A highway is any public road or other public way on land. It is used for major roads, but also includes other public roads and public tracks: It is not an equivalent term to freeway (motorway), or a translation for autobahn, autoroute, etc.
In North American and Australian English, major roads such as controlled-access highways or arterial roads are often state highways (Canada: provincial highways). Other roads may be designated "county highways" in the US and Ontario. These classifications refer to the level of government (state, provincial, county) that maintains the roadway.
In British English, "highway" is primarily a legal term. Everyday use normally implies roads, while the legal use covers any route or path with a public right of access, including footpaths etc.
The term has led to several related derived terms, including highway system, highway code, highway patrol and highwayman.
The term highway exists in distinction to "waterway".
Major highways are often named and numbered by the governments that typically develop and maintain them. Australia's Highway 1 is the longest national highway in the world at over 14,500 km or 9,000 mi and runs almost the entire way around the continent. China has the world's largest network of highways followed closely by the United States of America. Some highways, like the Pan-American Highway or the European routes, span multiple countries. Some major highway routes include ferry services, such as U.S. Route 10, which crosses Lake Michigan.
In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species. In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. Trees are not a taxonomic group but include a variety of plant species that have independently evolved a woody trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to compete for sunlight. In looser senses, the taller palms, the tree ferns, bananas and bamboos are also trees. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. The tallest known tree, a coast redwood named Hyperion, stands 115.6 m (379 ft) high. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are just over 3 trillion mature trees in the world.
A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree's growth and development. Flowers and fruit may also be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones; others, such as tree ferns, produce spores instead.
Sequoia sempervirens /sᵻˈkɔɪ.ə sɛmpərˈvaɪərənz/ is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae (formerly treated in Taxodiaceae). Common names include coast redwood, coastal redwood and California redwood. It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 1,200–1,800 years or more. This species includes the tallest living trees on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m) in height (without the roots) and up to 29.2 feet (8.9 m) in diameter at breast height / dbh. These trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth. Before commercial logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred naturally in an estimated 2,100,000 acres (8,500 km2) along much of coastal California (excluding southern California where rainfall is not sufficient) and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon within the United States. An estimated 70% or more of ancient old-growth redwood trees have been displaced by environmental changes or cut down.
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The Chandelier Tree in Drive-Thru Tree Park is 276-foot (84 m) tall coast redwood tree in Leggett, California with a 6-foot (1.8 m) wide by 6-foot-9-inch (2.06 m) high hole cut through its base to allow a car to drive through. Its base measures 16 ft (4.9 m) in diameter at dbh (chest-high). The sign claims 315 ft. high and 21 ft. wide, but a Certified Arborist experienced with tallest redwoods, used a laser rangefinder, measuring 276 ft. high and 16 ft. diameter. The name "Chandelier Tree" comes from its unique limbs that resemble a chandelier. The limbs, which measure from 4 to 7 ft (1.2 to 2.1 m) in diameter, begin 100 ft (30 m) above the ground. The tree is believed to have been carved in the early 1930s by Charlie Underwood.
A vintage postcard of the Chandelier Tree was shown during the opening credits of National Lampoon's Vacation.

During a severe July thunderstorm in Florida, I decided to record my 22 mile commute home. Not far into the commute I captured this lightning strike to a tree several hundred yards away. As you can tell, the thunder-clap was almost immediate.

World Famous Drive-Thru Tree Chandelier Tree Redwood Forest Leggett California National Park http://www.1ownercarguy.com We had to visit the Redwood Forest since we were so close. We asked someone how close we were to the famous drive-thru tree and said not far at all so we decided to go see it. I didn't know this but it is on private land that a family has owned since 1922. It's weird because you are driving into it and all you see is normal trees and you wonder if your in the right place then all of a sudden you are in the huge trees. It's pretty amazing and I would recommend visiting if you are ever in the area. The drive-thru tree is called the Chandelier Tree and it is 315 feet tall and 21 feet in diameter and they say it is over 2,400 years old. We had to wait in line to drive throug...
Highway Safety and Trees: The Delicate Balance - Federal Highway Administration 2006 - Publication FHWA-SA-06-13 - Everyone is a stakeholder when it comes to safety. Highway Safety and Trees: The Delicate Balance stresses that the design of highway projects should be a cooperative effort involving the highway agency, concerned communities, organizations, and individual citizens. Use this video to initiate a dialogue. The video provides an opportunity for all parties to recognize the benefits and risks associated with trees. It discusses many solutions from roadway relocation to use of guardrail to removal of trees from the most hazardous locations. No single solution is appropriate for all situations; every potential solution deserves discussion.

This is the 1st time I've been up highway 243 since I was a little boy. My mom used to take my brother and I up here when we were kids. It was an above average alpine trek. Acceptable road surfaces in the beginning, that improved a lot more as we went. We climbed to 6,000 feet which was also pretty damn cool. Some very very good scenery to be had up here. I'd have stopped for p...

This is a documentary movie uncovering the process of building a wooden house with hand tools from local materials starting from forest till the living space. I built my house from trees that I felled with an axe and two man crosscut saw in my own forest. I did it following the research of old carpenter's calendar that coniferous trees should be felled in January's first days when the new moon rises and the deciduous trees should be felled in the winter time during the old moon. In winter time trees are sleeping and the juice and moisture content is very low in them. As time passes timber felled in winter becomes light and strong. In the building process I used mostly traditional carpenters hand tools - axes, hand saws, timber framing chisels and slicks, old Stanley planes, augers, draw...
Saturday May 27 on the highway
Words and music by bob dylan
Highwater risin’, rising night and day
All the gold and silver are being stolen away
Big joe turner looking east and west from the dark room of his mind
He made it to kansas city, twelfth street and vine
Nothin’ standing there
Highwater everywhere
Highwater rising the shacks are sliding down
Folks lose their possessions, the folks are leaving town
Reformation shook it, broke it, then she hung it on the wall
Say you dancin’ with whom they tell you to or you don’t dance at all
It’s tough out there
Highwater everywhere
I got a craven love for blazin’ speed
I got a hopped up mustang ford
Jump into the wagon, love
Throw your panties overboard
I can write you poems, make a strong man lose his mind
I’m no pig without a wig, I hope you treat me kind
Things are breakin’ up out there
Highwater everywhere
Highwater rising, six inches above my head
Coffins droppin’ in the street like balloons made out of lead
Water poured into vicksburg, don’t know what I’m gonna do
Don’t reach out for me, she said, can’t you see I’m drowning too
It’s rough out there
Highwater everywhere
Well, george lewes told the englishman, the italian and the jew
You can’t open up your mind, boys, to every conceivable point of view
They got charles darwin trapped out there on highway 5
Judge says to the high sheriff, I want them dead or alive
Either one, I don’t care
Highwater everywhere
Well, the cuckoo is a pretty bird, she warbles as she flies
I’m preachin’ the word of god, I’m puttin’ out your eyes
I asked fat nancy for someth’n’ to eat, she said take it off the shelf
As great as you are man, you’ll never be greater than yourself
I told her I didn’t really care
Highwater everywhere
I get up in the mornin’, I believe I’ll dust my broom
Keepin’ away from the women, I’m givin’ them lots of room
Thunder rollin’ over clarksdale, everythin’ a-lookin’ blue
I just can’t be happy, love, unless you’re happy too
It’s bad out there
Highwater everywhere
