Nepal (i/nəˈpɔːl/;Nepali: नेपाल [neˈpal]), officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country located in South Asia. With an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 27 million, Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by area and the 41st most populous country. It is located in the Himalayas and bordered to the north by China and to the south, east, and west by India. Nepal is separated from Bangladesh by the narrow Indian Siliguri Corridor and from Bhutan by the Indian state of Sikkim. Kathmandu is the nation's capital city and largest metropolis.
The mountainous north of Nepal has eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest (Nepali: सगरमाथा Sagarmāthā). More than 250 peaks over 20,000 ft (6,096 m) above sea level are located in Nepal. The southern Terai region is fertile and humid.
Hinduism is practiced by about 81.3% of Nepalis, the highest percentage of any country. Buddhism is linked historically with Nepal and is practiced by 9% of its people, followed by Islam at 4.4%, Kiratism 3.1%, Christianity 1.4%, and animism 0.4%. A large portion of the population, especially in the hill region, may identify themselves as both Hindu and Buddhist, which can be attributed to the syncretic nature of both faiths in Nepal.

Carol explains the importance of traction in an elephants foot pad. Like the grooves in vehicle tires create traction and safety, grooves in an elephants foot pad enables them to maneuver safely in any terrain.
Elephants living in captivity do not get enough natural, self directed exercise. As result they need to have their nails and foot pads trimmed on a regular basis. Unfortunately mahouts in Asia seldom trim, resulting in overgrown and cracked nails and pads. This condition can lead to foot rot, infections and osteomyilitis, a captivity induced terminal disease. Elephant Aid International trains mahouts in proper foot care to improve the welfare of captive-held elephants.

From Kathmandu we made our way to Darchula, a small town in far Western Nepal, on the Nepal-India border. Armed with heavy packs, big smiles, some maps and with a keen sense of adventure, we headed off into the unknown. Plan A was to cross the entire country on foot. We ended up making it only half way, and our experience was twice as rewarding because of it. We both plan to finish our journey some day soon. Here are some snippets of an incredible journey. I was first drawn to Nepal because of the mountains...but it's the people who keep bringing me back. See you again soon, Nepal :-)

As part of my Gap Year, I went to Nepal to help out at a local school in a village called Samagaun. It was quite difficult to fit everything into the video and still keep things interesting, so many many things are left out (scenery mostly!) Nepal is truly spectacular. I have never been to a country quite like it, and I intend to go back one day!

At one time this high valley contained seven fresh water lakes named Pokhari and they gave this holiday paradise its present day name. 48 hours in Nepal: Video Guide to Kathmandu We’re just back from our 48 hours in Nepal trip, and what a beautiful surprise! It was my first time ever while Jeff has been several times, and I absolutely fell in love with the colours, the smells, the people and even the incessant horn honking noises. A beautiful country located only a 5 hour flight from Dubai, Nepal is usually visited for more than a short weekend, but what can you do when you work full-time! Home of the beautiful Himalayas and iconic Everest and Anapurna, Nepal is also worth the visit for less adventurous people, and Kathmandu is really one to see. Hiking, white water rafting, yoga retreats and trekking are also possible closer to the capital, so depending on your taste, you can make your 48 hours in Nepal more cultura...

In part four of my video travel guide to India I travel to Darjeeling, the famed hill station known for its views and famous tea plantations. The city itself is nestled in the Himalaya mountains between Nepal and Northeast India, and is a popular place for people to stay before heading into the mountains for a trek. In this video I visit Observatory Hill, home to the temple where it is thought Darjeeling got its name. Today there are several shrines there, thousands of prayer flags decorating the trees, and even a temple cave. I then head to Happy Valley Tea Estate, one of the only tea plantations actually located in town, where I explore the grounds and sit down for afternoon tea with a local picker. Despite what I always assumed to be an acute sense of smell, I had difficulty picking o...
In April, 2013, I traveled to India, video camera in hand, filming the sights, eating the food, meeting the people, and experiencing what turned out to be one of my favorite countries to visit from all of my travels. Throughout August, 2013, I will begin releasing the videos from my five-part travel series, which will include videos from Calcutta, Bodhgaya, Varanasi, Darjeeling, and hiking the Himalayas along the Nepal/India border. Visit TheExpeditioner.com for updates on the release of each new video installment.
Spend a weekend exploring the beauty surrounding Pokhara, Nepal. There are many areas in Nepal that are unaffected by the earthquake and are open for business. Some friends of ours decided to spend two days touring around the incredible areas that Pokhara has to offer. They started off in Lakeside and from there rode a motorbike 2 hours to Dhampus where the famous Annapurna Sanctuary teahouse trekking circuit begins. There they stayed the night at a teahouse and met some wonderful locals who took them in for tea and snacks. Their trekking guide then took them over to Sarangkot which overlooks the city of Pokhara and Fewa Lake. There you will find the popular launching zone for tandem and solo paragliding flights. They were able to view the city and mountains with a new perspective and...
In part five (and last) of my video travel guide to India I trek into the Himalayas along the famed Singalila Ridge, a picturesque trail that winds its way between Nepal and India, and through multiple small Himalayan villages. The highlight is the morning sunrise over the third highest mountain in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga, as well the views of Mount Everest in the far distance.
In part two of my video travel guide to India I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha. I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road. I then head to the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex in the center of town. At sunset it is a scenic, peaceful time to explore the grounds, which include a large monument built at the Bodhi Tree it...

The Five Elements are an integral part of Tibetan cosmology and essential to understanding the relatedness and interdependence of all things in the universe. e Five Elements (space/ether, earth, water, re, and air) are the essential elements or building blocks for all phenomena, not only in the physical universe but also in our physical and energetic bodies. Each element represents not only an energetic quality, but also takes physical form—and like all forms, each element exists separately but also exists interdependently. Each element needs, supports, and affects the other elements together providing a cohesive whole within an individual being. When the Five Elements are out of balance, illness, negative emotions and disharmony manifest. The Five Elements practices from the Bön lineage...
