During 2017, an international program called One Hundred Days of Learning arranged 100 learning experiences in different places around the world.
This formed part of the Age of Wonderland program developed for Dutch Design Week, held in Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
Workspace was fortunate to be part of this event and on the 22nd of July hosted a group of young people from different communities within Hout bay to take part in a day of learning.
The event took the form of a card game, aptly called “The Bridge”. The game, developed by Workspace founder Craig Dunlop, seeks to address stereotyping and to stimulate dialogue between groups within diverse communities.
The Bridge is a simple card game where participants draw, decorate and annotate blank cards in response to provocative questions around cultural difference. The cards are then shuffled and used as a basis for storytelling. The game culminates in a final round where random groups are formed and play for food item rewards. A menu is then decided and the meal is communally cooked and shared.
The game came out of a need to provoke different cultural groups, who attend programs at Workspace, to interact with each other at a normal level without the interference of their cultural bias.

Dunlop Manufacturing
Dunlop Manufacturing, Inc. is a manufacturer of musical accessories, especially effects units, based in Benicia, California, United States. Founded in 1965 by Jim Dunlop, Sr., the company grew from a small home operation to a large manufacturer of music gear. Dunlop has acquired several well-known effects pedal brands, including Cry Baby, MXR and Way Huge.
Background and early history
Scottish immigrant Jim Dunlop founded the Jim Dunlop Company in 1965 as a part-time business while working as a processing and chemical engineer. His first product was the Vibra-Tuner, a small device that attached to a guitar with a suction cup and displayed whether the guitar was in tune with the vibration of a small reed. While visiting music stores to sell his new product, someone told him that musicians needed a good capo—remarking that anyone who made a good capo that could handle a 12-string guitar would make a lot of money.
Using his engineering background, Dunlop created the toggle capo, and then worked with a local machine shop to build his first capo dies—eventually manufacturing what is now the 1100 series capo. Starting from his living room, Dunlop later moved construction to his garage, and then to a location outside the house.

Mr. Ventresco exhibits his unique hybrid picking style as he seeks to reinterpret the vast archive of tunes he has heard on piano rolls and 78 records. A reviewer has said of Mr. Ventresco "...he may be one of the best ragtime pickers alive today. Ventresco's ability to perform rags by Big Bill Broonzy, Eubie Blake, and Scott Joplin is awe-inspiring. His dense arrangements sound impossibly difficult to play, but they are a sheer pleasure to hear. It may be sacrilegious to admit, but Ventresco's technical ability is right up there with Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake. The only things missing are the pops and hisses of the 78s." Up at our Benicia headquarters Craig came up and played for us, and out of the blue one of us requested the old tin pan alley song "That Ol' Gang Of Mine", not usually a part of Craig's set. Craig thought for a few seconds and then strummed this amazing on-the-spot arrangement out. Dunlop is grateful and proud to be able to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Tortex Picks and all the artists past, present, and future that have made the Tortex pick a part of their life, and in doing so have played an essential role in its storied legacy. During 2017, an international program called One Hundred Days of Learning arranged 100 learning experiences in different places around the world.
This formed part of the Age of Wonderland program developed for Dutch Design Week, held in Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
Workspace was fortunate to be part of this event and on the 22nd of July hosted a group of young people from different communities within Hout bay to take part in a day of learning.
The event took the form of a card game, aptly called “The Bridge”. The game, developed by Workspace founder Craig Dunlop, seeks to address stereotyping and to stimulate dialogue between groups within diverse communities.
The Bridge is a simple card game where participants draw, decorate and annotate blank cards in response to provocative questions around cultural difference. The cards are then shuffled and used as a basis for storytelling. The game culminates in a final round where random groups are formed and play for food item rewards. A menu is then decided and the meal is communally cooked and shared.
The game came out of a need to provoke different cultural groups, who attend programs at Workspace, to interact with each other at a normal level without the interference of their cultural bias.

