Teaser 2 is the 2nd of 3 teasers released by Process Films for its current 2 year film project. Following some of Norway´s most progressive snowboarders, A Shot in the Dark will be split into two separate films. The first is a trick film while the second follows a documentary format. Progression in snowboarding has been moving at an alarming rate over the last few years. A Shot in the Dark takes a look at the various channels of pressure riders face, and the harsh reality of injuries. The films will be distributed internationally by major snowboard publications near the end of 2011. Filmed in Norway, New Zealand, Switzerland, Austria, France and America. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a fifty-foot tsunami off the coast of northeastern Japan. The tsunami destroyed much of the northeastern coastline of Japan and instantly overwhelmed the protective seawall meant to protect the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The plant’s electrical grid was destroyed—effectively resulting in the failure of the nuclear plant’s primary electrical systems and backup generators. The loss of the cooling system led to a series of massive hydrogen explosions that released an enormous amount of radioactivity into the upper atmosphere. Additionally, it triggered full-blown reactor core meltdowns in three of the plant's reactors. The meltdowns escalated into melt-throughs as the seawater being poured onto the reactors and exposed fuel rods ultimately failed. Fukushima now exists in a state of jeopardy; the worst case possible scenario has been realized. As the most devastating nuclear crisis the world has ever faced, we have crossed the boundary where modern science has not gone before; ultimately, we are facing new problems that have no easy solution. What is certain are the long lasting implications of this disaster that will be measured not in decades—but in centuries. The catastrophic nuclear disaster in northeastern Japan continues with no end in sight. As nuclear hot spots are slowly beginning to show up all over Japan, radiation is continuing to leak into the ocean, ground and atmosphere. In terms of the total amount of radiation released into the environment, nuclear expert Arnold Gundersen has stated that we are now looking at the equivalent of twenty Chernobyl events. It has been confirmed by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) that three reactors suffered a complete meltdown shortly after the earthquake. In addition to the meltdowns, all three reactors have since suffered a complete melt-through—which is the worst-case possible scenario. The nuclear core has melted through the outer containment vessel and is now in direct contact with the Earth. The hypothetical "China Syndrome" event has now become a reality; the melted core has penetrated the Earth and is contaminating the groundwater below the plant. Workers are reporting cracks in the Earth and radioactive steam being emitted from the cracks. The damaged reactors continue to emit radioactivity and are too hot to be entombed in concrete. As the melted nuclear reactor cores continue to experience criticality, radiation spikes are continually being discovered around the plant. It will be at least another year before they cool enough to be entombed—which will ultimately not stop the radioactive releases. In the event of an aftershock, reactor four also still has the possibility of collapsing, melting down and releasing an enormous amount of radiation into the atmosphere. Much of the area around the planet will be indefinitely uninhabitable for hundreds of years. Early symptoms of radiation sickness are beginning to show up in children who live near the plant. Radioactive isotopes are being detected in the breast milk and urine of Japanese citizens as far away as Tokyo. Radiation is slowly bleeding into the Pacific Ocean, contaminating sea life up to 460 km away and could reach the west coast of the United States within a year. Over time, radiation will slowly work its way up the food chain, contaminating a large percentage of the sea-life in the Pacific. Radioactive fallout from the disaster has resulted in the release of extremely radioactive nuclear hot particles that have been detected on the west coast of the United States since March. Hot particles are virtually undetectable isotopes that continuously expose a person to internal radiation and can eventually cause cancer. Radioactive Fallout consisting of Iodine-131; Plutonium-238; Cesium-134,137; Strontium-90; Barium; Americium; Tellurium; and Uranium is being detected in the precipitation, drinking water, milk, soil and food supply of the United States. Fallout is continuing to contaminate much of the air, water, and land in the Northern Hemisphere. Future cancer epidemics, birth defects, and genetic mutations in the Northern Hemisphere in the coming decades could total millions. Infant mortality rates in the Pacific Northwest are up 35% in the last three months, possibly in relation to the Fukushima event. In addition to the near total media blackout on the disaster by the United States and