Amsterdam-based Bart de Baets is a fierce formalist, an unrelenting experimenter who has developed a unique typographic attitude that has influenced designers around the world. His work spans the entire cultural sector for clients in the fields of art, music, performance, and film. A few of his clients include the Amsterdam club Paradiso, cultural centers such as W139, De Appel, AFK, and the New Institute, and film programs such as the Weight of Colour and A New Divide?
De Baets is also known for his self-initiated projects, including Dark and Stormy, an ambiguous fanzine he publishes with Rustan Söderling featuring contributions from an international array of artists, and Success and Uncertainty, a poster series and publication made with Sandra Kassenaar during an artist residency in Cairo amid the chaos of 2011’s Arab Spring. Confronted with the reality of state-imposed curfews, the resignation of President Mubarak, and the politically charged environment, de Baets and Kassenaar were forced to explore their status as outsiders, questioning the relevance of their intentions—and in the process, creating beautiful and vital work.
De Baets teaches graphic design at both the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam) and the Royal Academy of Arts (the Hague) and conducts workshops throughout Europe.

We discovered many private gardens that lie behind some of the nicest canal houses in the city center. Many are also part of museums and hotels which can be visited year-round. But some are only open to the public during Open Garden Days which takes place in June. This year's theme is "Art in the Garden", so many beautiful and unique pieces are also on display. Floating house on a barge in the center of Amsterdam
Channel barge, built in 1908, transformed into a comfortable houseboat with two bedrooms in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The barge Charlotte Johanna for the first time into the water in 1908, for the carriage of goods by inland waterways in Western Europe. A little more than a hundred years later it was turned into a houseboat and now it stands at the pier on the Prinsengracht canal in central Amsterdam. The ramp leads to the main entrance of the ship's control room, which is used as a hall.
From there, a steep staircase down into what was once a cargo compartment, and is now a comfortable living space. Down the hatch in the cargo bay was replaced by skylights, making space below deck surprisingly sunny and helping to neutralize the low ceiling.
Moving from the wheelhouse forward, you will pass by the bathroom ...
... And the kitchen with its dining peninsula.
Then you pass through the living room ...
... And you find yourself in the master bedroom on the bow of the ship.
The compact second bedroom is located in the former captain's cabin on the ship's stern. Access to it is carried out directly from the wheelhouse.
In front of the wheelhouse has been added a new deck provides a great place to relax. Its surface is made of a metal grating, so that bright sunlight is open access to light hatches.
What is the cost of living on board a barge in Amsterdam? Amsterdam (English /ˈæmstərdæm/ or /ˌæmstərˈdæm/;Dutch: [ɑmstərˈdɑm]) is the capital city and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the Dutch capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands though it is not the seat of the Dutch government, which is The Hague. Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin as a dam of the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. FIFA 15
FIFA 15 is an association football simulation video game developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on 23 September 2014 in North America, 25 September in Europe and 26 September in the United Kingdom and Ireland for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, iOS, Android and Windows Phone. On PC, FIFA 15 runs on EA’s Ignite engine with the same features as the PS4 and Xbox One editions.
The game features Lionel Messi on its cover, alongside a different player in different parts of the world, and is the first game in the FIFA series to be fully licensed by the Premier League. FIFA 15 received positive reviews across all platforms, although the PC version in particular was criticised for the amount of bugs that were featured at release.
Ultimate Team
FIFA 15's Ultimate Team introduced a new feature, in which users can sign loan players for a limited duration of matches. Another new feature is The Concept Squad, where players are given access to the game's database and can create a "dream squad". The concept player's card is grey colored. A number of new legends are also introduced to the game, including Franz Beckenbauer, Roberto Carlos, Peter Schmeichel and Hristo Stoichkov which are only available on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Big data
Big data is a broad term for data sets so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate. Challenges include analysis, capture, data curation, search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, querying and information privacy. The term often refers simply to the use of predictive analytics or certain other advanced methods to extract value from data, and seldom to a particular size of data set. Accuracy in big data may lead to more confident decision making, and better decisions can result in greater operational efficiency, cost reduction and reduced risk.
Analysis of data sets can find new correlations to "spot business trends, prevent diseases, combat crime and so on." Scientists, business executives, practitioners of medicine, advertising and governments alike regularly meet difficulties with large data sets in areas including Internet search, finance and business informatics. Scientists encounter limitations in e-Science work, including meteorology, genomics,connectomics, complex physics simulations, biology and environmental research.

