Sudan (Arabic: السودان as-Sūdān, English pronunciation (US) i/suˈdæn/, (GB) /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), is a country in north-east Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It is the third largest country in Africa. The River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam.
Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. During the pre-dynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 15th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language (earliest records dating to the 9th century). Sudan was the largest country in Africa and the Arab world until 2011, when South Sudan separated into an independent country, following an independence referendum. Sudan is now the third largest country in Africa (after Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and also the third largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria and Saudi Arabia).

Famine in South Sudan has already been declared in one state. The country has suffered from a brutal 3-year civil war. It's uprooted some 3 million people creating even more problems for a country with insecure food supplies and a volatile economy. And it's now caused one of the world's biggest refugee crises. Our correspondent Catherine Byaruhanga sent this report from Northern Uganda. President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court on counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, says he will step down in 2020, when his current mandate ends. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Mr Bashir has denied allegations of abuses perpetrated by the Sudanese forces in renewed violence in Darfur this year. Mr Bashir spoke to the BBC's Thomas Fessy, who began by asking him to respond to the allegations. United Nations officials rarely use the words 'genocide' or 'ethnic cleaning', but they say the violence in South Sudan has the potential to be just that. Fighting has been raging there between political and ethnic factions since a delicate peace deal was shattered in July. That has forced hundreds of thousands to flee across the border into Uganda. Our Africa Correspondent Alastair Leithead has met some of those making the trip, and has this report. JUBA At least 272 people have died in fighting between South Sudan's rival factions in the capital Juba, including 33 civilians, a government source said on Sunday, as heavy gunfire erupted again in the city and many residents sought shelter at a U.N. base. The fighting first broke out on Thursday and Friday between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and soldiers who support vice president Riek Machar. The violence raises fears South Sudan could slide back into conflict after emerging from a two-year civil war, which began in December 2013 after Kiir sacked Machar as vice president. ►Circle us on Google + http://goo.gl/TXeBfX ►Subscribe Channel http://goo.gl/mqt0wI ►Don't forget to Like * Comment * Share this video. ----------------------------------------------------------------------...
A famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, the first to be announced in any part of the world in six years. The government and the United Nations report that some 100,000 people are facing starvation, with a million more on the brink of famine. A combination of civil war and an economic collapse have been blamed. There have been warnings of famine in Yemen, Somalia and north-eastern Nigeria, but South Sudan is the first to declare one. It's been another busy year for Sudan as the country continues to find lasting peace. Prospects for peace in Sudan are still far away following a fall-out recently between South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, and his arch-rival Riek Machar. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than 2 million forced from their homes since the conflict broke out in December 2013, pushing the world's youngest nation to the brink of famine. A major peace initiative is being planned in the New Year under the "National Dialogue Initiative." To bring us to speed on the situation in Sudan we are joined in SABC Pretoria studio by Sudanese Ambassador to South Africa his Excellency Omer M.A. Siddig. Synopsis: Slavery was officially abolished in French Sudan (nowadays Mali) by the French colonial administration in 1905 but effective emancipation of former slaves happened to be a very long process, which would still be topical beyond the Independence of Mali in 1960. Our documentary film collects the memories of slavery in Kayes. By telling the story of those who resisted slavery by escaping their masters and by founding new independent and free communities in the district of Kayes in the first half of the twentieth century, this documentary film is a unique audiovisual archive of slave emancipation in Mali. Anna Chan: A U.N. humanitarian affairs spokesman says the death toll in Darfur may be much worse than previously thought. The new figure... well over 300,000. But Sudan's ambassador to the U.N. says the figure is grossly exaggerated. Let's hear their rationale. The conflict in Darfur is now five years old. During that time the region has seen a widespread humanitarian crisis. But exactly how many people have lost their lives? Many more than current estimates suggest according to an address to the U.N. Security Council by John Holmes, a senior U.N. humanitarian official. [John Holmes, U.N. Under-Secretary General]: "A study in 2006 suggested that 200,000 had lost their lives from the combined effects of the conflict. That figure must be much higher now, perhaps half as much again. (14 Jan 2017) Sudan on Saturday welcomed the end of a US economic embargo on the African country, the lifting of trade and financial sanctions and the paving of the way to a strengthening of bilateral ties. On Friday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to permanently revoke a broad range of sanctions after a six-month waiting period. On Saturday, Sudan's Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour held a news conference to make the announcement to journalists. The policy shift authorises all US-Sudan trade previously blocked by sanctions to resume immediately. It also unfreezes property and other assets that had been locked up in US banks. Business with oil and gas industries in Sudan, such as pipelines and oilfield services, is now permitted. Americans can facilitate financ...

