The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is an American public broadcaster and television program distributor. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, PBS is an independently operated non-profit organization and is the most prominent provider of television programs to public television stations in the United States, distributing series such as Keeping Up Appearances, BBC World News, NOVA scienceNOW, NOVA, Sesame Street, Doctor Who, PBS NewsHour, Walking with Dinosaurs, Masterpiece, Nature, American Masters, Frontline, and Antiques Roadshow.
Since the mid-2000s Roper polls commissioned by PBS have consistently placed the service as the most-trusted national institution in the United States. However, PBS is not responsible for all programming carried on public television stations, a large proportion of which (including most specials aired during multi-annually pledge drives) come from third-party sources, including member stations (such as WGBH, WETA-TV, WNET, WTTW National Productions), American Public Television and independent producers. This distinction is a frequent source of viewer confusion.
Public broadcasting includes radio, television and other electronic media outlets whose primary mission is public service. In much of the world, funding comes from the government, especially via annual fees charged on receivers. In the United States, public broadcasters may receive some funding from both federal and state sources, but generally most financial support comes from underwriting by foundations and businesses ranging from small shops to corporations, along with listener contributions via pledge drives. The great majority are operated as private not-for-profit corporations.
Public broadcasting may be nationally or locally operated, depending on the country and the station. In some countries, public broadcasting is run by a single organization. Other countries have multiple public broadcasting organizations operating regionally or in different languages. Historically, public broadcasting was once the dominant or only form of broadcasting in many countries (with the notable exception of the United States). Commercial broadcasting now also exists in most of these countries; the number of countries with only public broadcasting declined substantially during the latter part of the 20th century.
Public service is a service which is provided by government to people living within its jurisdiction, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing provision of services. The term is associated with a social consensus (usually expressed through democratic elections) that certain services should be available to all, regardless of income. Even where public services are neither publicly provided nor publicly financed, for social and political reasons they are usually subject to regulation going beyond that applying to most economic sectors. Public policy when made in the public's interest and motivations can provide Public services. Public service is also a course that can be studied at a college and/or university. Examples of public services are the fire brigade, police, army, and paramedics.
Public services are seen as so important that for moral reasons their universal provision should be guaranteed. They may be associated with fundamental human rights (such as the right to water). The Volunteer Fire Dept. and Ambulance Corps. are institutions with the mission of servicing the community. A service is helping others with a specific need or want. Here, service ranges from a doctor curing an illness, to a repair person, to a food pantry.
Race, RACE or "The Race" may refer to:
The Race for Space is the second studio album by British alternative group Public Service Broadcasting. Once again working with the British Film Institute, the new album relives the story of the American and Soviet space race from 1957-1972. The opening track features a speech by John F. Kennedy which was made on September 12, 1962 at Rice University. To launch the album, the band played two concerts on 26 and 27 February 2015 at the National Space Centre in Leicester. The band completed a full 14-date tour of the UK and Ireland to support the album. The band also announced that they will never play the whole album cover to cover live. This is because of the nature of track 4 ("Fire in the Cockpit") and the band said that they will probably never play that track at their performances.
The album reached No. 11 in the UK Chart, ten places higher than where their first album (Inform-Educate-Entertain) peaked. It also reached No. 1 in the UK Indie Albums Chart the week following its release, and the vinyl edition was the 5th highest selling record of 2015 in the UK.

October 4th 1957 marked the start of the space age, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory was the largest radio telescope in the world and the only device that could track Sputnik’s carrier rocket. The Lovell Telescope picked up Sputnik on 11 October 1957 – on the anniversary of that date in 2015, Public Service Broadcasting filmed the video for ‘Sputnik’ in front of the iconic structure. The video celebrates the launch of the first satellite into earth orbit and highlight The Lovell Telescope’s role in making space exploration history. The ‘Sputnik/Korolev’ EP will be released on 12” vinyl, CD & digital on 20 Novemberalong with 4 stellar remixes from Blond:ish, Petar Dundov, Eagles & Butterflies & Plugger. http://vevo....

The series is based on a history of television in England produced by Granada Television and incorporates some of that historical material. Written by Michael Winship, and produced by KCET and WNET, the series is hosted by NBC News reporter Edwin Newman. The New York Times observed that “The series charts the development of the various program forms - the sitcom, the hour-long drama, the live ‘spectacle,’ the variety show, the news telecast. It opens with a breathtaking montage of moments grasped and forever defined by television - the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, the American victory over the Soviet hockey team in the 1980 Olympics, the tiny figur...
