Seoul, in the Republic of Korea, is home to the oldest existing royal Confucian shrine.
The Jongmyo Shrine is an amazing structure of great beauty, religious importance, and historic value.
The shrine is still in use and memorial rituals for Korean royalty are performed on a regular basis.
The original shrine here was built in the late 14th century, was subsequently burned in an invasion, and later rebuilt at the start of the 17th century.

1. Seoul is home to a number of historic sites and monuments. In addition, the Seoul National Capital Area has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are the Changdeokgung Palace Complex, the Hwaseong Fortress, the Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
2. The number “4″ is considered extremely unlucky, to the point where most buildings in Seoul do not have a 4th floor.

Jongmyo is the oldest and most authentic of the Confucian royal shrines to have been preserved.
Dedicated to the forefathers of the Joseon dynasty founded in the 14th century here in Korea... its unique spatial layout and tradition have been preserved in its entirety to this day.
Our Kim Jung-soo takes us on a tour of the Jongmyo Shrine, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
At the center of metropolitan Seoul lies a solemn royal Confucian shrine.
The structure is Jongmyo Shrine, built in the year 1394 under the order of King Taejo.
Although Koreans have long been proud of their Confucian roots, no other building better embodies the Confucian philosophy of filial piety, or "hyo" because the shrine is the site of one of the country's most sacred ancestral rites.
The Jongmyo Jerye is a ceremonial rite held for worshipping the late kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty... and involves ritual music, called Jongmyo Jeryeak, as well as the spirit tablets of past royalty.
The ceremony used to be held five times a year, but now, it has become an annual event, held on the first Sunday in May.
The shrine was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in December of 1995 and both the ritual and ritual music were recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001.
The Jongmyo Jerye ceremony is comprised of three main parts.
Arriving at the shrine after a long procession, the king, accompanied by his civil and military servants, initiates an invitation and greeting of the royal spirits by reciting prayers.
Next, the spirits are entertained with music, 64 kinds of food and 64 female dancers.
Finally, the spirits are sent off to return to heaven, food and wine are shared by the officiants, and the prayer papers are burned.
Although the ceremony takes place once a year, the shrine is open to the public from March to September.
"Over 500 hundred years of Joseon Dynasty's history is laid to rest, right here at the Jongmyo Shrine. Visitors interested in exploring the shrine can also use a special app called 'Jongmyo in My Hand,' to navigate through the cultural and historical site."
The augmented reality app, developed by Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, offers narration in four languages, telling users stories and anecdotes related to the shrine's main structures.
Jongmyo Shrine contains five main houses, and each one plays an important and distinct role in the annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual.
The main setting for the ceremony is Jeongjeon Hall, which is composed of 19 spirit chambers... and houses over 49 spirit tablets for the Joseon kings and queens.
Hyangdaecheong is the room high-ranking officials used to get themselves ready for the grand ceremony.
The king and the rest of the royal family would use the three buildings of the Jaegung Area to purify body and soul before the ritual.
The king and his heir apparent would then wait for their turn to participate in the ritual at Jeonjacheong Hall, which is next to the main Jeongjeon Hall.
Yeongnyeongjeon, also known as the Hall of Eternal Peace, functions as an annex to the main Jeongjeon Hall, and houses 34 spirit tablets in 16 chambers.
In addition, the tablets of tyrannical kings such as Yeonsangun or Gwanghaegun have been excluded from the shrine as a whole, as their behaviors have been deemed below Confucian standards.
Over 180-thousand people visited Jongmyo Shrine during the first half of the year.
While the annual Jongmyo Jeyre is designed to offer the heavenly spirits consolation, it is evident that the shrine itself offers a much-needed atmosphere of serenity and peace for modern-day visitors as well.

Jongmyo
Jongmyo is a Confucian shrine dedicated to the perpetuation of memorial services for the deceased kings and queens of the Korean Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). According to UNESCO, the shrine is the oldest royal Confucian shrine preserved and the ritual ceremonies continue a tradition established in the 14th century. Such shrines existed during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period (57-668), but these have not survived. The Jongmyo Shrine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995.
Jongmyo is adjacent to Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung in the south. They used to be connected in the Joseon period, but were separated by a road built by Japanese colonialists. Nowadays there is a construction plan to recover the original structure of the shrine.
The main buildings of Jongmyo was constructed in October, 1394 when Taejo, first king of Joseon Dynasty, moved the capital to Seoul. It was destroyed by fire in the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98), then rebuilt in 1608.

