The River Thames (i/tɛmz/ TEMZ) is a river that flows through southern England. It is the longest river entirely in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. While it is best known for flowing through London, the river also flows alongside other towns and cities, including Oxford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames and Windsor.
The river gives its name to three informal areas: the Thames Valley, a region of England around the river between Oxford and West London; the Thames Gateway; and the greatly overlapping Thames Estuary around the tidal Thames to the east of London and including the waterway itself. Thames Valley Police is a formal body that takes its name from the river, covering three counties.
In an alternative name, derived from its long tidal reach up to Teddington Lock in south west London, the lower reaches of the river are called the Tideway. The section of the river running through Oxford is traditionally called the Isis.
The administrative powers of the Thames Conservancy have been taken on with modifications by the Environment Agency and, in respect of the Tideway part of the river, such powers are split between the agency and the Port of London Authority.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.

It may look like a load of mud and rocks, but the banks of the River Thames offer a unique insight into London’s history. The Thames Discovery Programme is a community group run by the Museum of London Archaeology. It has been set up to let city dwellers discover more about what they call “London's Lost Waterways”. This week the group has been exploring the bankside next to Shakespeare’s Globe.

Mudlarking along the River Thames in London. The excitement about mudlarking is that you just never know what you will find, but you can be sure that even if you just find a small button, there is a fascinating story behind it. Follow me on my Thames mudlarking adventure this Saturday in April 2017 and see what interesting and quirky treasures I find in the Thames mud. If you are interested in mudlarking then you can find out about obtaining a permit on the website of the Port of London Authority. London was built on the Thames and this cruise gives a sense of the city that was once capital of the world's greatest empire. The journey reveals centuries of history and tradition: the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, one of the first churches built after the 17th century Great Fire, Billingsgate Fish Market, and the infamous Tower of London. Starting near Westminster we pass under ten bridges, including the Millennium Bridge and the magnificent Tower Bridge, built in 1894. At journey's end we taste our way through the Vinopolis Wine Museum and explore Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. For more information visit www.ontopoftheworld.net and check out Journeys through the British Isles, episode #7.
The Thames Barrier is the world's second-largest movable flood barrier (after the Oosterscheldekering in the Netherlands) and is located downstream of central London, United Kingdom. Operational since 1982, its purpose is to prevent the floodplain of all but the easternmost boroughs of Greater London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea. When needed, it is closed (raised) during high tide; at low tide it can be opened to enhance the river's flow towards the sea. Built approximately 3 km due east of the Isle of Dogs, its northern bank is in Silvertown in the London Borough of Newham and its southern bank is in the New Charlton area of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The report of Sir Hermann Bondi on the North Sea flood of 1953 affec...

We travel through the city past famous landmarks including Christchurch College and Meadows, the University boathouses and regatta course, the Head of the River and Folly Bridge . From the river we take in a side of Oxford's heritage rarely seen by visitors to the city. Quaint Osney Island, well-loved allotments and gardens and majestic and ancient Port Meadow are off the tourist trail but represent some of Oxford's most beautiful and intriguing scenery. Port Meadow, a vast area of common land, has remained little changed since prehistoric times and supports plants and bird-life in abundance. At the top of Port Meadow is Godstow. Godstow was the ultimate destination of Alice Liddell and Lewis Carroll when they followed an identical route to our trip while composing 'Alice's Adventures in W...
The Thames foreshore is a fascinating archaeological site when the tide is out. Each tide washes out pieces of history from London's past. And the Thames also throws out modern stories, such as messages in bottles and religious offerings. This video is a medley of recent mudlarking excursions along the River Thames. To mudlark the Thames, even if you are just searching by eye, you need to have a permit from the Port of London Authority. Details are to be found here: https://www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Thames-foreshore-access-including-metal-detecting-searching-and-digging I enjoy researching the history about my finds. In this video I refer to Thomas Jeptha Stubbs, a pipe maker from Plumstead in the 19th century. If you would like to read his story you can find it here: http://www.ti...

April 2017 saw the Tall Ships Festival come to Greenwich in London. A small number of ships were moored at Greenwich itself whilst the rest were up at Woolwich. That didn't stop some from going on a short sail down to Greenwich and back to test their sailing skills on Good Friday 14th April. A number of other boats were out on the River Thames to see the Tall Ships. Among them were the Steam Tug "Portwey" and the Mississippi Paddle-Steamer lookalike "Dixie Queen". In this video we are sat at The Gun pub on the banks over the River Thames at Docklands overlooking The O2 Arena. We see seven of the Tall Ships heading down to Greenwich and the back under their sail power as well as shots of "Portwey", "Dixie Queen", the Thames Sailing Barge "Hydrogen" on its way to the Pool of London, and fi...
