The Portuguese navy of the 16th century.
Portugal reformed naval warfare worldwide after creating several new tactical developments and new types of vessels, strictly intended for warfare, trade and exploration, such as the ‘caravels’, the ‘round caravels’, and the ‘naus’.
Portugal was known during the 16th and 17th centuries for having the biggest and most powerful warships in the world, as well for having the most well prepared fleets for long voyages of exploration. After the Portuguese distinguished themselves worldwide with their navy, its new vessels and tactics would be adopted by every other state in Europe and Asia.
Portugal’s new style of naval combat allowed the Portuguese to be able to fight off much larger fleets with only a handful of vessels. The Portuguese were also the first to use cannons on their vessels. Chronicles from various different sources worldwide often mention how the Portuguese navy sometimes required just one single warship to battle and defeat 30, 50, and sometimes even 100 Asian vessels.
Portuguese ships were deemed gigantic for its period, since no one was used to see such long, so very tall warships. This was one of the reasons that allowed their navy to beat fleets that were far larger in numbers, as well for its artillery, which was among the best in the world. Portugal also focused on developing several new weapons and artillery, to further complete their military power, which was followed by a huge amount of victories.
One must be aware that the Portuguese knew they were always outnumbered, a certainty that led them to employ all their courage and determination in the fights and battles they engaged. In many cases, just mentioning the Portuguese would distress an entire army or fleet, knowing the fierceness and bravery of the Portuguese warriors.
In 1534, the Portuguese finished building what would be known as the most powerful and biggest warship in the world, named São João Baptista, a.k.a. Botafogo. This ship could carry 366 bronze cannons, and had an artillery power of 1,000 tons. For this reason, it became known as Botafogo, literally meaning “fire maker” or “spit fire” in popular Portuguese. A warship with 100 cannons would already be considered a very powerful vessel, this ship hat 3 times as many. During the Christian alliance in the conquest of Tunis, Portugal would distinguish itself during the assault due to this vessel.
These new types of vessels the Portuguese developed, were one of the reasons that would turn Portugal into the 1st global sea power in History and the first modern colonial power from Europe, and its explorers the leaders in the voyages of exploration. Because of this, Portugal’s cartographers were very coveted, a result of its successes in the overseas.
The Portuguese are deemed as the discovers of 2/3 of the at the time unknown world to Europeans, and for this, their vessels were of the utmost importance.

"Dragostea din tei" (pronounced [ˈdraɡoste̯a din tej], "Love from the lindens", official English title: Words of Love), also informally known as "Numa Numa" or "Mai Ya hee" (see lyrics), is the most successful single by the Moldovan pop group O-Zone, sung in Romanian. It shot to the number one spot on the Eurochart Hot 100, where it remained for 12 weeks between June and early September 2004. It topped the single charts in Germany and France for over three months, reached three in the United Kingdom and 72 on the U.S. Pop 100. The song became the fourth best-selling single of the 21st century in France, with 1,170,000 units sold. A popular cover of the song was made by Romanian pop singer Haiducii, which also charted in many countries, especially Italy and Sweden where it topped the singles charts. Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Michael Bourdain (born June 25, 1956) is an American chef, author, and television personality. He is a 1978 graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and a veteran of numerous professional kitchens, including many years as executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles. Though Bourdain is no longer formally employed as a chef, he maintains a relationship with Les Halles in New York. He became widely known for his 2000 book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. His first food and world-travel television show was A Cook's Tour, which ran for 35 episodes on the Food Network from 2002 through 2003. In 2005 he began hosting the Travel Channel's culinary and cultural adventure programs Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005–2012) and The Layover (2011–2013). In 2013, he switched to CNN to host Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.
Early life
Anthony Bourdain was born in New York City, and grew up in Leonia, New Jersey. His parents were Pierre Bourdain (d. 1987), a classical music industry executive for Columbia Records, and Gladys Bourdain (née Sacksman), a staff editor for The New York Times.

