SKT, 170km/h ‘커넥티드카’서 5G 최고 속도 구현
Korean telecommunications operator SK Telecom says it has significantly increased the speed of its 5G connectivity, which is considered crucial for autonomous driving.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
Korea's major telecommunications operator SK Telecom said it's achieved a data transfer speed of 3-point-6 gigabits-per-second... in a test of its 5G network... on a connected car running at 170 kilometers per hour.
The test was conducted in collaboration with Ericsson and BMW... at the German automaker's driving center in Incheon, west of Seoul.
The data transfer rate is the fastest speed for a 5G pilot network... and double what SK Telecom achieved at the same location in November.
The company says it was able to do that thanks to beamforming and beam tracking technologies, which target satellites' relative positions.
5G is considered a must for connected cars that will allow autonomous driving and help prevent accidents.
Other technologies that could enhance the stability of connected car services... include improving image recognition and vehicle-to-everything communication technologies.
These features allow the cars to communicate, in real time, with other vehicles, traffic lights and surveillance cameras to understand and respond to unexpected situations and obstacles in a much shorter time.
SK Telecom said it will showcase the services accompanying its 5G network once it goes commercial in 2018.

There are a lot of challenges in the telecom industry. What do you see as three major challenges in the sector, and for STC specifically?
There are many challenges as the telecom industry is going through a major transformation as a response to disruptive technologies in how customers are getting their services. The major challenges that face the whole telecom industry are, I would say, the regulatory framework, human resources, and investments.
The regulatory framework is the most important challenge. How do you deal with such issues, and how do you ensure that proper frequencies are located to cater to the incredible demand that is happening on the mobile network? We are a highly regulated industry, while the digital players are not regulated, at all. If the digital players are providing services directly to the customer without regulation, then that creates a disruption in the model.
As far as incumbent operators who have inherited a large numbers of employees, if the aim is to become a digitally-enabled organization and investing in cloud services, then there is a need for a new skill set that is not typically available in conventional telecom companies.

Major

SK Telecom
SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (Hangul: SK텔레콤 or 에스케이텔레콤) is a South Korean wireless telecommunications operator, it is part of the SK Group, one of the country's largest chaebols.
SK Telecom is South Korea's largest wireless carrier, it leads the local market with 50.5 percent share as of 2008. Since its creation in 1984, the company has evolved from a first generation analog cellular system, to second generation CDMA, then to the world's first third-generation synchronized IMT-2000 cellular system. SK Telecom also became the world’s first carrier to commercialize HSDPA in May 2006. SK expanded into the landline market by acquiring second-rated fixed-line operator Hanaro Telecom in February 2008.

Ring of Fire
The Ring of Fire is an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. It has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. The Ring of Fire is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt.
About 90% of the world's earthquakes and 81% of the world's largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. The next most seismically active region (5–6% of earthquakes and 17% of the world's largest earthquakes) is the Alpide belt, which extends from Java to the northern Atlantic Ocean via the Himalayas and southern Europe.
All but 3 of the world's 25 largest volcanic eruptions of the last 11,700 years occurred at volcanoes in the Ring of Fire.