South Sudan has what many business people describe as a "war economy"; people there are struggling to keep their companies afloat as a result of the brutal conflict which broke out between government and rebel forces in December 2013. Even if the recent peace deal holds, it will take some time for the economy to recover. Despite the challenges of civil war there are entrepreneurs and businesses with big hopes. But they have to deal with the lack of dollars in the country, and that has been driving up prices every day. Catherine Byaruhanga reports from Juba.
Josh Sigurdson talks with author and economic analyst John Sneisen about the current hyper-inflation in South Sudan as the rate continues to skyrocket. As we reported on last winter, South Sudan will only continue to see an escalated inflation rate as long as central bankers and globalist entities like the IMF continue to intervene, central plan and manipulate the economy. As civil war continues to rage, the government and globalist central bankers continue to ensure they can complete enslave the populace as the populace is forced into dependency due to vast amounts of debt and lack of livable conditions. This is why we spread this information. To keep you informed and warned of inevitable events like this. Please heed the warning and insure yourself for the global financial collapse on o...

The United States is expected to start lifting sanctions on Sudan from December. Khartoum has been under economic and trade sanctions since 1997. The U.S. imposed the restrictions following claims the country was supporting terrorist groups and violating citizens' human rights.

The authorities in what will soon be Africa's 54th state are eager to build a robust environment for business. South Sudan is feeling the pain of high commodity prices following tensions with the north. But foreign traders, especially from Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia, have filled the gap left by the departure of many northerners. The new state has no industry and infrastructure to manufacture goods locally raising fears it is in for a difficult birth.

Southern Sudan will become an independent country in July 2011. After many decades of on off war with the north the Republic of Southern Sudan will start life with little infrastructure, few services like schools or clinics and an economy wholly dependent on oil extraction, a process still largely controlled by Sudan’s capital Khartoum and one which few southerners understand or have any active role in. But there are some things are not in short supply: fighting spirit, culture, river, land … and cattle. After years of rebel fighting the complicated work that now lies ahead is how to use these resources to build up a country. In Southern Sudan it is individuals from pastoralist groups that occupy the main jobs in the army, the government, in the nascent business sector and these me...

Musical performance by a Sudanese group at Delhi Haat, New Delhi... Sudan has a rich and unique musical culture that has been through chronic instability and repression during the modern history of Sudan. Beginning with the imposition of strict sharia law in 1989, many of the country's most prominent musicians and poets, like poets Mahjoub Sharif, were imprisoned while others, like Mohammed el Amin and Mohammed Wardi (Mohammed el amin returned to Sudan in 1991 and Mohammed Wardi returned to Sudan in 2003), fled to Cairo. Traditional music suffered too, with traditional Zār ceremonies being interrupted and drums confiscated. At the same time, however, the European militaries contributed to the development of Sudanese music by introducing new instruments and styles; military bands, especial...

Most women and girls in the rebel-held Nuba Mountains of Sudan lack access to reproductive health care, including emergency obstetric care. Their plight is one of the little known yet far-reaching effects of years of obstruction of aid to the area by the Sudanese government and armed opposition. Women and girls cannot get contraception and have little access to health care if they face complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The parties to the six-year-long conflict, the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North (SPLA-North), have both obstructed impartial humanitarian aid.

Fighting between Sudan’s army and the Sudan People's Liberation Army-North (SPLM-N) rebels has reportedly broken out in South Kordofan after months of calm in the state, the two sides said on Tuesday, with both giving differing accounts of the fighting. Travel video about destination Libya. Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive...
While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. Hi guys !! So I decided to do this video to introduce you guys to my culture (sudanese culture). So I decided to include all my sudanese friends and all decided to wear the sudanese tradition clothing. This video is a lookbook of the different thoubs sudanese women wear but it also give you a brief idea of the diversity in sudan. We are all from different tribes and we all look different, but at the end of the day we are all pure sudanese. As sudanese we often get told that we don't look sudanese and thats mainly because people are not exposed to the different group of sudanese and therefore they believe that we all look alike. Anyways this was just a fun little video I got to do with my beautiful friends. I hope you guys enjoy it. Instagram: Gisma_d Snapchat: Gisma_d Room Tour: https:/...

The nightmare civil war in South Sudan, explained Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Widespread ethnic cleansing, burning villages, looming starvation, and gang rape “so prevalent that it’s become ‘normal.’” This is what UN experts found when they took a 10-day trip to the African country of South Sudan in late November. Now they’re sounding the alarm, warning that South Sudan, the world’s newest country, is “on the brink of catastrophe” that could rival the horrors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. In that conflict, some 800,000 people were slaughtered in the span of just 100 days while the international community watched, unable or unwilling to stop the bloodshed. Former President Bill Clinton has called his decision not to intervene one of the biggest regrets of his presidenc...

The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar's Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe. Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict. VICE News arrived in Juba and found the army desperate to dispel rumors that rebels were advancing on the capital. Soldiers were keen to take our correspondents on a trip with them into the bush to recapture the strategic city of Bor from the rebels... ...

The Longest War: Sudan's civil war raged for over two decades. This film gives incredible insight into its bloody and violent history.
