Nia Maria Glassie
Nia came into this world on April 25 2004 to her mother Lisa Kuka the youngest of six in New Zealand.
Lisa began dating Wiremu Curtis. Family members disapproved of the relationship. Lisa was 18 years older the Wiremu.
Nia lived in a small house with her mother, Wiremu, his brother Michael, Michael Pearson (Nia's cousin) & girlfriend Oriwa Kemp.
Wiremu, Michael & Michael would play "games" with Nia, causing her multiple injuries.
Not only did Nia suffer being slapped, hit, kicked & being called "ugly"
In the winter Nia was forced into a bathtub of ice cold water & put in the drier.
"They turned the switch, the one with lots of numbers on it, up too high and Nia kicked the door open but they just put her legs back in."
They would watch & laugh as Nia spun around in the drier for up to 30 minutes bleeding from her head.
On a separate day Nia was pinned to a clothesline & spun around as fast a possible until she fell off.
When Nia fell off she would land on her head.
Nia's jeans and underwear were once removed and she was pushed into a sandpit.
Crying, Nia then had blocks of wood thrown at her.
The radio was turned up to avoid neighbours hearing her cries. She was dragged through the sandpit later causing friction burns.
Nia also endured being lifted up until her head touched the ceiling & was then dropped.
Her head and feet took turns being hung over a fire burning in the fireplace.
The men would practise wrestling moves on Nia they had learned from a PS2 game & fold Nia up into a sofa bed and sit on her.
Nia was put up on the roof of her house and left up there for hours terrified.
"...both family members and neighbors, were aware of the neglect and abuse Nia was subject to...but did nothing to stop it."
The men were constantly thinking up new "games" to play with Nia. They enjoyed hurting little Nia.
In August 2007 Wiremu and Michael kicked Nia in the head three times. she fell unconscious & was put to bed.
36 hours later Nia was brought to the hospital. Doctors were told she had fallen off of Wiremu's shoulders.
Nia's brain injury was so severe parts of her tissue in her brain had already died.
While her daughter lay in a coma, Lisa went out clubbing with her friends.
On August 3rd Nia flew away to a safer, happier place.
Michael and Wiremus Curtis were sentenced to 17 years in prison, Michael Pearson and Oriwa Kemp to 3 years.
Lisa was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
"Think about that for a second. These less than humans didn't get pleasure from causing pain, like a sadist would, they got a good laugh."

A Maori community leader and child advocate wants New Zealanders to stop turning a blind eye to child abuse and dob in their neighbours.
His call comes after yesterday's guilty verdicts in the trial of those accused of killing Rotorua three-year-old Nia Glassie.
Hone Kaa, head of the child advocacy group Te Kahui Mana Ririki, said New Zealand's child abuse rate was unacceptably high, and more children like Nia would die if people continued to turn a blind eye.
"We can be sure she isn't going to be the last. We might pray that she is, but in the end it's the behaviour of adults that secures the safety of children."
Dr Kaa said New Zealanders ought to be "busybodies" and report abuse.
"We've got to learn to nark. I've said this before and I'm not afraid of saying it time and time again. Drop them in it."
Nia's mother, Lisa Kuka, was found guilty of two counts of manslaughter - one for failing to obtain medical treatment for the toddler before her death in August last year, and one for failing to protect her.

Nia Glassie abuse case
The Nia Glassie abuse case was a high-profile criminal investigation and subsequent murder trial concerning the abuse and death of a 3-year-old girl in Rotorua, New Zealand.
Nia Marie Glassie was a 3-year-old Māori girl abused and eventually killed by her family. Her death caused major outrage in New Zealand resulting in numerous media reports and causing the Prime Minister Helen Clark to speak out about the case.
Abuse
Nia was subject to extensive physical abuse for weeks, possibly even months, before being admitted to hospital and dying of brain injuries on 3 August 2007. The court concluded she had been kicked, beaten, slapped, jumped on, held over a burning fire, had wrestling moves copied from a computer game practiced on her, spit on, placed into a clothes dryer spinning at top heat for up to 30 minutes, folded into a sofa and sat on, shoved into piles of rubbish, dragged through a sandpit half-naked, flung against a wall, dropped from a height onto the floor, and whirled rapidly on an outdoor rotary clothes line until thrown off.

