The late 1960s saw progressive ideas emanate from the countercultural underground and revolutionise society. Challenging oppressive, outdated norms and expectations, a small number of individuals brought about far-reaching changes as they sought to attain a better world. Their idealism and actions helped mobilise a movement which continues to inspire modern activists and shape how we live today.
In 1966, a year after supervising Bob Dylan ‘going electric’ at the Newport Folk Festival, Joe Boyd co-founded the UFO club on London’s Tottenham Court Road – a seminal countercultural haven for psychedelic, LSD-laced ‘happenings’. He has produced records for artists including Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Toots and the Maytals and REM, and overseen the scoring of films including A Clockwork Orange. More recently, in his fortnightly podcast ‘Joe Boyd’s A-Z’, Boyd dips into his extensive music collection, sharing his insider knowledge and fascinating memories.

Classic Album Sundays celebrated Nick Drake's seminal album "Bryter Layter" with a session supporting The House of St Barnabas charity. The album was presented by CAS founder Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy and guest host, Joe Boyd, an integral figure in Nick Drake's musical career. Joe had so many interesting stories about working with Nick, as well as many insights into his music, which you can hear in this interview.
Nick Drake's poignant lyrics and exquisite guitar playing has made him a posthumous cult figure. He has also been an inspiration to many musicians including REM, Dream Academy, Lucinda Williams, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchcock and too many more to mention. His first two albums were produced by Joe Boyd who discovered Drake and has his own interesting story to tell (including his part when Bob Dylan went electric at Newport Jazz Festival).
Following the interview, the album was played in its entirety on a fabulous Audio Note hi-fi in the atmospheric and intimate surroundings of the chapel at The House of St Barnabas on Soho Square in London. All ticket proceeds went to the House of St Barnabas charity whose vision is to create a future where sustained employment is a reality for those affected by homelessness.

Joe Boyd
Joe Boyd (born August 5, 1942) is an American record producer and writer. He formerly owned Witchseason production company and Hannibal Records. Boyd has played a crucial role in the recording careers of Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band, Vashti Bunyan, John and Beverley Martyn, Maria Muldaur, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and Muzsikás.
Career
Boyd was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Princeton, New Jersey. He attended Pomfret School in Pomfret, Connecticut. He first became involved in music promoting blues artists while a student at Harvard University. After graduating, Boyd worked as a production and tour manager for music impresario George Wein, which took Boyd to Europe to organise concerts with Muddy Waters, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Boyd was responsible for the sound at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, when Bob Dylan played a controversial set backed by electric musicians.
In 1964, Boyd paid his first visit to Britain, returning the following year to establish an overseas office of Elektra Records. In 1966, Boyd opened UFO Club, London’s first psychedelic ballroom. He worked with UFO regulars Pink Floyd, and produced their first single, "Arnold Layne", and recordings by Soft Machine. Boyd worked extensively with audio engineer John Wood at Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea. In this studio, Boyd and Wood made a succession of celebrated albums with British folk and folk rock artists, including the Incredible String Band, Martin Carthy, Nick Drake,John Martyn, Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson. Some of these were produced by Boyd's production company, Witchseason.

Nick Drake
Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician, known for his acoustic guitar-based songs. He failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, but his work has gradually achieved wider notice and recognition. Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old and was a student at the University of Cambridge, and released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded two more albums—Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. Neither sold more than 5,000 copies on initial release. Drake's reluctance to perform live, or be interviewed, contributed to his lack of commercial success. There is no known footage of the adult Drake; he was only ever captured in still photographs and in home footage from his childhood.
Drake suffered from major depression. This was often reflected in his lyrics. On completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On 25 November 1974, at the age of 26, Drake died from an overdose of approximately 30 amitriptyline pills, a prescribed antidepressant. His cause of death was determined to be suicide.

Robyn Hitchcock
Robyn Rowan Hitchcock (born 3 March 1953) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. While primarily a vocalist and guitarist, he also plays harmonica, piano and bass guitar.
Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with The Soft Boys, Hitchcock afterward launched a prolific solo career. His musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Syd Barrett. Hitchcock's lyrics tend to include surrealism, comedic elements, characterisations of English eccentrics, and melancholy depictions of everyday life.
He was signed to two major American labels (A&M Records, then Warner Bros.) over the course of the 1980s and 1990s, and was the subject of a live performance/documentary film (Storefront Hitchcock) by major motion picture director Jonathan Demme in 1998, but despite this, mainstream success has been limited. He has earned strong critical reviews over a steady stream of album releases and live performances, and a "cult following" for his songs.

Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, extended compositions and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and musically influential groups in the history of popular music.
Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 by students Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. They gained popularity performing in London's underground music scene during the late 1960s, and under Barrett's leadership released two charting singles and a successful debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). David Gilmour joined as a fifth member in December 1967; Barrett left the band in April 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. Waters became the band's primary lyricist and, by the mid-1970s, their dominant songwriter, devising the concepts behind their critically and commercially successful albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983). The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall became two of the best-selling albums of all time.

The late 1960s saw progressive ideas emanate from the countercultural underground and revolutionise society. Challenging oppressive, outdated norms and expectations, a small number of individuals brought about far-reaching changes as they sought to attain a better world. Their idealism and actions helped mobilise a movement which continues to inspire modern activists and shape how we live today. In 1966, a year after supervising Bob Dylan ‘going electric’ at the Newport Folk Festival, Joe Boyd co-founded the UFO club on London’s Tottenham Court Road – a seminal countercultural haven for psychedelic, LSD-laced ‘happenings’. Classic Album Sundays celebrated Nick Drake's seminal album "Bryter Layter" with a session supporting The House of St Barnabas charity. The album was presented by CAS founder Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy and guest host, Joe Boyd, an integral figure in Nick Drake's musical career. Joe had so many interesting stories about working with Nick, as well as many insights into his music, which you can hear in this interview. Following the interview, the album was played in its entirety on a fabulous Audio Note hi-fi in the atmospheric and intimate surroundings of the chapel at The House of St Barnabas on Soho Square in London. All ticket proceeds went to the House of St Barnabas charity whose vision is to create a future where sustained employment is a reality for those affected by homelessness.

The late 1960s saw progressive ideas emanate from the countercultural underground and revolutionise society. Challenging oppressive, outdated norms and expectations, a small number of individuals brought about far-reaching changes as they sought to attain a better world. Their idealism and actions helped mobilise a movement which continues to inspire modern activists and shape how we live today.
In 1966, a year after supervising Bob Dylan ‘going electric’ at the Newport Folk Festival, Joe Boyd co-founded the UFO club on London’s Tottenham Court Road – a seminal countercultural haven for psychedelic, LSD-laced ‘happenings’. He has produced records for artists including Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Toots and the Maytals and REM, and overseen the scoring of films including A Clockwork Orange. More recently, in his fortnightly podcast ‘Joe Boyd’s A-Z’, Boyd dips into his extensive music collection, sharing his insider knowledge and fascinating memories.

Following the interview, the album was played in its entirety on a fabulous Audio Note hi-fi in the atmospheric and intimate surroundings of the chapel at The House of St Barnabas on Soho Square in London. All ticket proceeds went to the House of St Barnabas charity whose vision is to create a future where sustained employment is a reality for those affected by homelessness.

Classic Album Sundays celebrated Nick Drake's seminal album "Bryter Layter" with a session supporting The House of St Barnabas charity. The album was presented by CAS founder Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy and guest host, Joe Boyd, an integral figure in Nick Drake's musical career. The late 1960s saw progressive ideas emanate from the countercultural underground and revolutionise society. Challenging oppressive, outdated norms and expectations, a small number of individuals brought about far-reaching changes as they sought to attain a better world. Their idealism and actions helped mobilise a movement which continues to inspire modern activists and shape how we live today. In 1966, a year after supervising Bob Dylan ‘going electric’ at the Newport Folk Festival, Joe Boyd co-founded the UFO club on London’s Tottenham Court Road – a seminal countercultural haven for psychedelic, LSD-laced ‘happenings’. After university, he worked as a production and tour manager for George Wein in Europe where he traveled with Muddy Waters, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and others; and at Newport where he supervised Bob Dylan's electric debut. In 1966, he opened UFO, London's psychedelic ballroom. He went on to produce Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard & Linda Thompson, Maria Muldaur, Toots and the Maytals, REM, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg, Cubanismo, Taj Mahal and many others.
He resides in London.
