Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. Having said that, it's another of her ‘outrageous' female characterisations, if in a slightly lower-key to her previous ‘bodice-ripping' dramas of the period. Interestingly she looks entirely different when made up for old age in the latter part of the film.
The film includes a good cast of well established forties film actors. Cecil Parker was never matinée idol stuff, but there's always interest in his performances - here as ‘Copper John', the arrogant, self-absorbed owner of the Hungry Hill mine. Michael Denison, as his son Henry, has little to do and is gone to death before you've even realised he exists, but Dennis Price, as Parker's other son, ‘Greyhound John', has a sympathetic role for once and gains our sympathy for his lack of interest in all things to do with mining while he courts Lockwood - and finally marries her to produce several children - one of which, ‘Wild Johnnie' becomes a spoilt mother's-darling brat, and is well played by Dermot Walsh. Jean Simmons looks charming in ringlets for years as the brothers' sister, though she also disappears from the story too soon. There are several other familiar names in the cast including Siobhan McKenna, Guy Rolfe, Eddie Byrne (seen in "Jack the Ripper" (1959) also on this channel), and Peter Murray, who became the famous radio DJ. It is also the debut film for Eileen Herlie and Dan O'Herlihy, and some names in the supporting cast who are uncredited include Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia, at just four years old, Hazel Court and James Robertson Justice.
One ends up with the feeling that this film does not do justice to the long and rambling original novel, and had they spent a bit more money and filmed in colour it would have added considerably to the film as a whole, especially in the well-handled ballroom scenes where all the ladies appear to be wearing shades of white! The film was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, who also directed "Dangerous Moonlight", " Scrooge" "The Mark of Cain" and "Trottie True" (the last two are also on this channel), and the music was by John Greenwood who wrote scores for over forty movies from the 30s to the 50s, some of the more well-known might include "San Demetrio London", "The Last Days of Dolwyn", "Frieda" and "Broken Journey" (oh, dear! - another that's on my channel!!)

Cecil Parker
Cecil Schwabe (3 September 1897 – 20 April 1971) who performed under the stage name Cecil Parker was an English character and comedy actor with a distinctive husky voice and a supercilious demeanor, who usually played supporting roles in his 91 films made between 1928 and 1969.
Parker was born in Hastings, Sussex. He was educated at St Francis Xavier College, and at Bruges in Belgium. He served with the Royal Sussex Regiment in the First World War, reaching the rank of Sergeant He began his theatrical career in London in 1922, adopting the surname "Parker" from his mother's maiden name. He made his first film appearance in 1928 and subsequently became a familiar face in British, and occasionally American films, until his death. He appeared less often on television, but many of his films have remained popular and are often shown.
He acted in two adaptations of A.J. Cronin's novels, The Citadel (1938) and The Stars Look Down (1940), in addition to appearing in The Lady Vanishes (1938) and Under Capricorn (1949), both of the later films were directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Other roles were in 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956), Dangerous Moonlight (1941), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), and I Was Monty's Double (1958), as well as the comedies A French Mistress (1960), The Ladykillers (1955), The Man in the White Suit (1951), The Court Jester (1955) (in which he played an evil, usurping king of England), Indiscreet (1958), and I Believe in You (1952). Parker was also the original Charles Condomine in the West End production of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit, a role subsequently played on Broadway by Clifton Webb and in the 1945 film by Rex Harrison.

Michael Denison, as his son Henry, has little to do and is gone to death before you've even realised he exists, but Dennis Price, as Parker's other son, ‘Greyhound John', has a sympathetic role for once and gains our sympathy for his lack of interest in all things to do with mining while he courts Lockwood - and finally marries her to produce several children - one of which, ‘Wild Johnnie' becomes a spoilt mother's-darling brat, and is well played by Dermot Walsh. Jean Simmons looks charming in ringlets for years as the brothers' sister, though she also disappears from the story too soon. There are several other familiar names in the cast including Siobhan McKenna, Guy Rolfe, Eddie Byrne (seen in "Jack the Ripper" (1959) also on this channel), and Peter Murray, who became the famous radio DJ. It is also the debut film for Eileen Herlie and Dan O'Herlihy, and some names in the supporting cast who are uncredited include Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia, at just four years old, Hazel Court and James Robertson Justice.
One ends up with the feeling that this film does not do justice to the long and rambling original novel, and had they spent a bit more money and filmed in colour it would have added considerably to the film as a whole, especially in the well-handled ballroom scenes where all the ladies appear to be wearing shades of white! The film was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, who also directed "Dangerous Moonlight", " Scrooge" "The Mark of Cain" and "Trottie True" (the last two are also on this channel), and the music was by John Greenwood who wrote scores for over forty movies from the 30s to the 50s, some of the more well-known might include "San Demetrio London", "The Last Days of Dolwyn", "Frieda" and "Broken Journey" (oh, dear! - another that's on my channel!!)