Jim Dunlop presents a performance and miniature portrait of CRAIG VENTRESCO, a legendary San Franciscan street busker and concert hall guitar picker of obscure Ragtime, Turn-of-The-Century, and Pre-War Blues songs, as well as a devoted user of Tortex 1.0mm and 1.14mm picks.
Mr. Ventresco exhibits his unique hybrid picking style as he seeks to reinterpret the vast archive of tunes he has heard on piano rolls and 78 records. A reviewer has said of Mr. Ventresco
"...he may be one of the best ragtime pickers alive today. Ventresco's ability to perform rags by Big Bill Broonzy, Eubie Blake, and Scott Joplin is awe-inspiring. His dense arrangements sound impossibly difficult to play, but they are a sheer pleasure to hear. PG’s Chris Kies met with Tom Johnston, John McFee, and Patrick Simmons before their recent Nashville gig at the Ascend Amphitheater. Old-school mentality reigns with Doobie mainstays Johnston and Simmons using the same guitars for decades, but multi-instrumentalist McFee explains why he embraces the 21st-century technology.
Guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for Doobie hits like “China Grove,” “Long Train Runnin’,” and “Listen to the Music,” Johnston has been a tried-and-true PRS guy since he stumbled upon one in a San Rafael music store in the ’80s. His current No. 1 is a 2009 25th Anniversary Custom 24 that rides in standard tuning. And all his guitars are equipped with Greg Sfarzo strings gauged .009–.046 and he’s been loyal the Jim Dunlop Herco .50 mm picks since the ’70s.
Simmons main ride is this custom-built S-style constructed by his current tech and instructor at the Robero-Venn School of Luthiery, Joe Vallee. It has three active EMG pickups with an onboard mid boost that’s engaged most of the time and an old Washburn tremolo that he prefers because of how it stays in tune thanks to the rollers. For picking needs, Simmons takes a dobro thumbpick, cuts it in half (leaving just the main pick part), and marries it with a Dunlop Tortex, and then tapes it to his thumb with gaff tape.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Mother’s Day 2015, Slipknot guitarists Mick Thomson and Jim Root took some time before their somewhat hometown show and hung with PG to talk about signature guitars, tube heads, and the handful off effects they need to punish arenas each night.
Mick Thomson’s Gear
GUITARS
Mick Thomson is a creature of habit—give him a few of his Ibanez MTM signature guitars packed with his Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout pickups and he’s a happy dude. Each one of his guitars features a mahogany body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard.
As far as he’s concerned, the best guitar he has out on the road right now is his white-and-black “storm trooper” Ibanez MTM that’s kept tuned to dropped-B. According to Thomson, it’s perfect for rhythm work and can stand up against any other 6-string in his collection for leads. Nearly all of 2008’s 'All Hope is Gone' and the bulk of the rhythm material for last year’s '.5: The Gray Chapter' was done with the storm trooper. For this run, the band is primarily using two tunings and he uses a different set of D’Addario EXL117 strings for each one. For dropped-A tunings, he goes with .011–.058 and for dropped-B tunings he goes with .012–.068. Thomson recently worked with Dunlop to create a custom Jazz III pick made of a graphite composite because he feels they’re slicker, harder, and doesn’t make any scraping or scratching sounds when they wear down.
#7’s backup to the storm trooper is the very first prototype he got for his signature line back in the early 2000s.
Thomson starts the night out with this Oakland Raiders-themed Ibanez MTM that’s tuned to dropped-A for “Sacrastrophe.”
Thomson’s newest signature model features a carbon-fiber cap on the body and headstock and is tuned to dropped-A.
All of Thomson’s Audio-Technica wireless packs on his guitars are protected by Trojan condoms to keep them from getting wet from water, beer, sweat, and blood.

He begins the painting demonstration with an earlier painting of a forest scene that is already dry. He adds a darker glaze to the entire painting, enhances its composition, and finds a new, more dramatic and mysterious painting through layers of glaze.

Schon’s well-documented history of guitars includes a plethora of Gibsons and Kramers, but his current #1 is a NS-15 Neal Schon Signature Model from PRS (he also carries a few NS-14s on the road as well).
Every aspect of the design had Schon’s fingerprints on it and it went through many incarnations before finally settling into the current specs. The NS-15 is strung up with a set of .009-.042 D’Addario strings (he ups the 6th string to .046 for dropped tunings).
Most of Schon’s guitars feature a Fernandes Sustainer as well as a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 pickup in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. He uses medium Dunlop celluloid picks, although recently he’s been using his fingertips more during solos—which he explains has opened up different tones.
Even though Schon has a guitar boat loaded with PRS guitars, his go-to on “Lights” is a relic’d Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster. The bridge pickup and headstock is reversed and the relic job is straight from the custom shop.
