The Kiel Canal is a 98-kilometre (61 mi) long freshwater canal in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The canal was finished in 1914 and links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. An average of 250 nautical miles (460 km) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. This not only saves time but also avoids potentially dangerous storm-prone seas.
Besides its two sea entrances, the Kiel Canal is linked, at Oldenbüttel, to the navigable River Eider by the short Gieselau Canal.
The first connection between the North and Baltic Seas was constructed while the area was ruled by Denmark-Norway. It was called the Eider Canal, which used stretches of the Eider River for the link between the two seas. The Eiderkanal was completed during the reign of Christian VII of Denmark in 1784 and was a 43-kilometre (27 mi) part of a 175-kilometre (109 mi) long waterway from Kiel to the Eider River's mouth at Tönning on the west coast. It was only 29 metres (95 ft) wide with a depth of 3 metres (10 ft), which limited the vessels that could use the canal to 300 tonnes displacement.
Experience a transit along the Kiel Canal! 97 kilometers long, 12 metres deep and 164 metres wide, the Kiel Canal runs between the Baltic and the North Sea. A number of small ferries run from each side of the canal to the other along the route. These are free of charge and ran by the Canal Authority. ************* HISTORY ************* The original Eider Canal, was built in 1784 and went from Holtenau on the Kiel fjord to Rendsburg. Construction of a larger and wider canal started in June 1887, when the foundation stone was laid by Kaiser Wilhelm I. It took 9000 workers 8 years to build, but in June 1895, the canal was officially opened by Kaiser Wilhelm II for transiting from Brunsbuttel to Holtenau. When the canal first opened, it was name the Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal. The name later cha...

In a word, just to watch
On May 23rd we began our transit of the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). We needed to go with the tide again to get up the river to the Brunsbüttel locks, but we also wanted to sleep in and use a little more of the wireless Internet we had paid for the night before, so we didnt leave until 10:45 a.m. With the current, our motor, and some wind, we made good time, reaching at locks around 1:00 p.m. Youre supposed to call for permission to transit when you get there, so I did that, all the while watching all the boats that had left ahead of us head into the lock. Whew! They told us to hurry up and get in there and they would wait. It was a full lock, and we rafted up with a Danish boat after squeezing past a huge motor yacht that was rafting with another huge yacht. Id been hoping to raft ...

Spectacular and amazing aerial views of the SILVER WHISPER on September 3th 2016 in the Kiel Canal. The first s...

Silversea Silver Cloud cruise ship going through the Kiel Canal in Germany from the North Sea to the Baltic sea on its journey from Amsterdam to Ronne. (Timelapse) Thursday 11 June 2015 (Silversea Cruise 1517)
Summer 2002, the Coaster UNO, laden with 2,400 tons of scrap, suffered engine failure in Germany's Kiel Canal. Colliding with a push barge and holed badly below the waterline, she capsized almost immediately partly blocking this critical waterway. Recovery team of SVITZER Salvage and Bugsier Hamburg were ordered by local authorities to urgently remove the vessel. The two-phase salvage plan involved cargo removal followed by vessel righting and re-float. Divers assisted in the process of patching the hole and having massive lifting slings inserted under the hull for the cranes. The need for speed was emphasized by the threatened congestion. The first attempt was succesful, the UNO being delivered to authorities for inspection with no unnecessary delay and without hindering canal traffic.

The Erie Canal Documentary - Geographic History. From the first days of the expansion of the British colonies from the coast of North America into the heartland of the continent, a recurring problem was that of transportation between the coastal ports and the interior. Close to the seacoast, rivers often provided adequate waterways, but the presence of the Appalachian Mountains, 400 miles (640 km) inland, presented a great challenge. Passengers and freight had to travel overland, a journey made more difficult by the rough condition of the roads. In 1800, it typically took 2.5 weeks to travel overland from New York to Cleveland, Ohio [460 miles (740 km)]; 4 weeks to Detroit [612 miles (985 km)].
