The Who are an English rock band that formed in 1964. Their classic line-up consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide and establishing their reputation equally on live shows and studio work.
The Who developed from an earlier group, the Detours, and established themselves as part of the pop art and mod movements, featuring auto-destructive art by destroying guitars and drums on stage. Their first single as the Who, "I Can't Explain", reached the UK top ten, followed by a string of singles including "My Generation", "Substitute" and "Happy Jack". In 1967, they performed at the Monterey Pop Festival and released the US top ten single "I Can See for Miles", while touring extensively. The group's fourth album, 1969's rock opera Tommy, included the single "Pinball Wizard" and was a critical and commercial success. Live appearances at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival, along with the live album Live at Leeds, cemented their reputation as a respected rock act. With their success came increased pressure on lead songwriter and visionary Townshend, and the follow-up to Tommy, Lifehouse, was abandoned. Songs from the project made up 1971's Who's Next, which included the hit "Won't Get Fooled Again". The group released the album Quadrophenia in 1973 as a celebration of their mod roots, and oversaw the film adaptation of Tommy in 1975. They continued to tour to large audiences before semi-retiring from live performances at the end of 1976. The release of Who Are You in 1978 was overshadowed by the death of Moon shortly after.

Released in November 1971 Out here in the fields I fight for my meals I get my back into my living. I don't need to fight To prove I'm right I don't need to be forgiven. yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Don't cry Don't raise your eye It's only teenage wasteland Sally, take my hand We'll travel south cross land Put out the fire And don't look past my shoulder. The exodus is here The happy ones are near Let's get together Before we get much older. Teenage wasteland It's only teenage wasteland. Teenage wasteland Oh, yeah Its only teenage wasteland They're all wasted!
Young men going out and making noise was exactly how one might describe The Who’s raison d’être when they first formed as The Detours, in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, in 1962. Youth, in all its arrogance, was a vital ingredient in those early days, an attitude crystallised three years later on “My Generation” in which they unwittingly provided their future critics with a well-worn taunt in the infamous decree of “hope I die before I get old”. This album is partly in memoriam for Entwistle and partly for those who need reminding of The Who’s matchless contribution to the rock acropolis. Though at the height of their powers The Who prided (and possibly over-indulged) themselves on their albums, it was always the 45rpm pop single that provided the greatest thrills, from the brusqueness o...

This is Track 16 on The Who's Album - Who's Next. The original version of "Behind Blue Eyes" was recorded at The Record Plant in New York, on March 18, 1971 and produced by Kit Lambert. Al Kooper on organ. Previously unreleased.
This is Track 09 of the Who's album - Who's next. First recorded (then rejected) in New York on March 16, 1971, this became the first song to be worked on with Glyn Johns during a trial session at Stargroves with The Rolling Stones Mobile studio in April, 1971. This version (unlike the New York original) used the synthesizer track from Pete's demo and was edited down for the single which reached #9 in the UK and #15 in the USA. Played onstage at the Young Vic and retained at every Who concert thereafter.

[HELP ME MAKE MORE VIDEO ESSAYS LIKE THIS! https://www.patreon.com/AdamWestbrook] It was the change that no-one saw coming: the idea that we could take a book, a painting or a song and send it through cables and wires and even thin air to the other end of the world - and it would be identical on the other side. But this idea underpins everything about the Information Age we live in. How did we make such a mind bending transition into the digital world? And how does it work? It turns out it's all based on a concept that is surprisingly beautiful in its simplicity. This short video essay explores what that idea is and tells you about the man who figured it all out. The 12 basic principles of animation were developed by the 'old men' of Walt Disney Studios, amongst them Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, during the 1930s. Of course they weren't old men at the time, but young men who were at the forefront of exciting discoveries that were contributing to the development of a new art form. These principles came as a result of reflection about their practice and through Disney's desire to use animation to express character and personality. This movie is my personal take on those principles, applied to simple shapes. Like a cube. Check also the animated gif gallery here http://the12principles.tumblr.com/.
My friend Amanda had never seen a whole Star Wars film. When I asked her if she wanted to watch the original trilogy she said that she would, but that she already knew what happens. So I took out my voice recorder and asked her to start from the top. I then created some very basic animation in Final Cut to go along with her narration. It was the only live album that was released while the group were still actively recording and performing with their best known line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. Initially released in the United States on 16 May 1970, by Decca and MCA and the United Kingdom on 23 May 1970, by Track and Polydor, the album has been reissued on several occasions and in several different formats. Since its initial reception, Live at Leeds has been cited by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time. 1. "Heaven and Hell" (John Entwistle) 0:00 2. Road movie. Experimental documentary. The film is inspired by the poem of 19th century written by Nikolay Nekrasov. Nekrasov started writing “Who is happy and free in Russia” straight after the serfdom abolition in Russia in 1863 and was working on it for 14 years. The poem tells the story of seven free men, and their travels on a long journey all over Russia, trying to answer the question: who is happy and free? In the 21st century those seven free men are coming back to the same road in the search for happiness, but in the context of contemporary Russia. Duration 15 min 32 sec Lyubov Matyunina lubudubum.com

