Freestyle rap

Freestyle is a style of rap, with or without instrumental beats, in which rap lyrics are improvised, i.e. performed with no previously composed lyrics, and "off the top of the head". It is similar to other improvisational music such as jazz (Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship describes it as being "like a jazz solo") where there is a lead instrumentalist acting as the improviser and the rest of the band providing the beat. Rap battles are improvised in this way.

Original definition

In the book How to Rap, J-lyric and Myka 9 note that originally a freestyle was a spit on no particular subject – J-lyric said, “in the 2000’s ‘ when we said freestyle rap, that meant that it was a rhyme that you kick that was free of style... it’s basically a rhyme just bragging about yourself.” Myka 9 adds, “back in the day freestyle was bust[ing] a rhyme about any random thing, and it was not a written rhyme or something memorized”.Divine Styler says: “in the school I come from, freestyling was a non-conceptual written rhyme... and now they call freestyling off the top of the head, so the era I come from it’s a lot different”.Kool Moe Dee also refers to this earlier definition in his book, There's A God On The Mic:

KPWR

KPWR (105.9 FM, Power 106) is a commercial radio station located in Los Angeles, California, broadcasting to the Greater Los Angeles area on an analog signal and in HD Radio. KPWR airs a Rhythmic Top 40 format playing hip hop and R&B with occasional rhythmic pop/dance titles. It is owned and operated by Emmis Communications and is one of its two flagship stations alongside WQHT ("Hot 97") in New York City.

KPWR's studios are based in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank, and the transmitter is at Mount Wilson.

History

Early years (1959-1986)

105.9 FM signed on as easy listening KFI-FM on July 15, 1946, later becoming KBMS in 1958 before adopting the KWST call letters and "K-West 106" moniker in 1969. During its years as KBMS and KWST, its format had been beautiful music prior to its flip to a rock format on January 1, 1975. K-West emulated the then-popular sound of KMET and KLOS. By 1981, though, the ratings had slipped and KWST had changed to a Top 40 format, and let all of their disc jockeys go. KWST eventually evolved into KMGG, or "L.A.'s Magic 106 FM" in summer 1982, and played upbeat Adult Contemporary music.

Beat Instrumental

Beat Instrumental was a UK monthly pop and rock magazine. First published in May 1963 as Beat Monthly it became Beat Instrumental Monthly with issue 18 and Beat Instrumental from issue 37. Like the weekly Melody Maker it aimed at musicians, emphasizing instruments, production and equipment in its interviews and moving easily to progressive rock in the late 1960s. It disappeared in 1980.
