sure that even the shortest lives are infused with sacredness and dignity. Madyson came to Penfield Children's Center at 8-months-old after suffering a traumatic brain injury. She receives birth-to-three services, occupational, physical and speech therapy, service coordination and significant nursing services in the Special Care Nursery. Since working with her therapists, Madyson has made significant gains in motor, speech and feeding.
Since 1967, Penfield has been a place where children of all abilities find support, comfort, encouragement and strength. More than 1,700 children and their families benefit from Penfield’s holistic approach to early education and development, therapy and family programming.

Mario has Arthrogryposis, a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by multiple joint contractures that prevents him from bending his arms and legs. Though he came to Penfield Children's Center's Special Care Nursery with significant limitations, extensive work with caring occupational, physical and speech therapists has helped him learn that there truly is nothing he can't do.

Child
Biologically, a child (plural: children) is a human between the stages of birth and puberty. The legal definition of child generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority.
Child may also describe a relationship with a parent (such as sons and daughters of any age) or, metaphorically, an authority figure, or signify group membership in a clan, tribe, or religion; it can also signify being strongly affected by a specific time, place, or circumstance, as in "a child of nature" or "a child of the Sixties".
There are many social issues that affect children, such as childhood education, bullying, child poverty, dysfunctional families, child labor, and in developing countries, hunger. Children can be raised by parents, by fosterers, guardians or partially raised in a day care center.
Legal, biological, and social definitions
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defines child as "a human being below the age of 18 years unless under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier". This is ratified by 192 of 194 member countries. In U.S. Immigration Law, a child refers to anyone who is under the age of 21.

Johns Hopkins
Johns Hopkins (May 19, 1795 – December 24, 1873) was an American entrepreneur, abolitionist and philanthropist of 19th-century Baltimore, Maryland.
His bequests founded numerous institutions bearing his name, most notably Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Johns Hopkins University (including its academic divisions such as Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health).
A biography entitled Johns Hopkins: A Silhouette written by his cousin, Helen Hopkins Thom, was published in 1929 by the Johns Hopkins University Press.
Early life
Johns Hopkins was born on May 19, 1795. He was one of eleven children born to Samuel Hopkins (1759–1814) of Crofton, Maryland, and Hannah Janney (1774–1864), of Loudoun County, Virginia. His home was Whitehall, a 500-acre (two km²) tobacco plantation in Anne Arundel County. His first name was inherited from his grandfather Johns Hopkins who received his first name when his mother Margaret Johns married Gerard Hopkins.

The Residential Program for Children with Autism at Edgewood Children's Center is dedicated to the treatment of children and adolescents who struggle with the challenging social and emotional effects of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Treatment at Edgewood is intensive and designed to individually address each child's sensory, psychosocial and educational needs. The program will open in January 2010 and is designed to serve children and adolescents who have diagnoses such as: * Autism spectrum disorder * Asperger syndrome * Communication disorders We also provide services to children who have: * Attention problems * Severe behavior issues * Emotional issues * Sensory processing deficits Services Services are focused and individually customized for children and adolescents, boys and girls ages 5 to 14, who need stabilization and treatment. Services may include: * Sensory rooms and individual sensory diets to meet the needs of each child * Picture Exchange Communication System to foster functional communication skills * Individual, group and family therapy * Special education in an on-campus school * Nursing, psychiatric, medical, psychosocial and educational evaluation consultation * Physical education and recreation therapy * Occupational, speech, language, art and music therapies * Social and life skills training -

Though he came to Penfield Children's Center's Special Care Nursery with significant limitations, extensive work with caring occupational, physical and speech therapists has helped him learn that there truly is nothing he can't do.

Meet four-and-a-half-year-old Manny and his mother, Danielle, to find out how Penfield Children's Center has been a wonderful fit for their daycare needs in Milwaukee.
The Early Education and Child Care program at Penfield Children’s Center provides a nurturing child care environment where teachers and families work together to prepare children for school by promoting positive growth and development. The program uses a child-centered, exploratory approach to early learning, and a curriculum that focuses on social, emotional, cognitive, physical, behavioral, and language development.
Penfield’s program is fully inclusive meaning typically-developing children and children with a developmental delay or disability learn and play together. Licensed and certified teachers use a combination of experience and knowledge to bring out the best in every child in their care. Penfield is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and has been awarded a 5-star rating from YoungStar, Wisconsin’s Childcare Rating Program.
Based on our philosophy of holistic care, Penfield offers a comprehensive program for all families seeking high quality early education and child care. Children may receive speech, physical and occupational therapy and an on-site nursing staff monitors the health of all children in the center. Other program highlights include:
► Week day programs from 7:00am to 5:30pm, for children ages 5 weeks to 6 years old

The expectation and arrival of a new baby is supposed to be a joyful time in a family’s life, but many parents are left reeling when they receive the heartbreaking news that their baby likely won’t live long. Four families share their experiences of loss in Johns Hopkins Children's Center's NICU, and staff speak about the services available through Johns Hopkins’ Perinatal Palliative Care Program to support parents facing the unimaginable: the death of their baby. As medical technology continues to advance, we are more able to discover serious anomalies prenatally, and to sometimes keep babies alive who are born extremely premature and/or with devastating medical conditions.
