The Winterville Community Fire Department is collecting clothes and other items after a family’s home was destroyed by a fire last week on Abbott Farm Road.

A man, his wife, another adult, and an 8-month-old baby boy were living in the home in the 1600 block of Abbott Farm Road when a smoke alarm alerted them to a fire about 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday. The Johnson family and their two dogs were able to escape the fire without injury, but their double-wide mobile home and nearly everything in it was a total loss.

One of their vehicles also was destroyed, and the other one was damaged, according to Chief Jonathan Heltzel of the Winterville Community Fire Department. The fire started in the kitchen area of the home.

On its Facebook page, Winterville Community Fire Department put out a call for help for the family, and people have been donating.

“The amount of stuff they’ve received from the public has been incredible,” Heltzel said.

The family received a car seat and changing table for the baby almost immediately, and the Red Cross and a local church paid for a motel room for them, Heltzel said.

The family still was looking for a place to live the last time Heltzel talked to them, he said Monday.

The family will need everything to start over, including furniture, kitchen pots, pans, utensils and plates. They also need men’s clothing in sizes 4X for shirts, 44 for pants and 12 for shoes; clothing for two females in sizes large and extra large for shirts, 11/12 and 14/16 for pants and seven for shoes; and baby boy clothing in sizes 6-9 or 12 months and infant shoes in size 2.

Anyone who wishes to donate may drop the donations off at the Winterville Community Fire Station at 224 Forlines Road, between Adams Brick and the Kiwanis building, from 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
