Car

A car is a wheeled, self-powered motor vehicle used for transportation and a product of the automotive industry. Most definitions of the term specify that cars are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels with tyres, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods. The year 1886 is regarded as the birth year of the modern car. In that year, German inventor Karl Benz built the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Cars did not become widely available until the early 20th century. One of the first cars that was accessible to the masses was the 1908 Model T, an American car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Cars were rapidly adopted in the United States of America, where they replaced animal-drawn carriages and carts, but took much longer to be accepted in Western Europe and other parts of the world.

Cars are equipped with controls used for driving, parking, passenger comfort and safety, and controlling a variety of lights. Over the decades, additional features and controls have been added to vehicles, making them progressively more complex. Examples include rear reversing cameras, air conditioning, navigation systems, and in car entertainment. Most cars in use in the 2010s are propelled by an internal combustion engine, fueled by deflagration of gasoline (also known as petrol) or diesel. Both fuels cause air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climate change and global warming. Vehicles using alternative fuels such as ethanol flexible-fuel vehicles and natural gas vehicles are also gaining popularity in some countries. Electric cars, which were invented early in the history of the car, began to become commercially available in 2008.

Car is a British automotive enthusiast magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. International editions are published by Bauer Automotive in Brazil, China, Greece, India, Malaysia (since December 2012, through Astro),Mexico, the Middle East, Poland (under the title Cars), Romania, Russia, South Africa (under the title topcar), Spain, Thailand and Turkey. A Japanese counterpart, Car Magazine (カーマガジン, kaa magajin), is published by Neko Publishing.

Car features a regular group test under the 'Giant Test' name, which was originally developed by the magazine in the 1970s. It also features 'newcomer' first drives of new cars, interviews with significant figures in the motor industry and other features.

Crank is a village near Rainford, Merseyside, England in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens. Historically part of Lancashire, it is known locally for its ghost stories 'The White Rabbit of Crank' and 'Crank Caverns'.

The village had one public house - The Red Cat, which closed in August 2015.

Crank was iconicAustralian rock group Hoodoo Gurus' sixth studio album. The album was produced by Ed Stasium (Ramones, Living Colour, Smithereens), who had mixed Hoodoo Gurus previous studio album, Kinky in 1991. It was the band's first release on Zoo Records. The single "The Right Time" (November 1993) reached #41 on the ARIA Singles Chart with "You Open My Eyes" (February 1994, #43) and "Less Than a Feeling" (May 1994, #26) also charting.

EMI re-released the album on 6 February 2005 with an additional nine bonus tracks, a fold out poster and liner notes by Andy Strachan (The Living End). One of the bonus tracks is "Television Addict" which was originally performed by Perth punk band The Victims in 1977 with Gurus' Dave Faulkner known as Dave Flick. "Turn Up Your Radio" originally by Australian band The Masters Apprentices was released in 1995 as a single credited to The Masters Apprentices with Hoodoo Gurus.

Cardinal direction

The four cardinal directions or cardinal points are the directions of north, east, south, and west, commonly denoted by their initials: N, E, S, W. East and west are at right angles to north and south, with east being in the clockwise direction of rotation from north and west being directly opposite east. Intermediate points between the four cardinal directions form the points of the compass. The intermediate (intercardinal, or ordinal) directions are northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). Further, the intermediate direction of every set of intercardinal and cardinal direction is called a secondary-intercardinal direction, the eight shortest points in the compass rose to the right, i.e. NNE, ENE, ESE, and so on.

Locating the directions

Direction versus bearing

To keep to a bearing is not, in general, the same as going in a straight direction along a great circle. Conversely, one can keep to a great circle and the bearing may change. Thus the bearing of a straight path crossing the North Pole changes abruptly at the Pole from North to South. When travelling East or West, it is only on the Equator that one can keep East or West and be going straight (without need to steer). Anywhere else, maintaining latitude requires a change in direction, requires steering. However, this change in direction becomes increasingly negligible as one moves to lower latitudes.