유네스코 유형 문화재 소개: 종묘 Jongmyo is the oldest and most authentic of the Confucian royal shrines to have been preserved. Dedicated to the forefathers of the Joseon dynasty founded in the 14th century here in Korea... its unique spatial layout and tradition have been preserved in its entirety to this day. Our Kim Jung-soo takes us on a tour of the Jongmyo Shrine, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage. At the center of metropolitan Seoul lies a solemn royal Confucian shrine. The structure is Jongmyo Shrine, built in the year 1394 under the order of King Taejo. Although Koreans have long been proud of their Confucian roots, no other building better embodies the Confucian philosophy of filial piety, or "hyo" because the shrine is the site of one of the country's most sacred ancestral rites. The Jongmyo Jerye is a ceremonial rite held for worshipping the late kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty... and involves ritual music, called Jongmyo Jeryeak, as well as the spirit tablets of past royalty. The ceremony used to be held five times a year, but now, it has become an annual event, held on the first Sunday in May. The shrine was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in December of 1995 and both the ritual and ritual music were recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001. The Jongmyo Jerye ceremony is comprised of three main parts. Arriving at the shrine after a long procession, the king, accompanied by his civil and military servants, initiates an invitation and greeting of the royal spirits by reciting prayers. Next, the spirits are entertained with music, 64 kinds of food and 64 female dancers. Finally, the spirits are sent off to return to heaven, food and wine are shared by the officiants, and the prayer papers are burned. Although the ceremony takes place once a year, the shrine is open to the public from March to September. "Over 500 hundred years of Joseon Dynasty's history is laid to rest, right here at the Jongmyo Shrine. Visitors interested in exploring the shrine can also use a special app called 'Jongmyo in My Hand,' to navigate through the cultural and historical site." The augmented reality app, developed by Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, offers narration in four languages, telling users stories and anecdotes related to the shrine's main structures. Jongmyo Shrine contains five main houses, and each one plays an important and distinct role in the annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual. The main setting for the ceremony is Jeongjeon Hall, which is composed of 19 spirit chambers... and houses over 49 spirit tablets for the Joseon kings and queens. Hyangdaecheong is the room high-ranking officials used to get themselves ready for the grand ceremony. The king and the rest of the royal family would use the three buildings of the Jaegung Area to purify body and soul before the ritual. The king and his heir apparent would then wait for their turn to participate in the ritual at Jeonjacheong Hall, which is next to the main Jeongjeon Hall. Yeongnyeongjeon, also known as the Hall of Eternal Peace, functions as an annex to the main Jeongjeon Hall, and houses 34 spirit tablets in 16 chambers. In addition, the tablets of tyrannical kings such as Yeonsangun or Gwanghaegun have been excluded from the shrine as a whole, as their behaviors have been deemed below Confucian standards. Over 180-thousand people visited Jongmyo Shrine during the first half of the year. While the annual Jongmyo Jeyre is designed to offer the heavenly spirits consolation, it is evident that the shrine itself offers a much-needed atmosphere of serenity and peace for modern-day visitors as well. 1. Seoul is home to a number of historic sites and monuments. In addition, the Seoul National Capital Area has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are the Changdeokgung Palace Complex, the Hwaseong Fortress, the Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
2. The number “4″ is considered extremely unlucky, to the point where most buildings in Seoul do not have a 4th floor.