Amsterdam-based Bart de Baets is a fierce formalist, an unrelenting experimenter who has developed a unique typographic attitude that has influenced designers around the world. His work spans the entire cultural sector for clients in the fields of art, music, performance, and film. Floating house on a barge in the center of Amsterdam Channel barge, built in 1908, transformed into a comfortable houseboat with two bedrooms in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The barge Charlotte Johanna for the first time into the water in 1908, for the carriage of goods by inland waterways in Western Europe. A little more than a hundred years later it was turned into a houseboat and now it stands at the pier on the Prinsengracht canal in central Amsterdam. The ramp leads to the main entrance of the ship's control room, which is used as a hall. From there, a steep staircase down into what was once a cargo compartment, and is now a comfortable living space. De Baets teaches graphic design at both the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam) and the Royal Academy of Arts (the Hague) and conducts workshops throughout Europe.

We discovered many private gardens that lie behind some of the nicest canal houses in the city center. Many are also part of museums and hotels which can be visited year-round. But some are only open to the public during Open Garden Days which takes place in June. This year's theme is "Art in the Garden", so many beautiful and unique pieces are also on display. Channel barge, built in 1908, transformed into a comfortable houseboat with two bedrooms in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The barge Charlotte Johanna for the first time into the water in 1908, for the carriage of goods by inland waterways in Western Europe. A little more than a hundred years later it was turned into a houseboat and now it stands at the pier on the Prinsengracht canal in central Amsterdam. The ramp leads to the main entrance of the ship's control room, which is used as a hall.
From there, a steep staircase down into what was once a cargo compartment, and is now a comfortable living space. Down the hatch in the cargo bay was replaced by skylights, making space below deck surprisingly sunny and helping to neutralize the low ceiling.
Moving from the wheelhouse forward, you will pass by the bathroom ...
... And the kitchen with its dining peninsula.
Then you pass through the living room ...
... And you find yourself in the master bedroom on the bow of the ship.
The compact second bedroom is located in the former captain's cabin on the ship's stern. Access to it is carried out directly from the wheelhouse.
In front of the wheelhouse has been added a new deck provides a great place to relax. Its surface is made of a metal grating, so that bright sunlight is open access to light hatches.
What is the cost of living on board a barge in Amsterdam? The cost of a place at the pier is about 200 euros per month, and annual maintenance of the ship -. 1000-3000 euros This service does not include towing to dry dock every few years, where the body will be cleared of rust and repainted for the 2000-3000 euro. While in dry dock specialist can examine the hull, providing peace of mind to the owner at a price of 700 euros. Thus, not including the electricity bill, the monthly cost will be around 350-550 euros.

In 1567, the much-traveled Italian, Lodovico Guicciardini, referred to Amsterdam as 'The Venice of the North'. Today, the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and that Amsterdam is the largest lakeland village in the world.
The bicycle is one of the city's main features. Parking spaces have been designed specially for this mode of transport and it shows that even in a large city, there is an alternative way of getting about.
In the city centre, there are nearly 7,000 protected houses and warehouses, most of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The 300 year old Magere Brug is of wood construction and is one of the most beautiful drawbridges in the world.
The Bloemenmarkt has been in existence since the 17th century and in bygone days, fresh flowers were delivered by boat and sold on board. Here a great variety of colorful tulips and bulbs is offered for sale, as well as many exotic plants and seeds.
New Church is almost 600 years old but due to it's lack of worshippers, it is now used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts which fund its continued maintenance. Built around 1300 A.D., Old Church is the oldest religious building in the city. During the Middle Ages, it served as a refuge for vagrants but today it is surrounded by a sex and entertainment district.
In 1682, the city fathers decided to create a leisure area east of the city, in the centre of which the Artis Zoo was subsequently established, the oldest zoo on the European continent.
Amsterdam possesses an inescapable charm that is adored by both aged hippies and trendy teenagers alike. It is Europe's irresistible 'Capital of Cool'!