Portuguese ships were deemed gigantic for its period, since no one was used to see such long, so very tall warships. This was one of the reasons that allowed their navy to beat fleets that were far larger in numbers, as well for its artillery, which was among the best in the world. Portugal also focused on developing several new weapons and artillery, to further complete their military power, which was followed by a huge amount of victories.
One must be aware that the Portuguese knew they were always outnumbered, a certainty that led them to employ all their courage and determination in the fights and battles they engaged. In many cases, just mentioning the Portuguese would distress an entire army or fleet, knowing the fierceness and bravery of the Portuguese warriors.
In 1534, the Portuguese finished building what would be known as the most powerful and biggest warship in the world, named São João Baptista, a.k.a. Botafogo. This ship could carry 366 bronze cannons, and had an artillery power of 1,000 tons. For this reason, it became known as Botafogo, literally meaning “fire maker” or “spit fire” in popular Portuguese. A warship with 100 cannons would already be considered a very powerful vessel, this ship hat 3 times as many. During the Christian alliance in the conquest of Tunis, Portugal would distinguish itself during the assault due to this vessel.
These new types of vessels the Portuguese developed, were one of the reasons that would turn Portugal into the 1st global sea power in History and the first modern colonial power from Europe, and its explorers the leaders in the voyages of exploration. Because of this, Portugal’s cartographers were very coveted, a result of its successes in the overseas.
The Portuguese are deemed as the discovers of 2/3 of the at the time unknown world to Europeans, and for this, their vessels were of the utmost importance.

In the south of the country, the Algarve is the mainstay of Portuguese tourism with golden sandy beaches, bright red rocky coasts and a profusion of castles built by the Christian kings during the Moorish Wars. Faro is the capital of the Algarve and today its huge old city wall indicates its past importance. Close to the Baroque cathedral, the attractive centre of the old town has been well preserved and indicates the town’s historic and dazzling past. Lisbon is the heart of Portugal and is located on the massive Tejo Bay. The Marques De Pombal rebuilt the city after it experienced the most devastating earthquake ever to hit a European town when only the plain, pointed arches of the Carmo Monastery’s distinctive roof withstood the catastrophic earthquake. Baixa is the name of the lower city from which a lift ascends to the heights of Bairro Alto from where there are amazing views across the rooftops of the old town of Alfama. ‘Electricos’ are Lisbon’s quaint and unique trams which squeak and roar through the old town, travelling along the narrow streets and up and down the hills. The Torre De Belem once guarded the approaches to Lisbon’s harbour. Shimmering white like a fantastic mirage, the city’s most famous landmark is located on the shores of the Tejo. It was from here that ships crews were bid farewell as they set out on their long voyages of discovery. The town of Sintra is situated on a forest slope on the Sierra De Sintra. Its mild climate and proximity to the capital city led the kings of Portugal to build their summer palaces here and there is an abundance of grand residences and palaces each surrounded by beautiful gardens and tropical plants. Located atop a tall rock is the Palacio Da Pena, a pseudo-fantasy castle which dates from the Middle Ages. The long bridge over the River Douro was built by Gustave Eiffel and is in the form of a huge arch constructed solely of iron and from which, on two levels, it connects the town of Porto with Vila Nova De Gaia. Portugal is a country of churches and cathedrals, massive fortresses, magnificent castles and prosperous towns. The sunshine and glorious coastline are mere bonuses!

20 things to do in Lisbon, Portugal | Top Attractions Travel Guide:
Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.

Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.

Nothing is more spectacular than flying high up in the sky and admire the view of the beautiful Algarve region. The basecampers traveled to Albufeira to meet up with José Rosado & Ivo Duarte from the Algarve Paragliding Association. Rodrigo got in touch with them and surprised Troy, his aim was to set him up to face his fear of heights. This adrenaline pumped activity, especially for Troy, ended up to be one of the most contemplative for us! A must for any thrill seeker searching for a deep personal experience! Each one of us had a moment whilst flying the glider, where we felt happy and lucky to be right there, up in the air, at that very moment!

We finish off our adventure in Algarve by cooking the region’s staple dish in the town of Faro!
Although cataplana is the name of the copper cookware famous in the Algarve region, it also lends its name to the dish. We wish to thank the staff at Tertulia Algarvia, and especially chef Margarida Vargues for taking the time to teach us this delicious dish. We highly recommend you pay them a visit if you are in Faro.
Alternatively, you can also try this dish at home, thanks to their generosity for passing on the recipe for our viewers! Check our blog for the recipe of the cataplana dish that we cooked in that episode.
We also stopped by some local hot spots in Faro such as Se7e Pedras wine bar for a glass of the famously crisp portuguese white wine called Vinho verde and Bottle bar for a smokey porto.