I watched it over and over again, listened to Ira Glass' voice, and told myself, that I am not the only person who is constantly disappointed about the gap between one's taste and one's skills. Later in 2012, I decided to do my own filmed version of Ira's interview - using my own language to tell his message. It took me about a year from concept to upload. I made it for myself and for anybody who is in doubt about his/her creative career. I also think that Ira Glass' message isn't only limited to the creative industry. It can be applied to everyone who starts out in a new environment and is willin...

Would you live in a treehouse? The appeal is obvious to any kid, but it can seem like a daunting idea for adults. Nevertheless, cultural interest has erupted in recent years. You can vacation at a "treesort," or watch a reality show about treetop architecture, or even rent a room in a treehouse on Airbnb. In this short documentary, we interview people who build, live in, and love treehouses. These are far from the forts of childhood memory, though. They employ artificial limbs for support, boast both plumbing and running water, and wouldn't look out of place in luxury lifestyle magazines. "Treehouses are becoming more and more adult," says Michael Garnier, a treehouse building pioneer. "They're not just for kids anymore."

Winner of the YouTube Play Guggenheim Biennial Festival. Soundtrack available here: http://tinyurl.com/7xj6net Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating. I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper. Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds). Also check my live presentation of Birds on the Wires at TEDx São Paulo: http://www.tedxs...

Out of nothing Matter was created. Out of Matter a Goddess was born. A Goddess inlaid with Stars dances in the Emptiness. The Goddess' Dance creates Light so that Shadows can now exist. The Universe as we know it is created, filled with its dim distant dying Stars. A Sphere rustles between Goddess' hands. Earth is born. Who is Peter Joseph? A Mini-Doc by Charles Robinson. In late 2009 I was able to interview Peter Joseph, the creator of "Zeitgeist, The Movie" and "Zeitgeist- Addendum"; Founder of The Zeitgeist Movement, in his home. He described himself and his life in details in what is likely a rare interview. He was kind enough to provide me with previously unreleased media and video and I in turn did my best to create a documentary (albeit kinda poor in quality compared to his work!) that would help express who this person is. www.whoispeterjoseph.com
[PUNK:]
You declared you would be three inches taller
You only became what we made you.
Thought you were chasing a destiny calling
You only earned what we gave you.
You fell and cried as our people were starving,
Now you know that we blame you.
You tried to walk on the trail we were carving,
Now you know that we framed you.
[G.F.:]
I'm the guy in the sky
Flying high Flashing eyes
No surprise I told lies
I'm the punk in the gutter
I'm the new president
But I grew and I bent
Don't you know? don't it show?
I'm the punk with the stutter.
My my my my my mmmm my my my.
GGGGG-g-g-g-g generation.
[PUNK:]
We tried to speak between lines of oration
You could only repeat what we told you.
Your axe belongs to a dying nation,
They don't know that we own you.
You're watching movies trying to find the feelers,
You only see what we show you.
We're the slaves of the phony leaders
Breathe the air we have blown you.
[G.F.:]
I'm the guy [etc.]
I have to be careful not to preach
I can't pretend that I can teach,
And yet I've lived your future out
By pounding stages like a clown.
And on the dance floor broken glass,
The bloody faces slowly pass,
The broken seats in empty rows,
It all belongs to me you know.
[PUNK:]
You declared [etc.]
