George Wallace is a 1997 television film starring Gary Sinise as George Wallace, the former Governor of Alabama. It was directed by John Frankenheimer, who won an Emmy award for it; Sinise and Mare Winningham also won Emmys for their performances. The film was based on the 1996 biography Wallace : The Classic Portrait of Alabama Governor George Wallace by Marshall Frady, who also co-wrote the teleplay.
Frankenheimer's film was highly praised by critics: in addition to the Emmy awards, it received the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries/Motion Picture made for TV. Angelina Jolie also received a Golden Globe for her performance as Wallace's second wife, Cornelia.
George Wallace portrays the political life of a complex man. Initially an ordinary Southern judge, Wallace transforms himself to achieve political success and glory, becoming one of the most reviled political figures in America. Finally, a failed assassination attempt which leaves him paralyzed and in pain leads him to realize what he has become.
George Corley Wallace, Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998) was an American politician and the 45th Governor of Alabama, having served two nonconsecutive terms and two consecutive terms as a Democrat: 1963–1967, 1971–1979 and 1983–1987. Wallace has the third longest gubernatorial tenure in post-Constitutional U.S. history, at 16 years and four days. He was a U.S. Presidential candidate for four consecutive elections, in which he sought the Democratic Party nomination in 1964, 1972, and 1976, and was the American Independent Party candidate in the 1968 presidential election. He remains the last third party candidate to receive a state's electoral college votes.
A 1972 assassination attempt left Wallace paralyzed, and he used a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. He is remembered for his Southern populist and segregationist attitudes during the mid-20th century period of the African-American civil rights movement and activism, which gained passage of federal civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s to enforce constitutional rights for all citizens. He eventually renounced segregationism but remained a populist.
George Douglas Wallace, Baron Wallace of Coslany (18 April 1906 – 11 November 2003) was a British Labour Party politician.
Wallace was born in Cheltenham and attended Cheltenham Central School. He became an office manager before volunteering to join the RAF in 1941, serving during World War II and rising to the rank of Sergeant.
He was elected Member of Parliament for Chislehurst in 1945 general election. In 1950, Wallace lost to Conservative Dame Patricia Hornsby-Smith by 167 votes. It was 14 years later in 1964 before he returned to Parliament, representing Norwich North. He retired from the House of Commons at the February 1974 election, and became a life peer as Baron Wallace of Coslany, of Coslany in the City of Norwich, on 17 January 1975.
Wallace served as a Lord-in-Waiting from 1977 to 1979, and was a member of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission from 1970 to 1986.
George Wallace is an American comedian and actor.
He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Mary Lou and George Wallace, Sr. Wallace was educated at Lynwood Park Elementary School and Lynwood Park High School.
His mother died when he was sixteen, prompting him to move to Ohio where he found a job with Firestone Tire. As part of the company's tuition reimbursement program, Wallace enrolled in the University of Akron, in Akron, Ohio, where he studied transportation, marketing and advertising.
Upon graduation, Wallace moved to New York City in pursuit of his childhood dream of being a comedian. At first, success in comedy proved elusive and Wallace worked as a salesman for an advertising agency to pay the bills.
Wallace's break came when one of his clients opened a comedy club. The club owner was amused by Wallace's natural humor and friendly demeanor and offered him the chance to perform stand-up comedy. In 1977, Wallace walked on stage for the first time, wearing a preacher's robe and calling himself The Right Reverend Dr. George Wallace. His routine was completely improvised.
George Wallace (born March 22, 1949 in Hempstead, New York) is an American poet and poetry promoter.
Working from a base of operations in downtown New York City's poetry scene, from his family roots in Brooklyn and Long Island, and from his experiences living and working in Northern California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oregon and the United Kingdom, Wallace has created a grassroots network of venues for poetry.
His own poetry, in particular his performance-oriented work, is imagination-based in its creation, emerging from a process of wordplay, surrealist deconstruction and bricolage into a final form that is typically characterized by accessible narrative and forceful rhythmic impetus. It is built on a foundation of a musical talent that emerged at the age of four, when he began reading and performing music, and shaped by his extensive readings in the literature of European Surrealism, the Whitman/Sandburg vortex, and the Beats. His work also bears the mark of 1960s concerns, particularly the social witness and aesthetic consciousness of that time.
George W. Wallace, jr. was born on May 30, 1938 to George Wallace and Elizabeth Yebade Wallace in Monrovia, Liberia. He was the foreign minister of Liberia from 2006 to 2007. He took office early in 2006, having been appointed to the cabinet of the incoming president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and confirmed by the Senate. Wallace has had a long career as a Liberian diplomat and ambassador through all of its governments during the past several decades. In a cabinet reshuffle on August 22, 2007, he was replaced as foreign minister by Olubanka King Akerele and became special adviser to President Johnson Sirleaf instead.
George Wallace admits to being jealous of Morgan Freeman, admonishes the people of Los Angeles and talks about bumping into Fetty Wap and Waka Flocka Flame. About The New Negroes with Baron Vaughn & Open Mike Eagle: The New Negroes with Baron Vaughn & Open Mike Eagle is a socially aware stand-up and music series. Transcript: "Today I have stood, where once Jefferson Davis stood, and took an oath to my people. It is very appropriate then that from this Cradle of the Confederacy, this very Heart of the Great Anglo-Saxon Southland, that today we sound the drum for freedom as have our generations of forebears before us done, time and time again through history. Let us rise to the call of freedom loving blood that is in us and send our answer to the tyranny that clanks its chains upon the South. In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny... and I say ... segregation today ... segregation tomorrow ... segregation forever."