The Portuguese navy of the 16th century.
Portugal reformed naval warfare worldwide after creating several new tactical developments and new types of vessels, strictly intended for warfare, trade and exploration, such as the ‘caravels’, the ‘round caravels’, and the ‘naus’.
Portugal was known during the 16th and 17th centuries for having the biggest and most powerful warships in the world, as well for having the most well prepared fleets for long voyages of exploration. After the Portuguese distinguished themselves worldwide with their navy, its new vessels and tactics would be adopted by every other state in Europe and Asia.
Portugal’s new style of naval combat allowed the Portuguese to be able to fight off much larger fleets with only a handful of vessels. The Portuguese were also the first to use cannons on their vessels. Chronicles from various different sources worldwide often mention how the Portuguese navy sometimes required just one single warship to battle and defeat 30, 50, and sometimes even 100 Asian vessels.
Portuguese ships were deemed gigantic for its period, since no one was used to see such long, so very tall warships. This was one of the reasons that allowed their navy to beat fleets that were far larger in numbers, as well for its artillery, which was among the best in the world. Portugal also focused on developing several new weapons and artillery, to further complete their military power, which was followed by a huge amount of victories.
One must be aware that the Portuguese knew they were always outnumbered, a certainty that led them to employ all their courage and determination in the fights and battles they engaged. In many cases, just mentioning the Portuguese would distress an entire army or fleet, knowing the fierceness and bravery of the Portuguese warriors.
In 1534, the Portuguese finished building what would be known as the most powerful and biggest warship in the world, named São João Baptista, a.k.a. Botafogo. This ship could carry 366 bronze cannons, and had an artillery power of 1,000 tons. For this reason, it became known as Botafogo, literally meaning “fire maker” or “spit fire” in popular Portuguese. A warship with 100 cannons would already be considered a very powerful vessel, this ship hat 3 times as many. During the Christian alliance in the conquest of Tunis, Portugal would distinguish itself during the assault due to this vessel.

A Azul de Tróia (Companhia Discográfica Portuguesa) surge de um sonho antigo, gigante e azul. Em 2014, é fundada por Pedro de Tróia e Diogo Almeida, gerando o equilíbrio perfeito do assombro de ideias, coração e visão, ao sentido prático, motor de arranque e pés assentes no chão. Dando continuidade ao rebentamento literário-musical que emergiu em 2008, concentramos esforços para provocar ondas maiores, dedicando-nos à difusão do bom nome de todos os artistas que representamos e dos quais gerimos a carreira: promovendo e cuidando dos seus negócios; gerando obras fonográficas que se tornem intemporais na memória e no espaço; e desempenhando as funções que envolvem o agenciamento dos espectáculos ao vivo. A produção de retratos, videoclipes e demais matérias promocionais são intrínsecas e complementares.
O mundo está de pernas para o ar e, muitas vezes, quem cria, atrai e exprime a sua arte em cima do palco, é precisamente quem menos ou nada recebe financeiramente: os artistas. Veemente contra essa posição, trabalhamos por um pequeno mundo melhor, pretendendo a sustentabilidade dos artistas e declarando fim à utopia de que se pode viver da música a tempo inteiro. Não tenhamos dúvidas: quem define a arte é o artista e ele tem de poder existir e perdurar, sem baixar os braços. Só assim é que o legado cultural se tornará mais valioso, resultando num património melhor e num tesouro maior. Se os artistas vivem para a sua obra, então a obra não pode ter um papel secundário na vida de um artista.
Reconhecendo que os holofotes estão em Lisboa e as lamparinas polvilhadas pelo resto do país, temos como propósito a procura de novos valores culturais para as fileiras da música portuguesa, desenvolvendo-os a fim de potenciar as suas criações artísticas, defendendo as suas opções e preservando as identidades, com metas a longo prazo. Não somos uma família mas anunciamos um movimento cultural em plena marcha, aliado à pretensão de criar novas linguagens, uma linha estética englobante e um selo carimbado sem misericórdia. Recusamos o consenso. Aqui não há fronteiras para a liberdade artística e o descaramento está implícito. Plantamos a primazia do pensamento para elevar a claridade, porque a criação é libertária e a parte dominante uma figura abstracta que reside apenas na nossa imaginação.
Tenhamos a audácia de reconhecer que vivemos num país encantador. Portugal está a aprender e depende de quem cá está. Não podemos desistir de ser, por tudo aquilo a que a vida nos obriga. Valorizemo-nos. Há muito caminho a percorrer e percorrê-lo-emos a passo firme e lento, enquanto hasteamos a nossa cultura, procurando mais e participando activamente na educação musical e literária daqueles que nos rodeiam. A memória não pode mais ser curta e o que se faz por cá tem de ser firmado na terra. Não há vergonha em sonhar. Não tememos o ridículo nem a ambição. Existimos com brio, honestidade e distinção, entre o perigo da vertigem e os passos firmes da virtude. Essa mesma grande virtude que está no saber pular a cerca. Procuremos contornar os pesadelos, a fim de tocar no horizonte lá no fundo porque, se são muitos os dilemas sobre os quais nos deparamos, também há rios lindos para atravessar.

