Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean, enclosed by Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic countries, and the North European Plain. It includes the Gulf of Bothnia, the Bay of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga, and the Bay of Gdańsk. The sea stretches from 53°N to 66°N latitude and from 10°E to 30°E longitude. A mediterranean sea of the Atlantic, with limited water exchange between the two bodies, the Baltic Sea drains through the Danish islands into the Kattegat by way of the straits of Øresund, the Great Belt, and the Little Belt.

Gothenburg is a seaport that was founded in 1621 and on Packhus Quay, close to both the Maritime Centre and the Opera, the Wilhelm Tham on which we shall travel across Sweden, awaits us. Shortly before Trollhättan our first adventure begins as the boat ascends within a masterpiece of canal design. Over a short distance, six lock systems built in a row overcome a height difference of forty four metres. One lock after the other opens up, and the inflow of water raises the boat to the next level. Our journey leads into the Bottensjön that is connected to Lake Vättern until we finally arrive at the port of Karlsborg. Behind the walls of Karlsborg Fortress are barracks, various buildings and a church. A truly massive structure, built in 1809 after Sweden had lost Finland to Russia. At Berg the captain skilfully steers the boat into the Carl Johans locks. Our descent is complete and we continue on the long drawn-out Lake Roxen. Again, a natural body of water forms part of the eastern Göta Canal, a remnant of the Ice Age, thirty three metres above sea level. The crossing of southern Sweden has only been made possible due to the construction of the Göta Canal, an amazing waterway with sixty six locks and countless bridges.

Russia’s Baltic Fleet was formed in 1703 under Peter the Great and is the oldest formation in the Russian Navy. Throughout its history, it has fought in many military conflicts, defending its country’s borders and perfecting its battle techniques. Today it boasts the most modern vessels, formidable weaponry and experienced seamen the Russian Navy has to offer. Meet the crews of two of its vessels, the corvette Soobrazitelny and the submarine Magnitogorsk, to learn more about life in the Baltic Fleet.
Joining the crew of Magnitogorsk, commanded by Captain Vladimir Nagornov, you'll find out about the procedures required for diving and surfacing, as well as certain superstitions shared by those on board. You'll also learn about the jobs required to keep the boat operational, how a submarine locates its targets covertly and discover more about the torpedoes it carries.
Aleksandr Slonov, Commander of Soobrazitelny, and his crew will take you along to a military parade, give you a guided tour of the ship and explain how the corvette's missiles are launched. With marines joining its ranks, you'll get the opportunity to accompany them to an armoured vehicle test track, where you can pick up some tips about how to handle these impressively versatile vehicles.
In the end, the two crews will engage in a competition to determine which of them is the best-prepared and most skilled in military combat. Pick your side and may the best team win.

The Sea of Åland (Finnish: Ahvenanmeri; Swedish: Ålands hav) is a waterway in the southern Gulf of Bothnia, between the Åland islands and Sweden. It connects the Bothnian Sea with the Baltic Sea proper. The seas are often choppy here. The narrowest part is named South Kvarken. The trench runnung on the bottom of the Sea of Åland contains the second deepest spot of the Baltic Sea, at a depth of 301 meters, which is second only to Landsort Deep.