Her head and feet took turns being hung over a fire burning in the fireplace. Nia was put up on the roof of her house and left up there for hours terrified. These less than humans didn't get pleasure from causing pain, like a sadist would, they got a good laugh." Family members disapproved of the relationship. Lisa was 18 years older the Wiremu. Nia came into this world on April 25 2004 to her mother Lisa Kuka the youngest of six in New Zealand.
Lisa began dating Wiremu Curtis. Family members disapproved of the relationship. Lisa was 18 years older the Wiremu.
Nia lived in a small house with her mother, Wiremu, his brother Michael, Michael Pearson (Nia's cousin) & girlfriend Oriwa Kemp.
Wiremu, Michael & Michael would play "games" with Nia, causing her multiple injuries.
Not only did Nia suffer being slapped, hit, kicked & being called "ugly"
In the winter Nia was forced into a bathtub of ice cold water & put in the drier.
"They turned the switch, the one with lots of numbers on it, up too high and Nia kicked the door open but they just put her legs back in."
They would watch & laugh as Nia spun around in the drier for up to 30 minutes bleeding from her head.
On a separate day Nia was pinned to a clothesline & spun around as fast a possible until she fell off.
When Nia fell off she would land on her head.
Nia's jeans and underwear were once removed and she was pushed into a sandpit.
Crying, Nia then had blocks of wood thrown at her.
The radio was turned up to avoid neighbours hearing her cries. She was dragged through the sandpit later causing friction burns.
Nia also endured being lifted up until her head touched the ceiling & was then dropped.
Her head and feet took turns being hung over a fire burning in the fireplace.
The men would practise wrestling moves on Nia they had learned from a PS2 game & fold Nia up into a sofa bed and sit on her.
Nia was put up on the roof of her house and left up there for hours terrified.
"...both family members and neighbors, were aware of the neglect and abuse Nia was subject to...but did nothing to stop it."
The men were constantly thinking up new "games" to play with Nia. They enjoyed hurting little Nia.
In August 2007 Wiremu and Michael kicked Nia in the head three times. she fell unconscious & was put to bed.
36 hours later Nia was brought to the hospital. Doctors were told she had fallen off of Wiremu's shoulders.
Nia's brain injury was so severe parts of her tissue in her brain had already died.
While her daughter lay in a coma, Lisa went out clubbing with her friends.
On August 3rd Nia flew away to a safer, happier place.
Michael and Wiremus Curtis were sentenced to 17 years in prison, Michael Pearson and Oriwa Kemp to 3 years.
Lisa was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
"Think about that for a second. These less than humans didn't get pleasure from causing pain, like a sadist would, they got a good laugh."

A Maori community leader and child advocate wants New Zealanders to stop turning a blind eye to child abuse and dob in their neighbours.
His call comes after yesterday's guilty verdicts in the trial of those accused of killing Rotorua three-year-old Nia Glassie.
Hone Kaa, head of the child advocacy group Te Kahui Mana Ririki, said New Zealand's child abuse rate was unacceptably high, and more children like Nia would die if people continued to turn a blind eye.
"We can be sure she isn't going to be the last. We might pray that she is, but in the end it's the behaviour of adults that secures the safety of children."
Dr Kaa said New Zealanders ought to be "busybodies" and report abuse.
"We've got to learn to nark. I've said this before and I'm not afraid of saying it time and time again. Drop them in it."
Nia's mother, Lisa Kuka, was found guilty of two counts of manslaughter - one for failing to obtain medical treatment for the toddler before her death in August last year, and one for failing to protect her.