SKT, 170km/h ‘커넥티드카’서 5G 최고 속도 구현 Korean telecommunications operator SK Telecom says it has significantly increased the speed of its 5G connectivity, which is considered crucial for autonomous driving. Kim Ji-yeon reports. Korea's major telecommunications operator SK Telecom said it's achieved a data transfer speed of 3-point-6 gigabits-per-second... in a test of its 5G network... on a connected car running at 170 kilometers per hour. The test was conducted in collaboration with Ericsson and BMW... at the German automaker's driving center in Incheon, west of Seoul. The data transfer rate is the fastest speed for a 5G pilot network... and double what SK Telecom achieved at the same location in November. The company says it was able to do that thanks to beamforming and beam tracking technologies, which target satellites' relative positions. 5G is considered a must for connected cars that will allow autonomous driving and help prevent accidents. Other technologies that could enhance the stability of connected car services... include improving image recognition and vehicle-to-everything communication technologies. These features allow the cars to communicate, in real time, with other vehicles, traffic lights and surveillance cameras to understand and respond to unexpected situations and obstacles in a much shorter time. What do you see as three major challenges in the sector, and for STC specifically? There are many challenges as the telecom industry is going through a major transformation as a response to disruptive technologies in how customers are getting their services. The major challenges that face the whole telecom industry are, I would say, the regulatory framework, human resources, and investments. The regulatory framework is the most important challenge. How do you deal with such issues, and how do you ensure that proper frequencies are located to cater to the incredible demand that is happening on the mobile network? We are a highly regulated industry, while the digital players are not regulated, at all. If the digital players are providing services directly to the customer without regulation, then that creates a disruption in the model. Being in touch with friends or family through mobile is commonplace, these days!
In India, courses available for telecommunications are B.E. (Bachelor in Engineering) in telecommunications, B.Tech (Bachelor in Technology) or B.Sc in telecommunication! Various technology institutes, universities and colleges are providing courses in telecommunication. Post graduation courses are also available in the said technology universities or engineering colleges in India. Some well known institutes for telecommunications are AMC Engineering College, Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology, Indian institute of telecom management, Delhi. Apart from degree and post graduate degree, diploma and certification courses are also available in India. For example: Diploma in Security Technologies, Diploma in Telecom Management, Certificate course in WAN, LAN, CDMA, GSM, 3G, SDH, DWDM, SONET, VOIP, NGN, WiMax networks, etc. Certificate courses in Trouble shooting and networking, Certification in networking and telecommunication, Certificate courses in TCP/IP and Networking; Certificate courses in Cisco Networking. These diploma and certification courses add more to a mere graduation degree in telecommunication.
Telecommunication industry offers variety of jobs to aspiring candidates. Since Aviation department has converged with telecommunication, the opportunities for jobs have only increased. The major areas in telecommunication which are focused today are Optical networks, Wireless networks, Broadband technologies, Next generation networks etc. India is a second largest telecom in the world. Thus, the telecom industry is one of the biggest places to provide jobs to jobseekers. The profiles offered to candidates are Telecom engineer, System technician, SAP analyst, Server administration, Database administration, Network Engineers, Programmers etc. Candidates with telecommunication background can also join academia so that the knowledge is transferred to future generations.
The salary or remuneration of candidate depends upon his academic qualification, merits, training, experience, location of job, responsibilities stipulated, and employer who is hiring him or her. However, the starting salary for any fresher should not be less than 1.5 lakhs per annum.
Apart from educational qualification in telecommunication, the candidate is required to possess certain skills for a good job like problem solving ability, design skills, technical skills, risk identification skills, good communication skills, networking and programming skills, mechanical aptitude and skills, knowledge of scientific discoveries in the given field with commercial applications of them, mathematical precision etc.

Korean telecommunications operator SK Telecom says it has significantly increased the speed of its 5G connectivity, which is considered crucial for autonomous driving.

Korea's major telecommunications operator SK Telecom said it's achieved a data transfer speed of 3-point-6 gigabits-per-second... in a test of its 5G network... on a connected car running at 170 kilometers per hour.
The test was conducted in collaboration with Ericsson and BMW... at the German automaker's driving center in Incheon, west of Seoul.
The data transfer rate is the fastest speed for a 5G pilot network... and double what SK Telecom achieved at the same location in November.
The company says it was able to do that thanks to beamforming and beam tracking technologies, which target satellites' relative positions.
5G is considered a must for connected cars that will allow autonomous driving and help prevent accidents.
Other technologies that could enhance the stability of connected car services... include improving image recognition and vehicle-to-everything communication technologies.
These features allow the cars to communicate, in real time, with other vehicles, traffic lights and surveillance cameras to understand and respond to unexpected situations and obstacles in a much shorter time.
SK Telecom said it will showcase the services accompanying its 5G network once it goes commercial in 2018.

