Teenagers charged after 600km road trip in stolen car through NSW

NSW Police have arrested and charged five teenagers after they allegedly travelled more than 600 kilometres in a car stolen from Amaroo in Canberra.

The black Mercedes Benz sedan was allegedly stolen from a home on Friday morning, before being driven by a 16-year-old boy, accompanied by two other boys aged 13 and 15 and a 14-year-old girl.

About 7am on Saturday, the driver of the car refuelled at a service station at Molong and left without paying for the fuel.

Police received several calls from members of the public who saw the car travelling at speeds of more than 150km/h along the Mitchell Highway towards Dubbo.

About 8am officers from Orana Local Area Command found the Mercedes in Whylandra Street, Dubbo. Police attempted to stop the car using lights and sirens, but the driver failed to pull over.

A short pursuit took place but was stopped by officers due to concerns for the safety of other road users.

More than four hours later, Coonamble Police saw the Mercedes allegedly doing burnouts in the Coonamble township. Officers again attempted to stop the car but it was driven from the scene, heading west along Tooroweenah Road at speed.

A short time later, police located the Mercedes, which had crashed on Tooroweenah Road with a tyre blowout.

Officers arrested the five teenagers at the scene and took them to Coonamble Police Station for interviews.

A NSW Police spokesman said the 16-year-old boy had been charged over the car's theft, not stopping during a police pursuit, dangerous driving, driving unlicensed and two outstanding warrants.

The other teens were each charged in relation to being passengers in a stolen car.

All five teens were refused bail and required to appear at a Children's Court on Sunday.

Police said their inquiries werer continuing and they expected further charges would be laid.
