Is the mind computable? Can we build sentient machines? What are the implications for humanity if we can?
The human race may be singular, unique across all of time and space. It may be just one of multitudes. Most likely, however, it is an extremely rare thing, an exquisitely precious consequence of the unfolding of the laws of the universe. Still, one truth that we can assert with confidence is that we are. We are self-aware; we know that we know we exist. There is within humanity a drive to recreate itself, to be as a god to things we create in our own image. From the Golem of Jewish mythology, to Leonardo's robot, to the contemporary Kenshiro robot, we project our hopes and our fears into cunning mechanism that mirror us. While these anthropomorphic robots are interesting (and perhaps a bit creepy), there is a less visible revolution taking place in cognitive computing, whose advances are not only helping us better understand the operation of the human brain, they are leading us to create the illusion of sentience.
In this lecture, IBM Fellow Grady Booch explores the development of intelligent computers as projections of what we both dream and what we fear. We examine what it means to be intelligent, and take a journey through past and future approaches to building sentient software-intensive systems. Some such as Minsky believe the mind to be computable; others such as Penrose do not. In the end, we are compelled to consider the question of what it means to be human: producing even the illusion of the mind raises profound questions as to their personhood and our relationship to these machines.
This lecture is the second in a series for Computing: The Human Experience, a transmedia project directed to the general public that explores the co-evolution of computing and humanity. Presented by IBM Fellow Grady Booch, Computing teaches the essential science of computing, presents the stories of the people, events, and inventions of computing, examines the connection among computing, science, and society, and contemplates the future. Computing has played a fundamental role in the advancement of the human spirit, encompassing war, commerce, the arts, science, society, and faith and so this series takes us on a journey that examines the complex dance between computing and the human experience.

Ed Grady
Edward Louis "Ed" Grady (August 31, 1923 – December 10, 2012) was an American stage, film and television actor and teacher. His film credits included A Simple Twist of Fate in 1994, Lolita in 1997, and The Notebook in 2004. His television roles included the 1993 television miniseries, Alex Haley's Queen; the 1993 Hallmark Hall of Fame television movie, To Dance with the White Dog, as well as a string of series, including In the Heat of the Night, I'll Fly Away, Matlock, and Dawson's Creek, in which he had a recurring role as Gramps Ryan.
Grady's theater roles included three seasons at Unto These Hills, an outdoor Cherokee historical drama staged in Cherokee, North Carolina. Grady portrayed Drowning Bear in the play, which follows the story of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Grady was born to Eddie Jones Grady and Maude Clara (née Hodges) Grady on August 31, 1923, in Kinston, North Carolina. He graduated from Grainger High School in Kinston. Grady enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II and trained as a cryptographer. He served on Ie Shima (Iejima) during the war, and was awarded the Soldier's Medal for rescuing the pilot of a P-47 which was on fire.

Is the mind computable? Can we build sentient machines? What are the implications for humanity if we can?
The human race may be singular, unique across all of time and space. It may be just one of multitudes. Most likely, however, it is an extremely rare thing, an exquisitely precious consequence of the unfolding of the laws of the universe. Still, one truth that we can assert with confidence is that we are. We are self-aware; we know that we know we exist. There is within humanity a drive to recreate itself, to be as a god to things we create in our own image. From the Golem of Jewish mythology, to Leonardo's robot, to the contemporary Kenshiro robot, we project our hopes and our fears into cunning mechanism that mirror us. While these anthropomorphic robots are interesting (and perhaps a bit creepy), there is a less visible revolution taking place in cognitive computing, whose advances are not only helping us better understand the operation of the human brain, they are leading us to create the illusion of sentience.
In this lecture, IBM Fellow Grady Booch explores the development of intelligent computers as projections of what we both dream and what we fear. We examine what it means to be intelligent, and take a journey through past and future approaches to building sentient software-intensive systems. Some such as Minsky believe the mind to be computable; others such as Penrose do not. In the end, we are compelled to consider the question of what it means to be human: producing even the illusion of the mind raises profound questions as to their personhood and our relationship to these machines.
This lecture is the second in a series for Computing: The Human Experience, a transmedia project directed to the general public that explores the co-evolution of computing and humanity. Presented by IBM Fellow Grady Booch, Computing teaches the essential science of computing, presents the stories of the people, events, and inventions of computing, examines the connection among computing, science, and society, and contemplates the future. Computational intelligence is the manifest destiny of computer science.

