Histoire de la Collection → Après avoir consacré plusieurs années de recherches à cet antique instrument, les luthiers de l'Atelier Skald voient en 2014 leurs travaux sur la Lyre gauloise salués par la région.
Par la suite, sont commander pour l'école de musique et de danse du Kreiz Breizh. des lyres gauloises -contemporaine- pour une pratique d'aujourd'hui destinées à l'enseignement.
Pionnière et avant-gardiste, cette école de centre Bretagne ouvrira en septembre 2015 la première classe Lyre officielle au sein de son département traditionnel et dont l'Atelier Skald a eu l'honneur de se voir confier l'enseignement.
Afin de nourrir cette démarche des temps modernes, c'est à partir d'une solide étude comparative et de ses travaux de reconstitution que l'Atelier Skald créé la collection Elementary, mêlant le fruit de 5 années de recherches au savoir-faire de notre temps et développe une collection épurée dédiée au FEU, à l'EAU et à la TERRE destinée aux Bardes des temps modernes!

The "lyre of Har Megiddo" is an instrument etched onto an ivory plaque that was discovered by archaeologist Gordon Loud in the excavations of a royal palace in the ancient city of Megiddo (aka Armageddon) in Israel. One of the interesting things about this image, which appears at the beginning of this video, is that it dates from roughly the time of the biblical King David (slightly before 1000 B.C.) and if David played a harp, as the Tanach (Old Testament) says he did, it was almost certainly an instrument of this sort.
David's instrument, which was called a "kinnor" in ancient Hebrew, had ten strings, and we know that he played it "with his hand" (as opposed to using a plectrum or pick for strumming - 1 Samuel 13:9). Being curious as to what this instrument might have sounded like, I built a replica of it, and that is what I am playing in this video. It is tuned to an F harmonic minor scale, and strung with pure silk. Harps and lyres in ancient time were strung with gut but silk, when it is properly prepared, is equally hard, strong and resonant.
Was this the sound that lulled troubled King Saul to sleep? We cannot know for sure, but it is possible. If you are curious about this instrument, here is a page on my website that explains a little about its construction and history.

This video shows Corwen Broch playing his reconstruction of the lyre found recently at Trossingen in Germany. The lyre in the video has six nylgut strings (gut can be substituted on request), a body carved from oak and a maple soundboard for extra volume. The original Trossingen lyre was entirely maple and this is how we now make our reconstructions (the lyre in the video was our prototype).Unlike Anglo-Saxon lyres the Germanic lyres have a one piece body without a separate yoke.

First approach of Yerko Lorca as lyre player in Athens.
The song is an improvization after tuning it and discover the sound of this ancient greek instrument in the luthier laboratory Nikolaos Brass, Herakles and Socrates.
The lyre in that video is made of wood, with the shape of a turtle's shell. It has a skin covering the soundbox, a wooden mast and 8 strings.

I tuned the lyre by ear, so some notes are off. Only downside I can think of (right now) is that the strings do not resonate sufficiently because it lacks a soundboard.

Lyre
The lyre (Greek: λύρα, lýra) is a string instrument known for its use in Greek classical antiquity and later periods. The lyre is similar in appearance to a small harp but with distinct differences. The word comes via Latin from the Greek; the earliest reference to the word is the Mycenaean Greek ru-ra-ta-e, meaning "lyrists" and written in the Linear B script. The lyres of Ur, excavated in ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), date to 2500 BC. The earliest picture of a lyre with seven strings appears in the famous sarcophagus of Hagia Triada (a Minoan settlement in Crete). The sarcophagus was used during the Mycenaean occupation of Crete (1400 BC). The recitations of the Ancient Greeks were accompanied by lyre playing.
The lyre of classical antiquity was ordinarily played by being strummed with a plectrum (pick), like a guitar or a zither, rather than being plucked with the fingers as with a harp. The fingers of the free hand silenced the unwanted strings in the chord. However, later lyres were played with a bow, including in Europe and parts of the Middle East.

