Ash King

Ash King (born Ashutosh Ganguly Bengali: আশুতোষ গাঙ্গুলী)is a singer of Bengali origin based in London. He made his playback singing debut in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi-6.

Personal life

Ash King hails from a family of musicians who have shaped his relationship with music. His grandfather was the first Indian classical music teacher at Nobel prize for literature winner Rabindranath Tagore's home and school Shantiniketan, and also a prominent freedom fighter for India. King spent his childhood surrounded by celebrated musical artists with whom his father worked closely with.Music has always run in his family. His father used to perform with Ravi Shankar in India back in the sixties. He recalls that when he was very young, George Harrison visited their house at Wembley as he was into Indian classical music.

Influenced early on by joining a Gospel choir and listening to soul artistes such as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Al Green and Luther Vandross, King’s style and flavour deliver a sound that is easy on the ear and alluring even for those who aren’t drawn by his specialised genre. However, you would be mistaken to think King’s talents lie in just the one genre.

Shashaa Tirupati

Shashaa Tirupati (often misspelt as Tripathi, born December 21, 1987) is a multilingual playback singer, songwriter and voice over artist of Indo-Canadian origin, with family roots in Kashmir, predominantly active in the Bollywood and Tamizh music industries. She was noticed by Academy Award Winner AR Rahman after she had auditioned for his episode of Coke Studio Season 3 and went on to be a part of his Hindustani Choir for the show. She sang her first solo song "Vaada Vaada" for Rahman from the Rajnikanth, Deepika Padukone starrer, 'Kochadaiiyaan'. It is, however, with her second song, "Aye Mr. Minor" for Rahman, from the film 'Kaaviyathalaivan', that she gained sudden popularity in the Tamil music industry. She was nominated for the Big Music Awards and the IIFA 2015 and won the Mirchi Music Award as Best Upcoming Female Singer for the song "Aye Mr. Minor". Her recent song, "Silikku Marame" composed by music director D. Imman, was a massive hit.

Shashaa has sung for three tracks in the 2015 Mani Ratnam - AR Rahman film OK Kanmani, namely Kaara Attaakaara, Parandhu Sella Vaa, and Naane Varugiraen (and three in the Telugu version OK Bangaram: Raara Aatagaada, Maayedho Cheyyava, and Yedho Adaganaa) starring Nithya Menen and Dulquer Salmaan. She performed in the AR Rahman: Greatest Hits Concert at the O2 Arena, London, August 15, 2015 and the NH7 Weekender Music Festival by Bacardi as part of Rahman's entourage. She won the Best Female Singer Award for "Naane Varugiren" at the Vikatan Awards 2015.

Music

Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."

Half Girlfriend

Half Girlfriend is an Indian English coming of age, young adult romance novel by Indian author Chetan Bhagat. The novel, set in rural Bihar, New Delhi, Patna, and New York, is the story of a Bihari Boy in quest of winning over the girl he loves. This is Bhagat's sixth novel which was released on 1 October 2014 by Rupa Publications. The novel has also been published in Hindi and Gujarati versions as well. A Bollywood film adaptation is planned.

Dedicated to "non English-types", the book divulges the sentiments and linguistic struggles of a backward rural Bhojpuri-laced Hindi speaking boy from Bihar as he enrolls himself at the prestigious English-medium St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, and falls in love with a "high class English speaking rich Delhi girl". The girl does not admit the relationship but agrees to be his "half girlfriend". Chetan Bhagat commented, "Half-Girlfriend, to me, is a unique Indian phenomenon, where boys and girls are not clear about their relationship status with each other. A boy may think he is more than friends with the girl, but the girl is still not his girlfriend. Hence, I thought we needed a term like 'Half girlfriend'. Because, in India, that is what most men get."
