"This historic recording is the first part of an important four-volume documentation of the popular music of Northeast Brazil,Música Popular do Nordeste. It was conceptualized and realized by the producer,Marcus Pereira, through his Discos Marcus Pereira, which also produced several other recordings devoted to the preservation of Brazilian music. The Quinteto Violado was charged with the research for the whole series, also participating as a supporting group. This first volume brings the lively rhythm of the frevo in its varied styles (frevo-canção; frevo de rua, with original arrangements performed by the Banda Municipal do Recife; frevo de bloco; and even the unprejudiced frevo elétrico, or electric frevo, performed by the Trio Elétrico Tapajós) and the most important composers in this genre (Nelson Ferreira, Capiba, Irmãos Valença, João Santiago, Luís Gonzaga de Figueiredo, Ademir Araújo, Geraldo Santos, and Luís Bandeira). While the artistic merits of the singer Zélia Barbosa and the quality of the recording process may be questioned, this is a fundamental piece of research, and a winner of the most important prizes of its period (Estácio de Sá, granted by the Image and Sound Museum of Rio de Janeiro, and Noel Rosa, from the Association of Press Critics of São Paulo)." A sunny showcase of diverse frevo styles out of Recife in NE Brasil. Its also yet another proper gem kindly lent to GC by one DJ Cuica. Big ups! Check this Trio Eletrico track, below. Bonkers! "This album was conceived and produced by Armando Pittigliani, one of the biggest music producers in Brazil. He produced the first albums of bossa nova by [artists like] Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão, Os Cariocas and Tamba Trio, was also producer of Baden Powell, Jair Rodrigues, CY Quartet, Jackson do Pandeiro, Agnaldo Timothy, Elis Regina, among many others. [He] played an important role in song festivals, as a juror, collaborator and producer. It was he who had the bright idea to record the likely winning songs before the end of the festival. So, when the winner was announced, the recording was ready. The next day, stores had the disc with the winning songs on the shelves....

This album, recorded in 1971, aims to present some typical Brazilian rhythms, especially those related to samba. The album is entirely instrumental, and the rhythms are shown in a very didactic [way]" (Acervo Origens)

Four Men With Beards has given us Jorge Ben's "Força Bruta", and Soul Jazz has put out two fantastic Brazilian Rock compilations. That being said, these releases merely scratch the surface of what I see as one of the greatest moments in recorded musical history... Brazil in the 1960's and 1970's.

Silence in Brooklyn, Vol.1, is a compilation of Brazilian music from the 60's and 70's. The goal of it's release is to expand the listener's knowledge of these wonderful artists.

Mestre Geraldo e Sua Bateria- Batucada Genial (Oba, 1977)

Four choice Brazilian batucada misturas (meaning 'mixtures') from Mestre Geraldo & Co. Apparently, this 1977 release on the Oba label was reissued from a 1975 album called Brasil Batuque – Isto É Que É Batucada Vol. 2. I've been especially digging the Geraldo group's penchant for coolly meditative rhythmic swirls. Their soft touch lends dynamism to the ensemble's fuller, more uptempo turns. But even then, the vibe never even gets close to bombastic. Deep grooves. Really feeling this record.

I'm happy to have recently scored this rad, classic batucada record by legendary samba drummer Luciano Perrone. Some of ya'll might recognize his Samba Vocalizado included on that excellent Batucada Capoeira comp put out by Souljazz Records. A killer jam. Well, as far as Batucada Fantastica Vol. 1 goes, it turns out I don't need to rip my own record after all. There's a perfectly good one up over at Toque Musical. Tha Block is Hot!
