It all began with the blues.
Ask any musician based in the tradition of american popular music: no blues, no jazz.
That Carmen Gomes inc. would take on the challenge of reinterpreting Harry Belafonte “Sings the Blues” was originally suggested by Harry van Dalen, owner of the eminent High End audio shop Rhapsody.
He thought that Carmen’s band would be perfect for reinterpreting the mood and the sound of the classic album.
Carmen immediately loved the idea.
‘’Harry Belafonte sings the Blues’’ was one of her favorite albums when she as a kid spent countless hours listening to music and making cassette tape compilations from her parents vast LP collection.
‘’I had a 60 minutes tape that I made consisting of my favorite songs from the Sings the Blues albums of Harry Belafonte, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Memphis Slim, don't forget Memphis Slim!, and with Muddy Water’s’ ‘’Mannish Boy’’ filling out the last 3 minutes. The tape eventually broke and got eaten by the machine, that´s how much I played it!’’ Carmen recalls.
So when confronted with the task of making the arrangements of the songs for ‘’Carmen Gomes sings the Blues’’, I first recreated Carmen’s 60 minute tape for inspiration. Since my recreation was in the digital domain, it was not possible to wear out the tape, but I did listen to it extensively. It became clear to me that in order to capture the spirit of those blues albums, I would have to keep the arrangements as simple as possible in order to give the musicians the opportunity to play straight from the heart.
Some songs were kept close to the original arrangement, while a song like the ‘’Way That I Feel’’, was completely re-harmonized. Others like ‘’Hallelujah I Just Love Her So’’ had the form extended in order to create more space.
Muddy waters’ Mannish Boy, while not being on the album is paraphrased in the introduction to God bless the Child and Losing Hand.
The 11 songs were recorded live in the studio in front of a studio audience.
When an audience is present, a synergy occurs.The audience becomes part of the music making and help spur the musicians on to greater heights. And it was a great audience that afternoon, all ears and smiles, the whole band truly enjoyed playing for them.
Harry van Dalen called the result breathtaking.
And head engineer Frans de Rond was happy as well, he didn’t need to repair a single note.

my name is Anton. the reason why i made this video is quite simple - some time ago when i started learning about tape recording, i discovered that there is not so much videos, where you can hear tape recordings transferred to digital signal via a professional audio interface. most of the existing videos are popular songs recorded on tape and played through the internal speaker of the tape recorder.
so i have a nagra 4.2 and i recorded some audio for you to show the raw difference between direct digital recording and recording on tape. i'm not a technical nerd, so all info we have to know is - my audio interface is RME 802 and i have Takemine acoustic guitar from the early 90s. Audio recorded to Cubase 8.
Let's start with a general comment about the tape sound. in my humble opinion, there are 4 factors that affect the sound while recording on tape. tape itself, filter settings on nagra (we'll keep it it flat, no hi pass filters for this record), limiter (for this recording i avoid circuit with limiter and go with normal recording) and last but not least - recording speed. there is 3 options on nagra 4.2 , i'll use them all but since we'll do some kind of a comparison between digital and tape, the main recording speed will be 15 inches per seconds, highest possible on 4.2.
one more thing about my particular Nagra (for those who want to buy the same model), i customized it a bit. the original line input and output connectors were banana jacks. for me, it's a very uncomfortable connector and i changed them. Since i'm a musician and never use it as a sync audio recorder with cameras - i don't need sync connectors, so i put an xlr-connector for line output and a typical 1/4 jack to line input.

here i take apart a rechargeable battery pack for the Nagra IV (6) digital recorder to find replaceable Lithium ion's inside.
"I am not making a personal attack on Nagra as I have worked with their products for over 20 years and find them to be of the highest quality, my only complaint is the difficulty of finding Just the battery cell pack so I can replace them myself."
I think Its an expensive waste to purchase the box and circuit everytime a battery fails especially as the cell pack simply unplugs. After making this video I have now been informed that the separate battery pack is available though I could not find this option before the whole block with electronics was ordered else I would not have made this video. I understand that these batteries have to pass many quality checks and special circuitry is required as Li-ion batteries can be quite dangerous if not used or charged correctly. It is therefore not wise to replace these yourself unless you seek the correct replacement parts that were designed for this specific item. If something goes wrong then you are risking the possible damage of your Nagra recorder.

