ISU soccer: Michigan outruns Bengals

By ISU Sports Information

Idaho State lost 4-0 at Michigan on Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 456 spectators. The Wolverines scored two goals in each half to earn the victory.

“We don’t see this level in conference,” Idaho State coach Allison Gibson said. “For us to have any success in small areas against a team like Michigan is huge for us to build on.”

Michigan led 2-0 at halftime, scoring in the seventh and 22nd minutes. The Wolverines then tacked on second half goals in the 57th and 68th minutes.

Michigan dominated the stat sheet and outshot ISU 22-4. The Wolverines also had 11 corner kicks.

“That is the toughest we’ll see on our schedule,” Gibson said. “The way we made adjustments and pressured them was really positive. I thought our forwards getting in beyond their back line early was positive. They were just shy of finishing it.”

ISU XC: Preseason conference picks released

By ISU Sports Information

The Idaho State University men’s and women’s cross country teams were pegged to finish sixth and eighth, respectively, in the preseason poll released Monday by Big Sky Conference officials.

“Overall, the talent and fitness levels are better,” ISU coach Nate Houle said. “What I really like is the team culture and attitude, in general. It is significantly better and everyone is on board. This is the type of atmosphere that has to exist for big things to occur.”

In 2016, the ISU men’s team finished fourth with 174 points for its highest finish since 2007. Wyatt Didericksen returns to the squad after leading the Bengals down the stretch last season. He was Idaho State’s second finisher in the conference championship and top finisher at the NCAA Division I Mountain Region Championship.

Sophomore Joseph Simmons also returns after representing Team USA at the World Mountain Running Championships in July. Simmons finished 22nd with a time of 30:11 in the 6.5-kilometer race.

Jesse Allen, Joseph Petty, Kyle DeGraaff, Connor Oswald and Daniel Garz also make returns to the 2017 roster. Garrett Condelario, Ricky Kuciemba and Collin Morrison enter their inaugural seasons with the team.

ISU audit report details plethora of problems at RISE Complex

By Shelbie Harris sharris@journalnet.com

POCATELLO — When computer science student Daniel Tyler landed a job at Idaho State University’s Research and Innovation in Science and Engineering Complex in 2012, he did not expect to work for free.

Tyler, age 21 at the time, and another ISU student were assigned to help the director of the complex complete a project that used X-ray technology for baggage scanning.

In the end, the facility also known as the RISE Complex proved to be not only a money loser for Tyler and his co-worker, but also for ISU. The university recently revealed that it’s still owed over $600,000 for what Tyler called a “really hush-hush” project.

Those reaping the financial rewards from the work Tyler and his co-worker performed were the Georgia-based radiation technology company ScanTech Sciences Inc. and Eric Burgett, the former director of RISE who supervised both students.

Tyler’s experience is just one story set forth in a bombshell 98-page internal audit report about the RISE compiled by ISU Director of Internal Audit Reese Jensen.

ISU Soccer: Bengals win season opener 3-0 against Chicago State

By ISU Sports Information

Idaho State scored three goals in a 20-minute span to blank Chicago State 3-0 in a road win Friday afternoon. All three goals came in the first half, and Idaho State coach Allison Gibson played 23 players.

“The awesome thing about this team is that there is literally no drop of when we make a change,” Gibson said. “Our whole mentality this year is for those players to go in and raise the level. That is the way we have been training from day one.”

The Bengals outshot Chicago State 14-8 and had nine shots on goal. Idaho State’s Michaela Didericksen led the attack with six shots and one goal.

“I thought Michaela had a great game of breaking their defense down,” Gibson said. “Sometimes as a forward, you are frustrated because you are not the one putting the ball in the back of the net. What she needs to realize is she broke them down enough where other players were open to have their chances to put the game away early.”

Meaghan Bare scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute off an assist from Christina Krieger. Didericksen scored nine minutes later off a corner kick from Tristen Spooner. The final ISU goal came in the 40th minute, when Kathryn Leachman took a pass from Corinne Sanderson and bent a shot into the top left corner of the net from nearly 18 yards outs.

ISU football: Amos builds depth atop Bengals’ QB depth chart

By Madison Guernsey mguernsey@journalnet.com

POCATELLO — With one quarterback in his fourth year, another in his third day and a defense that had to accommodate both, the Bengals clicked better than they have all summer.

Idaho State’s offense traded blows with the defense in an evenly matched scrimmage Saturday at the ICCU Practice Fields. The defense nabbed two interceptions — one of which was returned to the end zone — and special teams disrupted a field goal attempt, while the offense scored on its second drive and found the end zone with both the first- and second-string units.

“They got some turnovers, and that was good,” ISU head coach Rob Phenicie said. “The kids came out and played hard.”

Though the Bengals added quarterback No. 6 to the roster this week, only redshirt junior Tanner Gueller and redshirt sophomore Gunnar Amos played in the scrimmage.

Gueller is the incumbent starter and played with the first-team offense, and Amos made his Idaho State debut Thursday after transferring from the University of Idaho.

Gueller threw a long touchdown pass to Isaiah Walter on the offense’s final drive before halftime and hit Tanner Conner in the back of the end zone to cap a series that started in the defense’s territory. Amos led the offense’s first scoring drive, which ended on a short touchdown run by Nehemiah McFarlin, but went 3-and-out, interception, interception on his final three series.

ISU football: Amos builds depth atop Bengals’ QB depth chart

By Madison Guernsey mguernsey@journalnet.com

POCATELLO – For the first time in nearly a year, Gunnar Amos threw meaningful passes at football practice.

After a position switch put his football future in limbo, Amos found a home at Idaho State. Two-and-a-half years at the University of Idaho yielded eight game appearances and 10 pass attempts as Amos sat behind soon-to-be four-year starter Matt Linehan. A move to safety this spring prompted Amos’ departure from UI, and the Bengals coaching staff brought him in to strengthen the team’s quarterback depth.

Amos made his ISU debut Thursday during practice at the ICCU Practice Fields.

“First day went well,” Amos said. “Still a little rusty. … Today was really the first quarterback practice I’ve had since last fall. So it’s going to be a process. I’ll get back into it.”

Amos, a 2014 graduate of Coeur d’Alene High School, was recruited by Idaho State as a high school prospect.

The dual-threat slinger opted for the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Vandals over the Bengals of the Big Sky Conference.

But Amos saw his opportunities to play quarterback at Idaho dwindling. Linehan is cemented as the Vandals’ starter, and Amos’ switch to defense signaled the likely end of his signal-calling days in Moscow.