This Amsterdam travel guide video was created especially for foodies. I’ll take you on a self-guided Amsterdam food tour in the Jordaan neighborhood. We'll explore many classic Dutch dishes at some of the most notable and famous cafes in the city.
Amsterdam Travel guide itinerary:
Alright, are you ready to go on a self-guided Amsterdam food tour? Let's go! We'll begin with Cafe d'Oude West. This traditional Dutch cafe is located on the corner of Rozengracht overlooking the canals. The terrace is a great place to have a spend the morning and enjoy a koffie verkeerd (Dutch latte which translates into “wrong coffee” as it is filled with more milk than coffee) as well as some poffertjes.
Poffertjes are mini Dutch pancakes that are made from buckwheat flour and cooked in a cast iron skillet. They are fluffy, spongy, sweet, and typically covered in powdered sugar and butter. It is best to eat your poffertjes with stroop which is a Dutch pancake syrup made from brown sugar that is very thick and tastes like molasses. Also, I should note that when you order a coffee (koffie) or tea (thee) in Amsterdam, this will typically be accompanied by a speculoos cookie. Speculoos tastes similar to American gingerbread as it is filled with holiday spices such as ginger, white pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Next we take a trip to a Dutch restaurant called Tijger & de Vis where they specialize in all things fish! Here, you can order a plate of battered & deep fried cod (called kibbling) as well as some fried mackerel (called Mackerel). These dishes were both extraordinarily amazing! This seafood shop only carries the freshest fish and everything is cooked to order. They also have an array of prepared dishes that you can take on-the-go. Don't miss eating at this place if you're ever in Amsterdam, it's top notch!
After this seafood feast, we stroll on over to Café Papeneiland. This historic brown bar was once used as an underground tunnel system for persecuted Catholics and it was also visited by former President Clinton. The story goes that President Clinton stopped by for a slice of appeltaart and liked it so much that he took an entire apple pie with him! Words elude me when it comes to describing how magnificent and perfect this Dutch apple pie really is.
From the flakey yet thick buttery crust, to the scrumptious thinly sliced apple pieces, to the mountain of whipped cream...this dessert is just heavenly! Make sure to try some of the local Dutch beers on tap which pairs nicely with your sweet treat.

Welcome to Amsterdam. Ten top things to do in Amsterdam.
First up is the Rijksmuseum. There’s a vast array of exhibitions here but the museum is most famous for its collection of Rembrandt paintings. And it’s here that you can see his masterpiece, The Night Watch.
The Rijksmuseum is really popular and the queues can get really long. Book an e-ticket before you arrive to avoid queuing at the ticket desk.
A great thing to do when you first arrive is to take a canal tour. We booked with Gray Line, which you can find on Damrak, near Amsterdam Centraal. The tour lasts for an hour and takes you all around the city.
Live like a local and hire a bike for the day. We recommend Star Bikes; they provided us with a friendly service and the bikes cost just €9 for 24 hours.
Anne Frank’s House is on Prisengracht, in central Amsterdam.No cameras are allowed to be used inside as the museum believes that photography disturbs the emotional experience of the visit. And, as for tickets, from 9:30am - 3:30pm, entry is only available to those who have booked an online time slot. You can buy tickets on the gate, between 3:30pm and closing, but by then the queue will have gotten really big, so we recommend booking it online first.
The tulip fields at Keukenhof are only open for eight weeks a year, so if you’re in Amsterdam between late March and mid-May, they’re an absolute must-visit. It’s worth it just for the photos. Keukenhof has really gone out of its way to make it perfect for younger kids too. There’s loads for the whole family to do here. From parks and playgrounds to a petting zoo, Keukenhof caters for everyone.
Another idea for a day trip is to head to the Zaanse Schans windmills, there’s loads to do here. Take a walk or a bike ride along the canals. Have a look around the small cheese farm, see traditional clog-making or head inside the windmills themselves. We’re inside the Schans Molen, it’s the last remaining paint windmill in the world. To get in, it costs €4 for an adult and €2 for a child.
Next we’re heading back into the city centre, to the Vincent Van Gogh museum. Born in 1853, Van Gogh was one of the leaders in the post-impressionist movement. And it’s here in this museum that you’ll find the largest collection of his artworks, including the famous Sunflowers. The museum is open every day from 9am and closing times vary by season. The busiest times are in the middle of the day, between 11am and 3pm, so visit outside of these areas for the best experience. Just like other museums in Amsterdam, we recommend booking your tickets online ahead of your visit.
Tucked away down Pijlsteeg, just off Dam Square, is Wynand Fockink, a traditional jenever tasting tavern. You can try from over seventy different varieties and you’re encouraged to try the traditional way, hands-free, from a tulip-shaped glass.
Stroopwafels are Dutch waffles made from two layers of baked dough, with a layer of syrup in the middle. And the best place to try them is at the Albert Cuypmarkt. The market is mainly for locals but it’s a fascinating place to visit and its surrounding area of De Pijp is the best place in the city to go out for food.
And, finally, what visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to the Red Light District? Known locally as De Wallen, it’s home to coffee shops, legalised prostitution, peep shows, sex shops and just about anything in between. Millions of tourists flock here every year and, even if you’re not into what the Red Light District has to offer, we still recommend doing what we did and booking yourself onto a walking tour. We booked with AmsterdamRedLightDistrictTour.com. They were friendly and informative, talking us through some crazy places, many of which we weren’t even allowed to film.

