Jaffna (Tamil: யாழ்ப்பாணம் Yalpanam, Sinhalese: යාපනය Yāpanaya) is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jaffna district located on a peninsula of the same name. With a population of 88,138, Jaffna is Sri Lanka's 12th largest city. Jaffna is approximately six miles away from Kandarodai which served as a famous emporium in the Jaffna peninsula from classical antiquity. Jaffna's suburb, Nallur served as the capital of the four centuries-long medieval Jaffna kingdom. Prior to the Sri Lankan civil war, it was Sri Lanka's second most populated city after the commercial capital Colombo. The 1980s insurgent uprising led to extensive damage, expulsion of part of the population, and military occupation. Since the end of civil war in 2009, refugees and internally displaced people have started to return to their homes and government and private sector reconstruction has begun.
Historically, Jaffna has been a contested city. It was made into a colonial port town during the Portuguese occupation of the Jaffna peninsula in 1619. The Dutch, took it from the Portuguese, only to lose it to the British in 1796. After Sri Lanka gained independence 1948, the political relationship between the minority Sri Lankan Tamils and majority Sinhalese worsened and after the Black July pogrom, civil war erupted in 1983. The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) occupied Jaffna in 1986. and from 1989 until 1995. The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) briefly occupied the city in 1987. The LTTE again occupied the city from 1989 until 1995, when the Sri Lankan military gained control.
Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.

Village food. A Family is cooking traditional food (Jaffna odiyal kool) in their 'home' post war! 'Odiyal kool' is a famous traditional food among Srilankan tamils made with mixture of seafood and local recipes including 'odiyal' flour, chilli powder and vegetables.
To many, the word ‘Jaffna’ brings memories of war, or symbolises a city struggling to rebuild itself from a conflict now over. To some, it is home ‒ to others, a home they once knew. But it is also so much more. Sivaharan Rajkumar visits the once thriving capital of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province to give us insight into the living, breathing place it is today, and shed light on the potential it could store for the future. We are inviting our readers to share their Tamil recipes. Our first is from "Uncle Regin" from London, UK. This is his quick & easy guide to making Jaffna Kool, a seafood broth that originates from the Northern province of Sri Lanka. He has adapted this traditional recipe to his dietary requirements. His recipes avoids rice. The city of Jaffna is historically a port, central to mainland Sri Lanka and the Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu & Kerala. These three regions aswell as their former colonial rulers including the Dutch, Portuguese and British have influenced the local cuisine. In episode six of Passport & Plate Sri Lanka, we follow food explorer Mahsa Fratantoni as she goes north of the region to the largely untouched area of Jaffna. Jaffna has only just recently seen the first inklings of tourism, given that it had been ravaged for years by the civil war. Mahsa takes a look at the newly opened region, and connects with a local family over Jaffna's signature spicy curries. ---- Thanks to our friends at Intrepid Travel for helping us put our itineraries together! Polonnaruwa The glory of medieval Sri Lanka is seen at Polonnaruwa, the mediaeval capital of the Island. An ancient and compact city, Polonnaruwa features 12th-century stone sculptures and the Gal Vihara – comprising three enormous Buddha figures, one reclining (it’s 13 m long), one standing and one sitting. The statues, located in a cluster along a dirt road, are revered as being amongst the most sacred monuments in Sri Lanka. There are also palace ruins, great bas-reliefs and friezes. Kandy The Hill Capital of Kandy was the last bastion of the Sinhala kings and is a charming city offering a living record of a magnificent past and is set around an attractive man-made lake in scenic hill country. It is also the site of Sri Lanka’s greatest annual spectacle, the Esala Perahera festival i...
Visit http://migrationology.com/ for more travel and food! After Colombo, Galle is one of the most visited destinations in Sri Lanka. It's an ancient city with quite a lot to see, do and eat. The first part of my day trip to Galle included eating some delicious roasted peanuts and walking around the famous Galle Fortress. I also walked past the lighthouse. For a view of the city of Galle I climbed up a building and onto the top roof area to get a nice panoramic view. Stopping at the bus station, I sampled a few Sri Lankan speciality snacks known as short eats. Fish and spices are combined then deep friend and called cutlets. They are absolutely wonderful. In the later afternoon I took a short ten minute bus ride to Unawatuna, a beautiful beach just south of Galle. The sunset was stun...