Jongmyo is the oldest and most authentic of the Confucian royal shrines to have been preserved.
Dedicated to the forefathers of the Joseon dynasty founded in the 14th century here in Korea... its unique spatial layout and tradition have been preserved in its entirety to this day.
Our Kim Jung-soo takes us on a tour of the Jongmyo Shrine, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
At the center of metropolitan Seoul lies a solemn royal Confucian shrine.
The structure is Jongmyo Shrine, built in the year 1394 under the order of King Taejo.
Although Koreans have long been proud of their Confucian roots, no other building better embodies the Confucian philosophy of filial piety, or "hyo" because the shrine is the site of one of the country's most sacred ancestral rites.
The Jongmyo Jerye is a ceremonial rite held for worshipping the late kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty... and involves ritual music, called Jongmyo Jeryeak, as well as the spirit tablets of past royalty.
The ceremony used to be held five times a year, but now, it has become an annual event, held on the first Sunday in May.
The shrine was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in December of 1995 and both the ritual and ritual music were recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001.
The Jongmyo Jerye ceremony is comprised of three main parts.
Arriving at the shrine after a long procession, the king, accompanied by his civil and military servants, initiates an invitation and greeting of the royal spirits by reciting prayers.
Next, the spirits are entertained with music, 64 kinds of food and 64 female dancers.
Finally, the spirits are sent off to return to heaven, food and wine are shared by the officiants, and the prayer papers are burned.
Although the ceremony takes place once a year, the shrine is open to the public from March to September.
"Over 500 hundred years of Joseon Dynasty's history is laid to rest, right here at the Jongmyo Shrine. Visitors interested in exploring the shrine can also use a special app called 'Jongmyo in My Hand,' to navigate through the cultural and historical site."
The augmented reality app, developed by Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, offers narration in four languages, telling users stories and anecdotes related to the shrine's main structures.
Jongmyo Shrine contains five main houses, and each one plays an important and distinct role in the annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual.
The main setting for the ceremony is Jeongjeon Hall, which is composed of 19 spirit chambers... and houses over 49 spirit tablets for the Joseon kings and queens.
Hyangdaecheong is the room high-ranking officials used to get themselves ready for the grand ceremony.
The king and the rest of the royal family would use the three buildings of the Jaegung Area to purify body and soul before the ritual.
The king and his heir apparent would then wait for their turn to participate in the ritual at Jeonjacheong Hall, which is next to the main Jeongjeon Hall.
Yeongnyeongjeon, also known as the Hall of Eternal Peace, functions as an annex to the main Jeongjeon Hall, and houses 34 spirit tablets in 16 chambers.
In addition, the tablets of tyrannical kings such as Yeonsangun or Gwanghaegun have been excluded from the shrine as a whole, as their behaviors have been deemed below Confucian standards.
Over 180-thousand people visited Jongmyo Shrine during the first half of the year.
While the annual Jongmyo Jeyre is designed to offer the heavenly spirits consolation, it is evident that the shrine itself offers a much-needed atmosphere of serenity and peace for modern-day visitors as well.

Jongmyo, the shrine where the memorial tablets of past kings and queens are housed, was one of the most majestic and sacred buildings of the Joseon dynasty. Its architecture visually renders such Confucian values that are the guiding princoples of Joseon's political philosophy as piety and propriety toward ancestors. Past the front gate of Jongmyo, three paths lead to the shrine's prayer halls. Old Men Play Games Near Jongmyo Park
We discovered the area just South of the entrance to Jongmyo Park to be old man central! There was enough Brylcreem to grease an army tank, dentures to pave a plaza, Old Spice to fog up half of Seoul... Games of baduk and janggi were in progress all over the place. Boards and pieces were available for anyone to start up a match. It was inspiring to see a peoples, often hidden away and neglected, socialize so vigorously and coming together in a public space as a thriving community. Sure beats collecting dust in a rocking chair. A kerfuffle also broke out while we were there (over politics or religion, probably). This was interesting as both the first real confrontation we've witnessed in Korea, and as further exhibition of some senior-citizen brio. Go, old men, go!

The shrine was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in December of 1995 and both the ritual and ritual music were recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001.
The Jongmyo Jerye ceremony is comprised of three main parts.
Arriving at the shrine after a long procession, the king, accompanied by his civil and military servants, initiates an invitation and greeting of the royal spirits by reciting prayers.
Next, the spirits are entertained with music, 64 kinds of food and 64 female dancers.
Finally, the spirits are sent off to return to heaven, food and wine are shared by the officiants, and the prayer papers are burned.
Although the ceremony takes place once a year, the shrine is open to the public from March to September.
"Over 500 hundred years of Joseon Dynasty's history is laid to rest, right here at the Jongmyo Shrine. Visitors interested in exploring the shrine can also use a special app called 'Jongmyo in My Hand,' to navigate through the cultural and historical site."
The augmented reality app, developed by Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, offers narration in four languages, telling users stories and anecdotes related to the shrine's main structures.
Jongmyo Shrine contains five main houses, and each one plays an important and distinct role in the annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual.
The main setting for the ceremony is Jeongjeon Hall, which is composed of 19 spirit chambers... and houses over 49 spirit tablets for the Joseon kings and queens.
Hyangdaecheong is the room high-ranking officials used to get themselves ready for the grand ceremony.
The king and the rest of the royal family would use the three buildings of the Jaegung Area to purify body and soul before the ritual.
The king and his heir apparent would then wait for their turn to participate in the ritual at Jeonjacheong Hall, which is next to the main Jeongjeon Hall.
Yeongnyeongjeon, also known as the Hall of Eternal Peace, functions as an annex to the main Jeongjeon Hall, and houses 34 spirit tablets in 16 chambers.
In addition, the tablets of tyrannical kings such as Yeonsangun or Gwanghaegun have been excluded from the shrine as a whole, as their behaviors have been deemed below Confucian standards.
Over 180-thousand people visited Jongmyo Shrine during the first half of the year.
While the annual Jongmyo Jeyre is designed to offer the heavenly spirits consolation, it is evident that the shrine itself offers a much-needed atmosphere of serenity and peace for modern-day visitors as well.

