Langley Research Center (LaRC) is the oldest of NASA's field centers, located in Hampton, Virginia, United States. It directly borders Poquoson, Virginia and Langley Field. LaRC focuses primarily on aeronautical research, though the Apollo lunar lander was flight-tested at the facility and a number of high-profile space missions have been planned and designed on-site.
Established in 1917 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Center currently devotes two-thirds of its programs to aeronautics, and the rest to space. LaRC researchers use more than 40 wind tunnels to study improved aircraft and spacecraft safety, performance, and efficiency. Between 1958 and 1963, when NASA started Project Mercury, LaRC served as the main office of the Space Task Group, with the office being transferred to the Manned Spacecraft Center (now the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center) in Houston in 1962–63.
The current director is David E. Bowles.
In 1917, less than three years after it was created, the NACA established Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory on Langley Field. Both Langley Field and the Langley Laboratory are named for aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. The Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps had established a base there earlier that same year. The first research facilities were in place and aeronautical research was started by 1920. Initially the laboratory included four researchers and 11 technicians.

NASA celebrates the lives and careers of the Langley West Computing Unit who helped America win the space race of the 1950s and 60s. The lives of these unsung heroines is captured in the book and film "Hidden Figures". https://www.nasa.gov/modernfigures
A test version of the Orion spacecraft is pulled back like a pendulum and released, taking a dive into the 20-foot-deep Hydro Impact Basin at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Crash-test dummies wearing modified Advanced Crew Escape Suits are securely seated inside the capsule to help engineers understand how splashdown in the ocean during return from a deep-space mission could impact the crew and seats. Each test in the water-impact series simulates different scenarios for Orion’s parachute-assisted landings, wind conditions, velocities and wave heights the spacecraft and crew may experience when landing in the ocean upon return missions in support of the journey to Mars. A mock-up of NASA's Orion spacecraft recently took an east coast journey from the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., in preparation for future testing at Langley's Landing and Impact Research Facility. Testing will give engineers insight into how the capsule performs under a variety of ocean and landing conditions. This fall, the Orion spacecraft will fly on its first uncrewed mission, known as Exploration Flight Test-1, where it will travel 3,600 miles above Earth before reentering the atmosphere at a speed of approximately 20,000 mph (32,187 kph) and temperatures of close to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius) for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. http://www.nasa.gov/orion http://www.nasa.gov/langley
What is now the Landing Impact and Research Facility at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., was built in 1965 to test the lunar landing module, which simulated touchdown procedures for the Apollo moon missions. At 240 feet high and 400 feet long, it looks like a giant steel erector set. It is now used to conduct crash testing of full scale aircraft under controlled conditions and splash testing of space capsule mock ups.

When the gust research activity was terminated in the mid-1950s, the building occupancy was divided between research office space (designated Building 1218) and an anechoic test facility (designated Building 1218-A). The anechoic test capability was retained through 2009, while the office areas were subsequ...

It is a form of forced convection in that the flow field is created by forces beyond those associated with the thermal processes. The heat transfer essentially occurs at t...
NASA Langley researchers want to get a better idea about conditions on our nearest planetary neighbor, Venus, so they have come up with HAVOC or a High Altitude Venus Operational Concept – a lighter-than-air rocket ship that would help send two astronauts on a 30-day mission to explore the planet’s atmosphere. Exploration of Venus is a challenge not only because its smog-like sulfuric acid-laced atmosphere, but also its extremely hot surface temperature and extremely high air pressure on the surface.

Pumice rafts are expansive masses of pumice clasts floating on the oceansurface produced by silicic shallow submarine and subaerial explosive volcanic eruptions. The goal of this project was to enhance knowledge of pumice rafts and develop accessible and practical methodologies for predicting the movement of pumice rafts in the South Pacific region. Two volcanoes in this region have recently erupted and formed pumice rafts: Home Reef volcano (Tonga) in 2006 and Havre Seamount (Kermadec Islands, New Zealand) in 2012. These raft events were used as examples to test the trajectory prediction model since they occurred during times at which high spatial and temporal resolution true color imagery were being collected and they have been frequently described in peer reviewed literature, both of wh...
This project attempted to enhance the effectiveness of water allocation planning by providing tools to forecast water availability in the Copiapó and Huasco provinces in Atacama, Chile. NASA Earth observation data were combined with in-situ measurements in the Snowmelt Runoff Model to forecast potential water availability from Andean snowmelt. The biggest stars burn the fastest and brightest, and when they die, they do so spectacularly, exploding as supernovae and leaving behind some of the most fantastic objects in the universe: neutron stars and black holes. In this public science talk recorded at James Madison University on April 17, 2014, Dr. Scott Ransom (NRAO/UVa) discussed how these crazy objects are created, some of their amazing properties and why we (probably!) don't need to worry about them too much here in our cozy homes on Earth.
