In 1361 the Swedish peasants on the island of Gotland faced an army of professional Danish and German mercenaries. The Gotlanders, badly equipped with old fashioned armour and weaponry, were ultimately pushed back to the walled city of Visby. But, for reasons unknown, the merchants inside Visby never opened their gate to let them in. Fathers, sons and brothers, young boys and old folk, valiantly fought to the last man outside the walls.
In the early 20th century, one of the most important finds in medieval archeology was discovered. Several massgraves from the battle outside of Visby. The graves are unique, because the victims were buried fully dressed in their armour.
The story of Valdemar Atterdag and his struggle to reclaim lands and power lost by his father, King Christian with culminating Battle of Visby in 1361.

Visby is a city of both roses and ruins and capital of the Baltic island of Gotland in south east Sweden. It is one of the most important Hanse towns with a well conserved mediaeval cityscape. Since 1270, and for a hundred and fifty years, construction of a long mediaeval wall, up to ten metres high, was undertaken around the historic city centre. However, the residents of the city did not want to protect themselves from enemies from abroad, but the attacks of farmers on the island, to whom access to the city was prohibited. The mainly German Hanse merchants were very wealthy and did not wish to share their good fortune with anyone else.Construction continued unabated and a modern city of the Middle Ages was created with more, and higher, stone buildings than anywhere else in Sweden. In the little square with its old town hall, decisions of the council were formerly proclaimed… and the building of Gamla Apoteket shines out in all of its mediaeval splendour. The prevailing townscape is due to a law of the nineteenth century: for the restoration and preservation of the mediaeval buildings, property owners were exempted from paying tax. Visby was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and is undoubtedly a priceless gem of the Middle Ages.

Visby is a flexible surface combatant, designed for a wide range of roles: Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Mine Counter-Measures (MCM), patrol and much more.
Gone are the days when the mere firepower of a ship was sufficient for its own protection. The concept today is action before - or even without - being detected.
Genuine Holistic Stealth
The Visby Class Corvette is the first vessel in the world to have fully developed stealth technology, combined with high operational versatility. The outstanding stealth properties fundamentally change the ship's survivability and improve its mission effectiveness. Visby represents "Stealth All The Way".
Hull design - Attention to every detail
The hull is designed on stealth principles with large flat angled surfaces. Every feature that need not necessarily be located outside the hull has been built in or concealed under specially designed hatches. The gas turbine exhausts have been concealed in hidden outlets close to the water surface at the stern of the vessel.
The vessel is built of sandwich-construction Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). The material provides high strength and rigidity, low weight, good shock resistance, low radar signature and low magnetic signature.
The material dramatically reduces the structural weight (typically 50% of a conventional steel hull). This results in a higher payload carrying capability, higher speed or longer range.
Propulsion - fast and silent
The Visby is equipped with a COmbined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine arrangement for high speeds and two diesel engines for low-speed. The engines are connected to two gearboxes, driving two waterjet propulsors. The engines provide a maximum speed of 15 knots (28 km/h) for long duration and 35 knots (65 km/h) for short duration. Visby
Visby [ˈviːspʏ] is a locality and the seat of Gotland Municipality in Gotland County, Sweden with 23,576 inhabitants, as of 2012. Visby is also the episcopal see for the Diocese of Visby. It is the only locality with historical city status on the island of Gotland. The Hanseatic city of Visby is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and since 1995, it is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Among the most notable historical remains are the 3.4 km (2.1 mi) long town wall that encircles the town center, and a number of church ruins.
Visby is a popular vacation destination for Scandinavians during the summer and receives thousands of tourists every year. It is by far the most populated locality outside the Swedish mainland. Visby is also the only municipality seat of Sweden that is accessible only by boat and air traffic. The University of Gotland is in Visby, and since 1 July 2013, it is a department of Uppsala University under the name Uppsala university–Campus Gotland.

Travel video about destination Visby in Sweden.
Visby is a city of both roses and ruins and capital of the Baltic island of Gotland in south east Sweden. It is one of the most important Hanse towns with a well conserved mediaeval cityscape. Since 1270, and for a hundred and fifty years, construction of a long mediaeval wall, up to ten metres high, was undertaken around the historic city centre. However, the residents of the city did not want to protect themselves from enemies from abroad, but the attacks of farmers on the island, to whom access to the city was prohibited. The mainly German Hanse merchants were very wealthy and did not wish to share their good fortune with anyone else.Construction continued unabated and a modern city of the Middle Ages was created with more, and higher, stone buildings than anywhere else in Sweden. In the little square with its old town hall, decisions of the council were formerly proclaimed… and the building of Gamla Apoteket shines out in all of its mediaeval splendour. The prevailing townscape is due to a law of the nineteenth century: for the restoration and preservation of the mediaeval buildings, property owners were exempted from paying tax. Visby was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and is undoubtedly a priceless gem of the Middle Ages.

Visby is a flexible surface combatant, designed for a wide range of roles: Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Mine Counter-Measures (MCM), patrol and much more.
Gone are the days when the mere firepower of a ship was sufficient for its own protection. The concept today is action before - or even without - being detected.
Genuine Holistic Stealth
The Visby Class Corvette is the first vessel in the world to have fully developed stealth technology, combined with high operational versatility. The outstanding stealth properties fundamentally change the ship's survivability and improve its mission effectiveness. Visby represents "Stealth All The Way".
Hull design - Attention to every detail
The hull is designed on stealth principles with large flat angled surfaces. Every feature that need not necessarily be located outside the hull has been built in or concealed under specially designed hatches. The gas turbine exhausts have been concealed in hidden outlets close to the water surface at the stern of the vessel.
The vessel is built of sandwich-construction Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). The material provides high strength and rigidity, low weight, good shock resistance, low radar signature and low magnetic signature.
The material dramatically reduces the structural weight (typically 50% of a conventional steel hull). This results in a higher payload carrying capability, higher speed or longer range.
Propulsion - fast and silent
The Visby is equipped with a COmbined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine arrangement for high speeds and two diesel engines for low-speed. The engines are connected to two gearboxes, driving two waterjet propulsors. The engines provide a maximum speed of 15 knots (28 km/h) for long duration and 35 knots (65 km/h) for short duration.