Hungry Hill - 1947 - Margaret Lockwood, Dennis Price, Cecil Parker, Jean Simmons & Dermot Walsh
Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. This film from 1950 (which an d might be described as a comedy-drama - or perhaps a drama-comedy) hasn't been seen for many a year and although it's annoyingly out of focus all the way through, hopefully that won't spoil the fluffy, inconsequential but ultimately enjoyable movie directed by John Paddy Carstairs. Anne Crawford, an actress who died far too soon (1920–1956), has a leading role as the psychiatrist wife of general practitioner Cecil Parker (always good money's worth if not your actual handsome leading man), who's son draws naughty images on the surgery wall and the basis of this light-hearted film's enjoyment comes from the parent's two conflicting ideas on child-rearing. The differences of opinion flare up into a parting of the ways for the parents of Tony, who's horse-drawing...

2012 TORN Racing Helmet Cam: Round 3 - Callisburg (ft. Cecil Parker)
Here's my video from practice at the third round of the 2012 TORN series, with veteran off-road racer Cecil Parker coming in around the 4:50 mark. The track was pretty moist and very rutted on Saturday, but Curtis and crew worked very hard and made the track the best that it could be. I had an okay weekend, finishing fourth in Open Expert and third in Sportsman Expert.

Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. Having said that, it's another of her ‘outrageous' female characterisations, if in a slightly lower-key to her previous ‘bodice-ripping' dramas of the period. Interestingly she looks entirely different when made up for old age in the latter part of the film.
The film includes a good cast of well established forties film actors. Cecil Parker was never matinée idol stuff, but there's always interest in his performances - here as ‘Copper John', the arrogant, self-absorbed owner of the Hungry Hill mine. Michael Denison, as his son Henry, has little to do and is gone to death before you've even realised he exists, but Dennis Price, as Parker's other son, ‘Greyhound John', has a sympathetic role for once and gains our sympathy for his lack of interest in all things to do with mining while he courts Lockwood - and finally marries her to produce several children - one of which, ‘Wild Johnnie' becomes a spoilt mother's-darling brat, and is well played by Dermot Walsh. Jean Simmons looks charming in ringlets for years as the brothers' sister, though she also disappears from the story too soon. There are several other familiar names in the cast including Siobhan McKenna, Guy Rolfe, Eddie Byrne (seen in "Jack the Ripper" (1959) also on this channel), and Peter Murray, who became the famous radio DJ. It is also the debut film for Eileen Herlie and Dan O'Herlihy, and some names in the supporting cast who are uncredited include Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia, at just four years old, Hazel Court and James Robertson Justice.
One ends up with the feeling that this film does not do justice to the long and rambling original novel, and had they spent a bit more money and filmed in colour it would have added considerably to the film as a whole, especially in the well-handled ballroom scenes where all the ladies appear to be wearing shades of white! The film was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, who also directed "Dangerous Moonlight", " Scrooge" "The Mark of Cain" and "Trottie True" (the last two are also on this channel), and the music was by John Greenwood who wrote scores for over forty movies from the 30s to the 50s, some of the more well-known might include "San Demetrio London", "The Last Days of Dolwyn", "Frieda" and "Broken Journey" (oh, dear! - another that's on my channel!!)

This leads to an accidental trip to Dieppe by Tony's mother with her sister's (Barbara Murray) fiancée (Derek Bond) which of course, precipitate's all sorts of ‘French Farce' problems. All is suitably resolved by the end! There are nice performances all round, with lovely Dandy Nichols having a larger than usual role, but once again as a ‘servant'! Barbara Everest gives an unbelievably stagey performance as Crawford's thoroughly irritating, organising, domineering mother, making one wonder whether upper-middle-class life was ever really like this - a wonderful moment when she says "... Mother knows best..." - as if! An interesting sociological habit of the period is seen when Crawford puts a scarf over her head to protect her hair when taking off a dress - does that still happen? Mervyn Johns plays Crawford's father, and Edward Rigby is excellent as her Grandfather. The music is by little-known Bretton Byrd, who also composed music for Phyllis Calvert's "The Root of All Evil", Margaret Lockwood's "The White Unicorn" (1947) and "My Sister and I" (1948).

Here's my video from practice at the third round of the 2012 TORN series, with veteran off-road racer Cecil Parker coming in around the 4:50 mark. The track was pretty moist and very rutted on Saturday, but Curtis and crew worked very hard and made the track the best that it could be. I had an okay weekend, finishing fourth in Open Expert and third in Sportsman Expert.

Four villages of Anand district were inundated while around 100 villagers of 13 villages have been re-located to safer spots in the villages following discharge of 1.43 lakh cusecs water from the Dharoi dam into Sabarmati River.
