Woman dies after leading police on chase through WA's south west

A woman who led police on a chase through WA's south west has died after colliding head-on with another vehicle on Forrest Highway on Saturday evening.

At around 7.30pm, police responded to reports of a Ford Econovan being driven erratically in the Treendale area.

Police officers conducted a patrol of the area and located a vehicle matching the description of the van outside a service station.

Officers pulled into the service station in order to make further inquiries, but the driver attempted to flee the scene before police could question her.

WA Police spokesman Samuel Dinnison said the van struck the police vehicle, and exited the service station onto Forrest Highway.

The driver of the van headed north on the highway and failed to stop for police, he said.

Officers aborted the chase, and continued to monitor the vehicle from a distance.

The police spokesman said the driver then attempted to throw officers off for a second time.

"The van turned off Forrest Highway onto Stanley Road, [and] the police officers also turned onto Stanley Road. The van struck the police vehicle a second time, before turning back onto the Forrest Highway," he said.

The van then proceeded to drive the wrong way down the Forrest Highway, driving north in the southbound lanes.

A short time later, it crashed head-on with another vehicle.

The woman died as a result of her injuries, and the driver of the other vehicle was taken to Bunbury Regional Hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Both Major Crash Investigators and the WA Police Internal Affairs Unit detectives are currently assessing the circumstances surrounding the crash, given the earlier attempt by officers to intercept the vehicle.

Anyone with information relating to the crash has been asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