The Chainsmokers
The Chainsmokers are an American DJ duo consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. Their 2014 single "#Selfie" reached No. 16 on the US charts and No. 11 on the UK charts while their 2015 single "Roses" reached No. 6 on the US charts.
Career
The Chainsmokers were formed as an EDM DJ duo in 2012 under the management of Adam Alpert in New York City. They started out by making remixes of indie bands. In 2012, they collaborated with Indian actress and recording artist Priyanka Chopra on the single "Erase" which was followed by "The Rookie" in early 2013. Their single "#Selfie", released for free in December 2013, was picked up by Dim Mak Records who re-released it in January 2014 and eventually streamed it to Republic Records. On August 5, 2014, The Chainsmokers released "Kanye" featuring sirenXX, the follow up to "#Selfie". On March 3, 2015, they released "Let You Go", featuring Great Good Fine Ok.
They signed with their manager Adam Alpert's joint venture label with Sony Music Entertainment, Disruptor Records, in April 2015. On October 23, 2015, The Chainsmokers released their first EP titled Bouquet, featuring "New York City", "Until You Were Gone", "Waterbed", "Good Intentions", and "Roses". The duo are to release their debut album sometime in 2016. The first single from their debut album, "Don't Let Me Down" was released on February 5, 2016. It features singer Daya.

"I'll Go" is a song by American neo soul/R&B singer Rahsaan Patterson. The song was co-written, co-produced by Patterson and Steve Hurley, never officially released on any Patterson albums. R&B singer Donell Jones recorded his cover of the tune that's on the soundtrack album, Love & Basketball released in April 2000.
Patterson's version is featured on SoulTogetherness2001 a compilation album featuring various artists (including Al Green, The Spinners and Reggie Calloway), released under Expansion Records.

Histoire de la Collection → Après avoir consacré plusieurs années de recherches à cet antique instrument, les luthiers de l'Atelier Skald voient en 2014 leurs travaux sur la Lyre gauloise salués par la région.
Par la suite, sont commander pour l'école de musique et de danse du Kreiz Breizh. des lyres gauloises -contemporaine- pour une pratique d'aujourd'hui destinées à l'enseignement.
Pionnière et avant-gardiste, cette école de centre Bretagne ouvrira en septembre 2015 la première classe Lyre officielle au sein de son département traditionnel et dont l'Atelier Skald a eu l'honneur de se voir confier l'enseignement.
Afin de nourrir cette démarche des temps modernes, c'est à partir d'une solide étude comparative et de ses travaux de reconstitution que l'Atelier Skald créé la collection Elementary, mêlant le fruit de 5 années de recherches au savoir-faire de notre temps et développe une collection épurée dédiée au FEU, à l'EAU et à la TERRE destinée aux Bardes des temps modernes!

The "lyre of Har Megiddo" is an instrument etched onto an ivory plaque that was discovered by archaeologist Gordon Loud in the excavations of a royal palace in the ancient city of Megiddo (aka Armageddon) in Israel. One of the interesting things about this image, which appears at the beginning of this video, is that it dates from roughly the time of the biblical King David (slightly before 1000 B.C.) and if David played a harp, as the Tanach (Old Testament) says he did, it was almost certainly an instrument of this sort.
David's instrument, which was called a "kinnor" in ancient Hebrew, had ten strings, and we know that he played it "with his hand" (as opposed to using a plectrum or pick for strumming - 1 Samuel 13:9). Being curious as to what this instrument might have sounded like, I built a replica of it, and that is what I am playing in this video. It is tuned to an F harmonic minor scale, and strung with pure silk. Harps and lyres in ancient time were strung with gut but silk, when it is properly prepared, is equally hard, strong and resonant.
Was this the sound that lulled troubled King Saul to sleep? We cannot know for sure, but it is possible. If you are curious about this instrument, here is a page on my website that explains a little about its construction and history.

This video shows Corwen Broch playing his reconstruction of the lyre found recently at Trossingen in Germany. The lyre in the video has six nylgut strings (gut can be substituted on request), a body carved from oak and a maple soundboard for extra volume. The original Trossingen lyre was entirely maple and this is how we now make our reconstructions (the lyre in the video was our prototype).Unlike Anglo-Saxon lyres the Germanic lyres have a one piece body without a separate yoke.
