Luzmila Carpio

Luzmila Carpio is a Bolivian singer, who has performed in Spanish and Quechua, and former Bolivia's ambassador to France from 2006 to 2010.

Early life

As a small child, she learned the daily songs of the Quechua and Aymara indigenous peoples that inhabit the mountains and valleys of Northern Potosí in Bolivia.

Career

In her early teens she moved to Oruro, and started expressing herself through her songs. Once she went to a radio station and sang the national anthem of Bolivia, the only song in Spanish that she knew. Later on she was selected as the lead singer by a musical band that participated in a contest in Cochabamba. The popular songs she sang in this occasion were designed to meet the demands of the vast popular segments of the population, mostly descendants of indigenous peoples but who already lived in the cities and spoke Spanish. Afterwards, "Siway Azucena", a melody composed by her inspired by the music of Northern Potosí, spread throughout the country, the first truly indigenous song to have widespread popular success.

ZZK Records

ZZK Records is an electronic music record label based out of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The label grew out of an underground party in Buenos Aires called Zizek Club in 2006. Founders Grant C. Dull, Guillermo Canale and Diego Bulacio wanted to provide an outlet for new artists and producers who were combining the folk sounds of more traditional Latin-American music, notably cumbia, with hip-hop, reggaeton, dancehall, dubstep, and other electronic sounds.

In 2008, ZZK Records established itself as an independent label giving international recognition to the artists behind the new sounds of electronic cumbia with the release of ZZK Sound Vol. 1: Cumbia Digital.

Chancha Vìa Circuito

Pedro Canale, better known as his stage name Chancha Vía Circuito is a producer, DJ/remixer and composer, from Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fusion of electronic music and cumbia is key factor of Chancha Vìa Circuito's music. He explores the minimal side of digital cumbia with inspiration from Afro-dance, murgas, minimal dub, IDM, and downtempo. Computer bleeps share sonic space with folkloric chant. Candombe drums are accompanied by the sample of a machete splicing the air and a vocal line of indigenous bebop is layered over hints of dub.

Biography

Exploring various Latin American musical influences, including folklore music, reggae, cumbia sonidera, Colombian cumbia, Peruvian cumbia and cumbia villera, Chancha Vìa Circuito has been producing instrumental musics fusing electronic music with acoustic instruments and voices since 2005.

Since 2010 Chancha Vìa Circuito is one of favorate artists of NPR's Alt.Latino.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires (/ˈbweɪnəs ˈɛəriːz/ or /ˈaɪrɪs/,Spanish: [ˈbwenos ˈaiɾes]) is the capital and largest city of Argentina, and the second-largest metropolitan area in South America. It is located on the western shore of the estuary of the Río de la Plata, on the continent's southeastern coast. The Greater Buenos Aires conurbation, which also includes several Buenos Aires Province districts, constitutes the third-largest conurbation in Latin America, with a population of around fifteen and a half million.

The city of Buenos Aires is neither part of Buenos Aires Province nor the Province's capital; rather, it is an autonomous district. In 1880, after decades of political infighting, Buenos Aires was federalized and removed from Buenos Aires Province. The city limits were enlarged to include the towns of Belgrano and Flores; both are now neighborhoods of the city. The 1994 constitutional amendment granted the city autonomy, hence its formal name: Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (Autonomous City of Buenos Aires). Its citizens first elected a chief of government (i.e. mayor) in 1996; before, the mayor was directly appointed by the President of the Republic.