There are a lot of challenges in the telecom industry. What do you see as three major challenges in the sector, and for STC specifically?
There are many challenges as the telecom industry is going through a major transformation as a response to disruptive technologies in how customers are getting their services. The major challenges that face the whole telecom industry are, I would say, the regulatory framework, human resources, and investments.
The regulatory framework is the most important challenge. How do you deal with such issues, and how do you ensure that proper frequencies are located to cater to the incredible demand that is happening on the mobile network? We are a highly regulated industry, while the digital players are not regulated, at all. If the digital players are providing services directly to the customer without regulation, then that creates a disruption in the model.
As far as incumbent operators who have inherited a large numbers of employees, if the aim is to become a digitally-enabled organization and investing in cloud services, then there is a need for a new skill set that is not typically available in conventional telecom companies.

Korean telecommunications operator SK Telecom says it has significantly increased the speed of its 5G connectivity, which is considered crucial for autonomous driving.

Korea's major telecommunications operator SK Telecom said it's achieved a data transfer speed of 3-point-6 gigabits-per-second... in a test of its 5G network... on a connected car running at 170 kilometers per hour.
The test was conducted in collaboration with Ericsson and BMW... at the German automaker's driving center in Incheon, west of Seoul.
The data transfer rate is the fastest speed for a 5G pilot network... and double what SK Telecom achieved at the same location in November.
The company says it was able to do that thanks to beamforming and beam tracking technologies, which target satellites' relative positions.
5G is considered a must for connected cars that will allow autonomous driving and help prevent accidents.
Other technologies that could enhance the stability of connected car services... include improving image recognition and vehicle-to-everything communication technologies.
These features allow the cars to communicate, in real time, with other vehicles, traffic lights and surveillance cameras to understand and respond to unexpected situations and obstacles in a much shorter time.
SK Telecom said it will showcase the services accompanying its 5G network once it goes commercial in 2018.

There are a lot of challenges in the telecom industry. What do you see as three major challenges in the sector, and for STC specifically?
There are many challenges as the telecom industry is going through a major transformation as a response to disruptive technologies in how customers are getting their services. The major challenges that face the whole telecom industry are, I would say, the regulatory framework, human resources, and investments.
The regulatory framework is the most important challenge. How do you deal with such issues, and how do you ensure that proper frequencies are located to cater to the incredible demand that is happening on the mobile network? We are a highly regulated industry, while the digital players are not regulated, at all. If the digital players are providing services directly to the customer without regulation, then that creates a disruption in the model.
As far as incumbent operators who have inherited a large numbers of employees, if the aim is to become a digitally-enabled organization and investing in cloud services, then there is a need for a new skill set that is not typically available in conventional telecom companies.

Incoming Trunk lines are setup in Hunt Groups. If the main phone number is busy the call is automatically forwarded to the next number in the Hunt Group
Incoming Hunt Groups are setup by your local telephone company.
Outgoing calls can be routed to use selected trunk lines. This in configured in your PBX.
PBX and Voicemail
The PBX routes telephone calls
The Voicemail system provides all audio messaging. (Voicemail boxes, Message Boards, and Auto Attendant Messages)
Stations
All devices that connect to the PBX are "Stations". This includes telephones, call boxes, intercom systems, etc.
There are 2 types of stations; Analogue and Digital.
Analogue and Digital stations have to be connected to appropriate ports on the PBX. An analogue phone cannot connect to a digital port and vice versa.
Almost all fax machines and phones you buy at retail stores are analogue. If your new fax machine does not work it may be because it's plugged into a digital line.
Subscribers
Subscribers are users of the Voicemail system.
Subscribers do not have to have stations
Voicemail ports are the number of connections to the Voicemail system at any one time. This includes not just people retrieving their voicemail, but also incoming calls that connect to Auto Attendant messages.
Final Thoughts
Be careful before you touch! Most older telephone and voicemail systems were administered using a phone keypad, NOT and computer interface. If you mess something up it can be very difficult to rebuild a deleted Auto Attendant or such.