Is the mind computable? Can we build sentient machines? What are the implications for humanity if we can?
The human race may be singular, unique across all of time and space. It may be just one of multitudes. Most likely, however, it is an extremely rare thing, an exquisitely precious consequence of the unfolding of the laws of the universe. Still, one truth that we can assert with confidence is that we are. We are self-aware; we know that we know we exist. There is within humanity a drive to recreate itself, to be as a god to things we create in our own image. From the Golem of Jewish mythology, to Leonardo's robot, to the contemporary Kenshiro robot, we project our hopes and our fears into cunning mechanism that mirror us. While these anthropomorphic robots are interesting (and perhaps a bit creepy), there is a less visible revolution taking place in cognitive computing, whose advances are not only helping us better understand the operation of the human brain, they are leading us to create the illusion of sentience.
In this lecture, IBM Fellow Grady Booch explores the development of intelligent computers as projections of what we both dream and what we fear. We examine what it means to be intelligent, and take a journey through past and future approaches to building sentient software-intensive systems. Some such as Minsky believe the mind to be computable; others such as Penrose do not. In the end, we are compelled to consider the question of what it means to be human: producing even the illusion of the mind raises profound questions as to their personhood and our relationship to these machines.
This lecture is the second in a series for Computing: The Human Experience, a transmedia project directed to the general public that explores the co-evolution of computing and humanity. Presented by IBM Fellow Grady Booch, Computing teaches the essential science of computing, presents the stories of the people, events, and inventions of computing, examines the connection among computing, science, and society, and contemplates the future. Hello to my New Nurses... and maybe more experienced ones preparing for their NURSING INTERVIEW!
In my career spanning half a decade, I have both been the interviewee and interviewer!
And I can certainly give you a few nurse interview tips :)
First of all, being prepared for the nursing interview is key... but how do you prepare??
The first thing that you need to do is get comfortable talking about yourself. Which is harder than it sounds, especially with a strangers face staring back at you.
However, if you know this ahead of time, you can prepare a monologe that will show that you are confident and will be a competent nurse!
the nurse interview questions are usually really really hard, with tons of open end questions and also questions that make you talk about your weaknesses. You need to be honest here, talking about your failures sounds like you are saying that you are weak... but you have to focus on the valuable lesion learned and how you will improve yourself in the future!!
Nursing interview, I believe you will literally bomb if you do not prepare in at least one way or another...
Please watch the video and I give several examples of how you can prepare for your nurse interview!!
Also, keep in mind that practice makes perfect... it 's a good idea to apply like crazy to every single job that is being offered as your first nursing interview can be more of a learning experience!

Phillips si è presentato con la sua band di tutto rispetto, che annovera tra i componenti nientemeno che Andy Timmons alla chitarra, Steve Weingart (Dave Weckl, Steve Lukather) alle tastiere e Ernest Tibbs (Allan Holdsworth, Andy Summers, Natalie Cole) al basso.

Modeling and Optimizing Emergency Department Workflow Emergency department operations present numerous challenges for systems optimization. The human-centered service environment is complex and volatile, both for patients and care providers. In this paper, a system is described that couples machine learning, simulation and optimization decision support to improve the efficiency and timeliness of care in the emergency department, while reducing avoidable re-admissions. The model allows one to optimize the ED workflow globally, taking into account the uncertainty of human disease characteristics and care patterns, so as to drive the length of stay and wait-time for patients to a minimum.

Computational intelligence is the manifest destiny of computer science.

Is the mind computable? Can we build sentient machines? What are the implications for humanity if we can?
The human race may be singular, unique across all of time and space. It may be just one of multitudes. Most likely, however, it is an extremely rare thing, an exquisitely precious consequence of the unfolding of the laws of the universe. Still, one truth that we can assert with confidence is that we are. We are self-aware; we know that we know we exist. There is within humanity a drive to recreate itself, to be as a god to things we create in our own image. From the Golem of Jewish mythology, to Leonardo's robot, to the contemporary Kenshiro robot, we project our hopes and our fears into cunning mechanism that mirror us. While these anthropomorphic robots are interesting (and perhaps a bit creepy), there is a less visible revolution taking place in cognitive computing, whose advances are not only helping us better understand the operation of the human brain, they are leading us to create the illusion of sentience.
In this lecture, IBM Fellow Grady Booch explores the development of intelligent computers as projections of what we both dream and what we fear. We examine what it means to be intelligent, and take a journey through past and future approaches to building sentient software-intensive systems. Some such as Minsky believe the mind to be computable; others such as Penrose do not. In the end, we are compelled to consider the question of what it means to be human: producing even the illusion of the mind raises profound questions as to their personhood and our relationship to these machines.
This lecture is the second in a series for Computing: The Human Experience, a transmedia project directed to the general public that explores the co-evolution of computing and humanity. Presented by IBM Fellow Grady Booch, Computing teaches the essential science of computing, presents the stories of the people, events, and inventions of computing, examines the connection among computing, science, and society, and contemplates the future.
