Crimson Tide is a 1995 American submarine film directed by Tony Scott, produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It takes place during a period of political turmoil in the Russian Federation, in which ultranationalists threaten to launch nuclear missiles at the United States and Japan. It focuses on a clash of wills between the new executive officer (Denzel Washington) of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine and its seasoned commanding officer (Gene Hackman), arising from conflicting interpretations of an order to launch their missiles.
The film was scored by Hans Zimmer, who won a Grammy Award for the main theme, which makes heavy use of synthesizers in place of traditional orchestral instruments.
In post-Soviet Russia, civil war erupts as a result of armed conflict in Chechnya. Military units, loyal to (fictional) Russian ultra-nationalist Vladimir Radchenko, have taken control of a nuclear missile installation and are threatening nuclear war if either the American or Russian governments attempt to confront him.

Capt. Ramsey: At the Naval War College it was metallurgy and nuclear reactors, not 19th-century philosophy. Capt. Ramsey: "War is a continuation of politics by other means." Von Clausewitz. Hunter: I think, sir, that what he was actually trying to say was a little more... Capt. Ramsey: Complicated? Hunter: Yes the purpose of war is to serve a political end but the true nature of war is to serve itself. Capt. Ramsey: I'm very impressed. In other words, the sailor most likely to win the war is the one most willing to part company with the politicians and ignore everything except the destruction of the enemy. You'd agree with that. Hunter: I'd agree that, um, that's what Clausewitz was trying to say. Capt. Ramsey: But you wouldn't agree with it? Hunter: No, sir, I do not. No, I just think tha...

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep,
Its own appointed limits keep.
Oh Saviour whose almighty word,
The winds and waves submissive heard,
Who walkest on the foaming deep,
and calm amid it's rage did sleep
Oh hear us when we cry to thee,
for those in peril on the sea.
