Zimbabwe (/zɪmˈbɑːbweɪ/), officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked sovereign state located in southern Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers. It borders South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east and northeast. The capital and largest city is Harare.
Since the 11th century, present-day Zimbabwe has been the site of several organised states and kingdoms as well as a major route for migration and trade. The British South Africa Company of Cecil Rhodes first demarcated the present territory during the 1890s; it became the self-governing British colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1923. In 1965, the conservative white minority government unilaterally declared independence as Rhodesia. The state endured international isolation and a 15-year guerrilla war with black nationalist forces; this culminated in a peace agreement that established universal enfranchisement and de jure sovereignty in April 1980. The country then rejoined the Commonwealth of Nations (later suspended in 2003), and became a member of the United Nations and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Zimbabwe - Harare - Latest Report On The Protests By Irwin Chifera. Public protests rocked Harare after commuter omnibus drivers and touts went on the rampage claiming that they are losing a lot of money at police roadblocks, which have also become money spinners for some police allegedly demanding bribes. Police in Zimbabwe's capital fired teargas and water cannons in an attempt to quell rioting by taxi and mini bus drivers protesting what they describe as police harassment. The riots in Epworth, Ruwa, Zimre Park and Damafalls quickly spread to other parts of the city, resulting in running battles between the police and members of the public. Recent riots at the South African/Zimbabwe border post Beitbridge, have triggered more frustration amongst the Zimbabwean people. Commuter om...

White farmers, who owned large farms, had their land expropriated and redistributed. This move had been promised by President Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980. But the new owners lacked experience on how to run the farms, leading to a massive drop in production. In 2009, inflation reached astronomical levels. Today, although the situation has stabilised, Zimbabweans still live in fear of a return to hyperinflation. Introduced by Robert Mugabe’s government on Monday as part of a desperate bid to stave off a cash flow crisis, the green notes are supposed to be traded 1 - 1 with the US dollar. Has Robert Mugabe found a magic formula to mend his country’s shattered economy? Or are bond notes his final, possibly fatal, folly? It is certainly a desperate act. Zimbabwe is printing its own money for the first time in almost a decade, when ruinous hyper-inflation forced them to adopt the US d...

His pieces sell for between 30 and 500 USD and Samuel makes a profit of about 200 dollars every month. Though people thought that things would change soon after the unity government came to power this year, many still can't afford basics like sugar, cooking oil and fuel. With an average of one hundred children under 5 dying each day, it may be hard to believe that Zimbabawe was once the country of choice for medical treatment in Africa. Haru Mutasa in Harare explains why the healthcare system there has not been able to regain its title.
Doctors say mental health problems are a hidden crisis in much of Africa, but lay health workers in Zimbabwe have been offering private therapy sessions on the grounds of clinics across Harare. A trial conducted by the University of Zimbabwe, along with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and King’s College London, shows the therapy has led to a big improvement in mental health. As Henry Ridgwell reports, the treatment could be a blueprint for tackling mental health in Africa. Originally published at - http://www.voanews.com/a/3662387.html

The videotape’s title employs the idea of “reading” the surface of water—akin to unpacking the meaning of a photograph—as a means to navigate what is below; it “reads” the water both in content and form and utilizes playfully refl...

Diamond industry executives and human rights groups are to meet in St. Petersburg, Russia, this week to try and agree on whether Zimbabwe should be allowed to resume selling diamonds from its Marange fields. Zimbabwe's Government hopes the lifting of a 4 year ban on raw chrome exports will bolster the nation's ailing mining sector. At the age of eight, filmmaker Robyn Paterson greeted Comrade Robert Mugabe with flowers as he stepped from a plane at a Zimbabwe air-force base. She and her best friend, Mercy, were poster children for the new Zimbabwe. Robyn as pale skinned as Mercy was dark, the girls were a symbol that all was well in the independent nation. But it was not. Only a few miles away, Mercy’s Matabele tribespeople were being massacred by Mugabe’s special forces. A generation later, Robyn begins a high-risk ground search across Zimbabwe - desperate to know what has happened to her friend. Along the way she faces the dangers of filming in a country hostile to media, the shock of what is still going on behind closed doors, and the stark differences that she and Mercy have come to symbolize. A gripping, heart-...

It's struggling to pay public sector workers. The worsening economy has led to political tensions and anti-government protests. Demonstrators accuse the government of mismanagement and corruption. Some are calling for president Robert Mugabe to step down. But the 92-year-old, who has led the country since its independence from Britain in 1980, remains defiant. He says the protests are distracting the government from improving the ...

White farmers are under persecution in Zimbabwe. In June 2009 there were only 100 of them left. Is it all about land redistribution, in order for the injustices of the colonization era to be rectified, when white farmers owned the best pieces of land, as president Mugabe claims? Or is it about the wiping out of the white population, a reverse racism, a political game so that he can remain in power? This is a documentary where there are ‘no good guys’ apart from the tortured people of Zimbabwe. It’s the image of Africa’s ex-granary that became synonymous with poverty, inflation, corruption, electoral fraud, violence and oppression.

Zimbabwe is a beautiful country, but the police officers are the most corrupt we met in the whole south of africa. After the first bad experiences with police stops in Zimbabwe we startet recording this videos. The worst experience was police officer Mr Kamela on a police stop 10 km from Mutare, the border town to Mozambique, who lost control and hit my arm and violently forced me to leave the car (his deputy was even stealing my car key, all recorded on the video). By the way, our stories about Sgt Maj Ncube and the story about beeing district officer in Switzerland were not true, but the best way to handle this corrupt officers. In the end of the video you even hear the voice of police officer Kamela asking, "if he should hit me". This unbelievable police stop, 10 km before Mutare, happe...

Every man gotta right
To decide his own destiny
And in this judgment
There is no partiality
So arm in arms, with arms
We will fight this little struggle
'Cause that's the only way
We can overcome our little trouble
Brother you're right, you're right
You're right, you're right, you're so right
We gonna fight, we'll have to fight
We gonna fight, fight for our rights
Natty dread it ina Zimbabwe
Set it up ina Zimbabwe
Mash it up ina Zimbabwe
Africans a liberate Zimbabwe
No more internal power struggle
We come together, to overcome
The little trouble
Soon we will find out
Who is the real revolutionary
'Cause I don't want my people
To be contrary
Brothers you're right, you're right
You're right, you're right, you're so right
We'll have to fight, we gonna fight
We'll have to fight, fighting for our rights
Mash it up ina Zimbabwe
Natty trash it ina Zimbabwe
I and I a liberate Zimbabwe
Brother you're right, you're right
You're right, you're right, you're so right
We gonna fight, we'll have to fight
We gonna fight, fighting for our rights
To divide and rule
Could only tear us apart
In everyman chest
There beats a heart
So soon we'll find out
Who is the real revolutionaries
And I don't want my people
To be tricked by mercenaries
Brother you're right, you're right
You're right, you're right, you're so right
We gonna fight, we'll have to fight
We gonna fight, fighting for our rights
Natty trash it ina Zimbabwe
Mash it up ina Zimbabwe
Set it up ina Zimbabwe
Africans a liberate Zimbabwe
Africans a liberate Zimbabwe
Natty dub it ina Zimbabwe
Set it up ina Zimbabwe
Africans a liberate Zimbabwe
Every man got a right