Arriving at the shrine after a long procession, the king, accompanied by his civil and military servants, initiates an invitation and greeting of the royal spirits by reciting prayers.
Next, the spirits are entertained with music, 64 kinds of food and 64 female dancers.
Finally, the spirits are sent off to return to heaven, food and wine are shared by the officiants, and the prayer papers are burned.
Although the ceremony takes place once a year, the shrine is open to the public from March to September.
"Over 500 hundred years of Joseon Dynasty's history is laid to rest, right here at the Jongmyo Shrine. Visitors interested in exploring the shrine can also use a special app called 'Jongmyo in My Hand,' to navigate through the cultural and historical site."
The augmented reality app, developed by Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, offers narration in four languages, telling users stories and anecdotes related to the shrine's main structures.
Jongmyo Shrine contains five main houses, and each one plays an important and distinct role in the annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual.
The main setting for the ceremony is Jeongjeon Hall, which is composed of 19 spirit chambers... and houses over 49 spirit tablets for the Joseon kings and queens.
Hyangdaecheong is the room high-ranking officials used to get themselves ready for the grand ceremony.
The king and the rest of the royal family would use the three buildings of the Jaegung Area to purify body and soul before the ritual.
The king and his heir apparent would then wait for their turn to participate in the ritual at Jeonjacheong Hall, which is next to the main Jeongjeon Hall.
Yeongnyeongjeon, also known as the Hall of Eternal Peace, functions as an annex to the main Jeongjeon Hall, and houses 34 spirit tablets in 16 chambers.
In addition, the tablets of tyrannical kings such as Yeonsangun or Gwanghaegun have been excluded from the shrine as a whole, as their behaviors have been deemed below Confucian standards.
Over 180-thousand people visited Jongmyo Shrine during the first half of the year.
While the annual Jongmyo Jeyre is designed to offer the heavenly spirits consolation, it is evident that the shrine itself offers a much-needed atmosphere of serenity and peace for modern-day visitors as well.

It was inspiring to see a peoples, often hidden away and neglected, socialize so vigorously and coming together in a public space as a thriving community. Sure beats collecting dust in a rocking chair.
A kerfuffle also broke out while we were there (over politics or religion, probably). This was interesting as both the first real confrontation we've witnessed in Korea, and as further exhibition of some senior-citizen brio.

Jongmyo is a Confucian shrine dedicated to the perpetuation of memorial services for the deceased kings and queens of the Korean Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897).
According to UNESCO, the shrine is the oldest royal Confucian shrine preserved and the ritual ceremonies continue a tradition established in the 14th century.
Such shrines existed during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period (57-668), but these have not survived.
Jongmyo is adjacent to Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung in the south. They used to be connected in the Joseon period, but were separated by a road built by Japanese colonialists.
The main buildings of Jongmyo was constructed in October, 1394 when Taejo, first king of Joseon Dynasty, moved the capital to Seoul.
It was destroyed by fire in the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98), then rebuilt in 1608.
The Jongmyo Shrine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995.

Le jongmyo jeryeak est l’expression la plus subtile de l’art de cour coréen. Combinant les danses rituelles et les musiques des cérémonies confucéennes, cette tradition est née au XVe siècle et a accompagné l’essor de la grande dynastie Joseon qui régna sur la Corée de 1392 à 1910.
Représenté sans interruption durant plus de cinq cents ans, et désormais une fois par an en Corée, ce rituel constitue un véritable « conservatoire » des éléments fondateurs de la culture coréenne, lesquels ont exercé une influence importante sur l’art et la culture des pays voisins, Chine et Japon.
Dans sa forme historique, celle-là même qui sera présentée sur la scène de Chaillot et pour la première fois hors de Corée, le jongmyo jeryeak réunit sur scène près d’une centaine d’artistes, danseurs, chanteurs et musiciens. La troupe du National Gugak Center (Centre national des arts traditionnels du spectacle vivant) conjugue les ilmu, somptueuses danses en ligne de trente-cinq danseurs, avec une musique solennelle interprétée par deux orchestres.
