Isla (/ˈaɪlə/ EYE-lə) is a feminine given name traditionally of primarily Scottish usage, derived from "Islay", which is the name of an island off the west coast of Scotland. It is also the name of two Scottish rivers. It was the fifth most popular name for baby girls born in Scotland in 2010 and the 70th most popular name for girls born in England and Wales in 2007. It was among the top 10 names given to girls born on the Isle of Man in 2009 and one of the top five names for girls born in Guernsey in 2010, in 2014 it was the third most popular girls name in the United Kingdom. It ranked 6th for girls born in New Zealand in 2013. It appeared in the top 1,000 names for girls in the United States for the first time in 2008, when it ranked in 619th place. Since then it has increased in popularity and ranked at No. 150 for girls born in the United States in 2014.

The name in its original form was Ilay or Islay (e.g. Ilay Campbell), and it was a masculine given name, and was rare among women. Today Isla is regarded as a distinctly female name and Islay a rare male name. Other forms of the girls' name derived from alternate historical spellings of the Scottish island's name include Ile and Ila.

Senglea

Senglea (Maltese: L-Isla [ˈlɪslɐ]), also known by its title Città Invicta (or Civitas Invicta), is a fortified city in the South Eastern Region of Malta. It is one of the Three Cities in the Grand Harbour area, the other two being Cospicua and Vittoriosa, and has a population of slightly below three thousand people. The city's title Città Invicta was given because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The name is Senglea since the grandmaster who built it, Claude de la Sengle, gave this city a part of his name.

History

The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. During the time of the Knights of St. John, Senglea was also used as a hunting area, and was known as L'Isola di San Giuliano.

In 1311 St. Julian's church or chapel was founded in Isola. This was the first building to be constructed on what later became Senglea. On 8 May 1552 the foundation stone of Fort St.Michael was laid. Work on the fort, which was designed by Architect Pedro Pardo, was completed in 1553. Construction of walled town Senglea took place during the following decade. The area, which had until the 1550s been known as Isola di San Giuliano or Isola di San Michele, was given city status by Grand Master Claude De La Sengle and was named after him.

Los is a locality situated in Ljusdal Municipality, Gävleborg County, Sweden with 387 inhabitants in 2010.

The village is known for its 18th-century cobalt mine, where Axel Fredrik Cronstedt discovered the chemical element of nickel in 1751. Today, the mine is a tourist attraction.

An 8-kilometre-wide crater on Mars was officially named after this village in 1979. The crater is located at 35.4°N and 76.3°W on the Martian surface.

Large Martian craters (greater than 60 km in diameter) are named after famous scientists and science fiction authors; smaller ones (less than 60 km in diameter) get their names from towns on Earth. Craters cannot be named for living people, and small crater names are not intended to be commemorative - that is, a small crater isn't actually named after a specific town on Earth, but rather its name comes at random from a pool of terrestrial place names, with some exceptions made for craters near landing sites.