Also see the updated project from 2014: https://vimeo.com/102945668 The guys from Panasonic asked me to crete a nice eyecatcher installation to show the benefits of the stacking of two beamers with each 13.000 Lumen. So we had around 25.000 Lumen and that was enough to compete with all the regular light situation at the trade fair. The animations honor the 3 corner pyramid and its geometrical simplicism. One Minute Wonder 47 - Satyendra Pakhalé
Satyendra Pakhalé is a designer from India. He obtained a master’s degree in Design from the Industrial Design Centre in Bombay and studied Advanced Product Design from the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland. Before setting up his own design practice in 1998 in Amsterdam, Pakhalé worked at Philips Design. Since then he has gone to work with clients such as Alessi, Alcantra, Moroso and Cappellini. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is part of an impressive array of permanent collections, including the V&A; Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Polycentric urban development is a concept that is sometimes difficult to explain to the general urban user. The reason is linked to the fact that everybody can define a center by referring to personal experiences, knowledge and background. Moreover, location and situation in which you ask "What is a center?" affect its definition. In addition, the answer would definitively depend on which type of person would ask this basic question. Amsterdam-based Bart de Baets is a fierce formalist, an unrelenting experimenter who has developed a unique typographic attitude that has influenced designers around the world. His work spans the entire cultural sector for clients in the fields of art, music, performance, and film. A few of his clients include the Amsterdam club Paradiso, cultural centers such as W139, De Appel, AFK, and the New Institute, and film programs such as the Weight of Colour and A New Divide?
De Baets is also known for his self-initiated projects, including Dark and Stormy, an ambiguous fanzine he publishes with Rustan Söderling featuring contributions from an international array of artists, and Success and Uncertainty, a poster series and publication made with Sandra Kassenaar during an artist residency in Cairo amid the chaos of 2011’s Arab Spring. Confronted with the reality of state-imposed curfews, the resignation of President Mubarak, and the politically charged environment, de Baets and Kassenaar were forced to explore their status as outsiders, questioning the relevance of their intentions—and in the process, creating beautiful and vital work.
De Baets teaches graphic design at both the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam) and the Royal Academy of Arts (the Hague) and conducts workshops throughout Europe.

The guys from Panasonic asked me to crete a nice eyecatcher installation to show the benefits of the stacking of two beamers with each 13.000 Lumen. So we had around 25.000 Lumen and that was enough to compete with all the regular light situation at the trade fair. The animations honor the 3 corner pyramid and its geometrical simplicism. But no object is alone in universe, so we have three of them, connected in a center, where the pulse is always starting.

Polycentric urban development is a concept that is sometimes difficult to explain to the general urban user. The reason is linked to the fact that everybody can define a center by referring to personal experiences, knowledge and background. Moreover, location and situation in which you ask "What is a center?" affect its definition. In addition, the answer would definitively depend on which type of person would ask this basic question. To show that these postulations are true, we made an experiment during Queensday, which is the most important public holiday of Holland. Queensday takes place at the end of a long and rainy winter. The city transforms into an improvised flee market, the streets are punted with orange colors, and people faces are red, because of the sun, and sometimes, the beer... An amazing friend of ours, Addison helped to ask people "What is a center?" The answers are contrasting, unusual or just honestly related to the context. Check the video to understand.