A Severa, tells the story of what has become the biggest myth in the history of Lisbon and Fado.
Maria Severa Onofriana, was born in Lisbon in the third decade of the 19th century.
Maria Severa second reads the story was beautiful, opulent, thin but not skinny breast, black eyes and black hair, with beautiful teeth, thin waist and small feet. Your eyes seduced men. A Severa, conta a história daquela que se tornou, no maior mito de Lisboa e da história do Fado.
Maria Severa Onofriana, nasceu em Lisboa na terceira decada do século 19.
Maria Severa segundo reza a história era linda, de seio opulento, delgada mas não magra, de olhos pretos e cabelos negros, com belos dentes, de cintura fina e pé pequeno. O seu olhar seduzia os homens. Na sua curta vida deslizaram sombras de fidalgos, artistas, politicos, burgueses e alguns vindos da mais negra legião de ladrões e outros marginais.
Foram seus amantes conhecidos: Francisco Silva, tambem conhecido por Chico Alegrete, D Francisco Paula Portugal, 13º Conde de Vimioso ( o Marialva ), e ainda um jovem aspirante da Marinha, do qual se desconhece o nome.
Durante 8 anos, esta mulher andou vacilante nos braços destes três homens, dois dos quais amou com toda a sinceridade e, nos de muitos mais a quem vendia o corpo e os seus beijos.
Maria Severa tinha um elevado carácter, era gentil, sedutora, romântica, e extremamente caridosa para com os mais desfavorecidos pela vida.
Morreu, não se sabe bem com que doença; fala-se em apoplexia, sifilis, tuberculose ou angina de peito.
Na certidão de óbito e no registo de enterramento consta nomeadamente o seguinte:
"No dia trinta de novembro de 1864, na rua do Capelão,nº 35A, faleceu Maria Severa Onofriana de 26 anos de idade, solteira, meretriz. Foi a sepultar ás 17 horas do dia 2 de dezembro do mesmo ano, ala oriental do cemitério do Alto de São João, na vala comum."

A Severa, tells the story of what has become the biggest myth in the history of Lisbon and Fado.
Maria Severa Onofriana, was born in Lisbon in the third decade of the 19th century.
Maria Severa second reads the story was beautiful, opulent, thin but not skinny breast, black eyes and black hair, with beautiful teeth, thin waist and small feet. Your eyes seduced men. In his short life slid shadows of noblemen, artists, politicians, bourgeois and some from the darkest legion of thieves and other criminals.
Were acquaintances lovers: Francisco Silva, also known as Chico Alegrete, Portugal Paula Francis D, 13th Earl of Vimioso (Marialva), and still a young aspiring Navy, from which the name is unknown.
During eight years, this woman walked unsteadily into the arms of these three men, two of whom he loved with all sincerity and in many more who sold her body and her kisses.
Maria Severa had a high character, was gentle, seductive, romantic, and extremely charitable to those most disadvantaged by life.
Died, it is not clear that disease; we speak of stroke, syphilis, tuberculosis or angina pectoris.
On the death certificate and burial record stated inter alia that:
"On November 30, 1864, the street's Chaplain, No. 35A, Maria Severa died Onofriana 26 years of age, unmarried, hooker.Was to bury ace 17 hours of the 2nd of December the same year, the eastern wing of the cemetery of Alto de São João, in a common grave. "

A Severa, conta a história daquela que se tornou, no maior mito de Lisboa e da história do Fado.
Maria Severa Onofriana, nasceu em Lisboa na terceira decada do século 19.
Maria Severa segundo reza a história era linda, de seio opulento, delgada mas não magra, de olhos pretos e cabelos negros, com belos dentes, de cintura fina e pé pequeno. O seu olhar seduzia os homens. Na sua curta vida deslizaram sombras de fidalgos, artistas, politicos, burgueses e alguns vindos da mais negra legião de ladrões e outros marginais.
Foram seus amantes conhecidos: Francisco Silva, tambem conhecido por Chico Alegrete, D Francisco Paula Portugal, 13º Conde de Vimioso ( o Marialva ), e ainda um jovem aspirante da Marinha, do qual se desconhece o nome.
Durante 8 anos, esta mulher andou vacilante nos braços destes três homens, dois dos quais amou com toda a sinceridade e, nos de muitos mais a quem vendia o corpo e os seus beijos.