Japanese mass media, both governments have greatly underestimated the extreme magnitude and danger of the situation that we are facing. TEPCO has continued to consistently underestimate, cover up, mislead, and lie about the entire situation from the initial stages of the accident. The E.P.A. has stopped all radiation monitoring in the United States during the crisis as they continue to downplay the magnitude of the current situation. "OUR FILM AND THE PEOPLE IN IT ALL BEAR WITNESS TO THE SIMPLE FACT THAT MATT SHEPARD WAS A GOOD PERSON—AN AMAZING PERSON WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE WHO TRAGICALLY FELL VICTIM TO THE IGNORANCE AND HATRED THAT PERSISTS IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY." -MICHELE JOSUE, DIRECTOR Fifteen years ago, just past midnight on October 12, 1998, my dear friend Matt Shepard died from a vicious anti-gay attack at the hands of confessed homophobe Aaron McKinney and his accomplice Russell Henderson. Matt’s death opened the world’s eyes, including my own, to the hate and inequality the LGBT community struggles against to this very day. I was 19 when Matt died and his loss was devastating for me. It’s a hard thing to understand, but as his story became an international news event, my heartbreak and sense of loss only grew as my friend Matt was replaced by “Matthew Shepard,” an historic figure and icon that will forever be associated with unspeakable violence and hate. And as the media stripped my friend of his humanity, I made a promise to myself that when I was emotionally and artistically ready, I would share, with the world, who Matt really was — in the only way I knew how, through film. So three years ago, in 2010, after close to a year of research and intense discussion, I, along with a very small team, set off to make “Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine,” a film that would recapture the Matt the world barely knew. During the course of these years, I traveled all across the U.S. as well as Switzerland and Morocco to film important people and pivotal locations from Matt’s life. We made numerous trips to Laramie, Wyoming, where we photographed evidence from Matt’s attack. We interviewed the exemplary law officials who were involved in his case, including Undersheriff Rob DeBree, who painstakingly walked us through every detail of that fateful evening’s events. We filmed everyone from Matt’s parents, his closest friends, teachers, and mentors, to the bartender who last saw Matt and his murderers at the Fireside on October 6, 1998. The people I chose to be featured in “Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine,” many of whom are also mutual friends of mine, all had close relationships with Matt and knew him at various points in his all-too-brief life. Collectively, they construct a truly encompassing and intimate portrait of Matt as he really was—a complex, sensitive, gay young man who worked hard to find peace and his place in the world. Through their vivid recollections of Matt, his joys and struggles, they reveal a young person, struggling to come of age, who is no different than any of us. While Matt’s death did open my eyes to a world that could be so hostile and cruel, in many ways, the opportunity to tell Matt’s story has also showed me how incredibly good, beautiful, and just the world can be. Matt’s story includes exemplary police work, tireless activism, and the legislative victory of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. His story shows us how love overcomes hate, and mercy surpasses cruelty and intolerance. Finally, there is the power of “Matthew Shepard,” Matt’s legacy to inspire current and future generations to be proud of who they are and to live their lives with courage, compassion, and forgiveness. As a filmmaker and Matt’s friend, I feel extraordinary gratitude to be able to tell his incredible story and a tremendous obligation to depict him honestly, as the flawed, yet wonderful human being he was. For this reason, it is heartbreaking to me that the dehumanization and victimization of Matt continues to this day in the form of outrageous conspiracy theories and disgraceful character assassinations, which can only be motivated by a reckless opportunism and a blatant disregard for any sort of acceptable journalistic standards. Now more than ever, our film stands as a witness to what actually happened the tragic night of October 6, 1998 and, more importantly, to the innately good, kind, and big-hearted person Matt was. Our film and the people in it all bear witness to the simple fact that Matt Shepard was a good person—an amazing person with a bright future who tragically fell victim to the ignorance and hatred that persists in our society today. As a storyteller, I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to tell Matt’s story in the honest, sensitive, and dignified way it deserves to be told. As Matt’s friend, I am forever grateful to have this opportunity to stand up for him, alongside his family and friends and countless supporters around the world, as he is not here to stand up for himself.