Nagra
Nagra is a series of mostly battery-operated portable professional audio recorders produced by Kudelski SA, based in Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland.
History
The machines were initially designed by Polish inventor Stefan Kudelski, and his company won numerous technical awards for their precision and reliability. Nagra means "[it] will record" in Polish, Kudelski's mother language.
Nagra-brand tape recorders were the de facto standard sound recording systems for motion picture and (non-video) single-camera television production from the 1960s until the 1990s.

Whats inside A Nagra lithium battery power pack MF#70
here i take apart a rechargeable battery pack for the Nagra IV (6) digital recorder to find replaceable Lithium ion's inside. "I am not making a personal attack on Nagra as I have worked with their products for over 20 years and find them to be of the highest quality, my only complaint is the difficulty of finding Just the battery cell pack so I can replace them myself." I think Its an expensive waste to purchase the box and circuit everytime a battery fails especially as the cell pack simply unplugs. After making this video I have now been informed that the separate battery pack is available though I could not find this option before the whole block with electronics was ordered else I would not have made this video. I understand that these batteries have to pass many quality checks and s...

It all began with the blues.
Ask any musician based in the tradition of american popular music: no blues, no jazz.
That Carmen Gomes inc. would take on the challenge of reinterpreting Harry Belafonte “Sings the Blues” was originally suggested by Harry van Dalen, owner of the eminent High End audio shop Rhapsody.
He thought that Carmen’s band would be perfect for reinterpreting the mood and the sound of the classic album.
Carmen immediately loved the idea.
‘’Harry Belafonte sings the Blues’’ was one of her favorite albums when she as a kid spent countless hours listening to music and making cassette tape compilations from her parents vast LP collection.
‘’I had a 60 minutes tape that I made consisting of my favorite songs from the Sings the Blues albums of Harry Belafonte, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Memphis Slim, don't forget Memphis Slim!, and with Muddy Water’s’ ‘’Mannish Boy’’ filling out the last 3 minutes. The tape eventually broke and got eaten by the machine, that´s how much I played it!’’ Carmen recalls.
So when confronted with the task of making the arrangements of the songs for ‘’Carmen Gomes sings the Blues’’, I first recreated Carmen’s 60 minute tape for inspiration. Since my recreation was in the digital domain, it was not possible to wear out the tape, but I did listen to it extensively. It became clear to me that in order to capture the spirit of those blues albums, I would have to keep the arrangements as simple as possible in order to give the musicians the opportunity to play straight from the heart.
Some songs were kept close to the original arrangement, while a song like the ‘’Way That I Feel’’, was completely re-harmonized. Others like ‘’Hallelujah I Just Love Her So’’ had the form extended in order to create more space.
Muddy waters’ Mannish Boy, while not being on the album is paraphrased in the introduction to God bless the Child and Losing Hand.
The 11 songs were recorded live in the studio in front of a studio audience.
When an audience is present, a synergy occurs.The audience becomes part of the music making and help spur the musicians on to greater heights. And it was a great audience that afternoon, all ears and smiles, the whole band truly enjoyed playing for them.
Harry van Dalen called the result breathtaking.
And head engineer Frans de Rond was happy as well, he didn’t need to repair a single note.

so i have a nagra 4.2 and i recorded some audio for you to show the raw difference between direct digital recording and recording on tape. i'm not a technical nerd, so all info we have to know is - my audio interface is RME 802 and i have Takemine acoustic guitar from the early 90s. Audio recorded to Cubase 8.
Let's start with a general comment about the tape sound. in my humble opinion, there are 4 factors that affect the sound while recording on tape. tape itself, filter settings on nagra (we'll keep it it flat, no hi pass filters for this record), limiter (for this recording i avoid circuit with limiter and go with normal recording) and last but not least - recording speed. there is 3 options on nagra 4.2 , i'll use them all but since we'll do some kind of a comparison between digital and tape, the main recording speed will be 15 inches per seconds, highest possible on 4.2.
one more thing about my particular Nagra (for those who want to buy the same model), i customized it a bit. the original line input and output connectors were banana jacks. for me, it's a very uncomfortable connector and i changed them. Since i'm a musician and never use it as a sync audio recorder with cameras - i don't need sync connectors, so i put an xlr-connector for line output and a typical 1/4 jack to line input.
