Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting of another, usually a child, from that person's biological or legal parent or parents, and, in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities, along with filiation, from the biological parent or parents. Unlike guardianship or other systems designed for the care of the young, adoption is intended to effect a permanent change in status and as such requires societal recognition, either through legal or religious sanction. Historically, some societies have enacted specific laws governing adoption; where others have tried to achieve adoption through less formal means, notably via contracts that specified inheritance rights and parental responsibilities without an accompanying transfer of filiation. Modern systems of adoption, arising in the 20th century, tend to be governed by comprehensive statutes and regulations.
While the modern form of adoption emerged in the United States, forms of the practice appeared throughout history. The Code of Hammurabi, for example, details the rights of adopters and the responsibilities of adopted individuals at length. The practice of adoption in ancient Rome is well documented in the Codex Justinianus.

We all woke up at 3 in the morning, wide awake, ready to go meet our new baby girl! Breakfast didn't open until 6 so we just hung out and played. We ate breakfast downstairs and then went back to our room to try to relax and get ready to meet our new baby girl. The nerves mark and I were experiencing were unbelievable. We had no idea what to expect, but what we got was nothing close to our dreams. I asked my mom how she would describe the day-- her response-- "I witnessed a miracle today" At 9:00 we had an uber pick us up and take us to the foster care offices. They share buildings with an orphanage for special needs children. It was very interesting and humbling all at the same time. We had a planned meeting at 930 with the workers and social workers, under the impression we would not me...

a very touching story of adoption from Kelly boy, Kelly girl, + Posey. we were invited to come into their home and tell this story right before Candice, the birth mother, was set to leave town after Chapel was born. Kelly girl first shared her very powerful story with us to see what we thought and if there was a story there. we were really drawn in by the idea of being able to get involved with such an intimate and personal process that includes some pretty remarkable paths crossing. Joyce started out by calling all of the parties involved, getting an idea of their role and seeing if they would be willing to share their take on camera. we ended up spending two days with the Kelly's and it was definitely an experience that left quite an impression on everybody involved. this film was comm...
Unfortunately, the Wake County SPCA has requested that I take this wonderful video down :(. UMG, the rights holders of the ABBA song, had determined the video was too commercial and not educational enough to qualify for a nonprofit education video. They've got an explanation of everything on their web site. www.spcawake.org Thank you to everyone who shared the video and found that it made you just a little bit happier.