Jean-Baptiste Labrune is research affiliate at the MIT Medialab. His research aims at developing Creativity Research Tools (CRT) that allow artists and scientists to document and explore their own creative processes. He is particularly interested in Exaptive Innovation, Art & Science collaborations and the future of Playful cultures. Before joining MIT, Jb earned a MS in computer science in Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (2004), and Phd degree in computer science (HCI) at Université Paris-Sud and INRIA Futurs (2007). He taught in art and design schools in Europe such as the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Mediamatic in Amsterdam and Les Beaux-Arts in Paris. Bruce Sterling -- author, journalist, editor, and critic. Best known for his ten science fiction novels, he also writes short stories, book reviews, design criticism, opinion columns, and introductions for books ranging from Ernst Juenger to Jules Verne. He is a contributing editor of WIRED magazine and writes a weblog. 2005 & 2011 he was "Visionary in Residence" Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. 2008 at the Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam. And Guest Curator for the Share Festival of Digital Art & Culture, Torino, Italy.
Dr. Markus Schmidt -- founder of Biofaction has a background in electronic engineering, biology and environmental risk assessment. For 10 years he has carried out environmental risk assessment, safety and public perception studies in a number of science and technology fields (GM-crops, gene therapy, nanotechnology, converging technologies, synthetic biology). He also works at the art-science interaction, e.g. producing the Science Film Festival "Bio:Fiction" and the art exhibition "synth-ethic".

In this lecture, Lev Manovich, discusses the field of cultural analytics, which takes cultural data sets, and through a given method of visualization and automatic image analysis, provides a new type of interface for media exploration. Manovich argues that, these new, digital modes of cultural analytics allow us to deal with the exponential growth of culture and its products. Moreover, it allows us both to re-categorize and mine phenomena of all kinds, and to give sets of data visual representations which reveal large-scale patterns for massive amounts of data, both today and in the past. In this lecture Manovich discusses Mark Rothco, Piet Modriane, Bruno Latour, Time Magazine covers, Dziga Vertov's The Eleventh Year (1928), video games, the difference between statistical society and data mining, the question of reduction, pattern recognition, and the shift from objects to patterns in cultural studies. At the end of the lecture, Manovich answers students' questions. Public lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe 2010 Lev Manovich.

Lev Manovich (b. 1960) is a Russian-American artist and theorist. He studied computer science and architecture in Moscow, after which he earned an M.A. in experimental psychology, from the University of New York in 1988. Following this, Lev earned a PhD in visual and cultural studied, from the University of Rochester, in 1993. His PhD work traced the relation between computers and the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. Currently, Lev Manovich is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego.
His art has been displayed in countless major international exhibitions, including a retrospective by the ICA, London entitled: Lev Manovich: Adventures of digital cinema (2002). Manovich is also the director of Software Studies Initiative, a research lab at the University of California, San Diego. Besides his tenure at UCSD, he is a visiting professor at Goldsmiths College, London, De Monfort University, Leicester, University of South Wales, Sydney, and the Donau-Universität Krems, Austria. He has been a visiting professor at numerous international institutes, including: UCLA, the University of Amsterdam, Stockholm University, Cologne University, and the Hong Kong Arts Center. Manovich has also worked as a designer, programmer and computer animator, and created the first digital film project designed for the web, Freud Lissitzky Navigator, in 1994.
Lev Manovich has published over 90 influential articles on media aesthetics, and a series of fundamental books in the area, including: Tekstura: Russian Essays on Visual Culture (1993), Metamediji (2001), Black Box -- White Cube (2005), Soft Cinema DVD (2005), and Software Takes Command (2008). His most influential work, however, is undoubtedly The Language of New Media (2001). In this work, Manovich develops his first systematic theory of 'new media', and places it in the context and historical development of other areas of culture, including: painting, cinema, television, photography and etc. The aim of the book was to explain the origins or genealogy of 'new media' by finding its origins in other areas of culture, and types of media. The book's other primary focus is to investigate the effects and consequences of the digital revolution on visual culture at large; to this end, Manovich at times relies on the theory and history of cinema as his conceptual lens. The Language of New Media, has been recognized by many as the work which placed 'new media' "within the most suggestive and broad ranging media history since Marshall McLuhan" (Telepolis).
