El guitarrista de flamenco Mario Escudero, nace en Alicante en el 11 de octubre de 1928 y muere en Miami, Florida 19 de noviembre de 2004.
Cuando era niño, se trasladó a Madrid para estudiar guitarra y se hace llamar "Niño de Alicante" en sus primeras actuaciones. Dio su primer concierto en 1937 cuando tenía sólo nueve años en el teatro Galia Burdeos, siendo presentado en el espectáculo por Maurice Chevalier (dado que su familia, con motivo de la guerra civil, se había trasladado a Francia).
Hizo su debut en Madrid en 1944 en el Teatro Español con Vicente Escudero, Ramón Montoya, y otras grandes figuras del flamenco. Seguidamente recorrió toda la geografía española acompañando a los artistas más importantes de la época, para continuar después por Europa y América, decidiendo fijar su residencia en los Estados Unidos, desde donde se planificaron sus conciertos internacionales a partir de mil novecientos cincuenta y cinco, con su presentación en el Carnegie Hall neoyorquino. Se hace amigo de Sabicas y graban muchas canciones juntos.
En 1984 regresa a España y da un concierto en la Tercera Bienal de Arte Flamenco de Sevilla. Se instala en la capital andaluza donde abre una escuela de guitarra. A final de su vida vuelve a EEUU (a Miami) donde muere el 19 de Noviembre de 2004.

About the artist: 'Mario Escudero was born in Alicante, Spain on October 11, 1928. After completing his obligatory military service in Spain in the early 1950s, he migrated to the United States. He recorded over 30 albums (solo and duets) for various labels and performed with well-known flamenco artists, such as his close friend and collaborator, Sabicas. Escudero is considered one of the musicians responsible for spreading/creating public interest in flamenco music in the United States'.
About the album: "This LP presents a number of varieties of flamenco dances, most of whice are found in the Andalusian region of (southern) Spain. Mario Escudero Valero Jiménez Valverde (October 11, 1928 – November 19, 2004) was one of a handful of Spanish flamenco guitar virtuosos who helped spread flamenco beyond their homeland when they migrated to the United States in the early 1950s. After completing his obligatory military service in Spain, he toured with the best known companies of the time, and soon travelled with them to the US as first soloist.
Along with others such as Sabicas, Carlos Montoya and Juan Serrano, Escudero helped forge the viability of solo flamenco guitar as a concert instrument with lauded performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and other venues. Invited to perform at the White House for President John F. Kennedy, Escudero was counted among the best in his era; Ramón Montoya called him “the best flamenco guitarist of this new generation.”
Mario Escudero was born in Alicante, Spain on October 11, 1928. His mother was Alfonsa Josefina Valero Valverde (d. 1947, when he was 19), a Spanish singer, native of Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real (although the family had migrated there from Camas, Sevilla), and his father was Jesus Escudero Jiménez (d. 1966), a gypsy “por los cuatro costados” as it is commonly said in Spain. His family originally came from Navarra, Spain, although they also settled in Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragón), where Jesus was born. Mario was an only child.
Emigrating to San Sebastian, the family opened and ran a very successful tailor shop close to “La Concha” beach. The breakout of the civil war, however, forced them to emigrate to southern France. While in France, the Escudero family formed a flamenco group with family members and performed with artists like Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguette. His first performance, at the age of 9, was with Maurice Chevalier at the Cinema Galia in Bordeaux, France. In France, he received his first schooling and became fluent in French, as he also did in English later in life.
After the war, the family settled in Madrid, where they lived on a side street off Gran Vía (San Marcos #4). While his first teacher was his father, he took classical guitar and music lessons with Daniel Fortea (a pupil of Francisco Tárrega), and flamenco guitar lessons with Ramón Montoya. Notwithstanding, his influences also include Niño Ricardo and other contemporaries. In 1944, he debuted in Madrid at the Teatro Español with Vicente Escudero and Carmita García. In later years, he expanded his musical training studying harmony and counterpoint with Walter Piston’s well known texts, and wrote down most of his best known pieces.
He recorded three albums of duets with Sabicas (see below). He also recorded several other recording with Sabicas, his brother Diego Castellon, Enrique Montoya, Domingo Alvarado. In total, his discography includes more than 30 long play records. He often performed with flamenco dancer Anita Ramos, who played castanets and zapateados on the recordings, and the two eventually married and had three children.

Mario Escudero – Sevillanas
Mario Escudero Mario Escudero Valero Jiménez Valverde (October 11, 1928 – November 19, 2004) was one of a handful of Spanish flamenco guitar virtuosos who helped spread flamenco beyond their homeland when they migrated to the United States in the early 1950s. After completing his obligatory military service in Spain, he toured with the best known companies of the time, and soon travelled with them to the US as first soloist. Along with others such as Sabicas, Carlos Montoya and Juan Serrano, Escudero helped forge the viability of solo flamenco guitar as a concert instrument with lauded performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and other venues. El guitarrista de flamenco Mario Escudero, nace en Alicante en el 11 de octubre de 1928 y muere en Miami, Florida 19 de noviembre de 2004.
Cuando era niño, se trasladó a Madrid para estudiar guitarra y se hace llamar "Niño de Alicante" en sus primeras actuaciones. Dio su primer concierto en 1937 cuando tenía sólo nueve años en el teatro Galia Burdeos, siendo presentado en el espectáculo por Maurice Chevalier (dado que su familia, con motivo de la guerra civil, se había trasladado a Francia).
Hizo su debut en Madrid en 1944 en el Teatro Español con Vicente Escudero, Ramón Montoya, y otras grandes figuras del flamenco. Seguidamente recorrió toda la geografía española acompañando a los artistas más importantes de la época, para continuar después por Europa y América, decidiendo fijar su residencia en los Estados Unidos, desde donde se planificaron sus conciertos internacionales a partir de mil novecientos cincuenta y cinco, con su presentación en el Carnegie Hall neoyorquino. Se hace amigo de Sabicas y graban muchas canciones juntos.
En 1984 regresa a España y da un concierto en la Tercera Bienal de Arte Flamenco de Sevilla. Se instala en la capital andaluza donde abre una escuela de guitarra. A final de su vida vuelve a EEUU (a Miami) donde muere el 19 de Noviembre de 2004.

After completing his obligatory military service in Spain, he toured with the best known companies of the time, and soon travelled with them to the US as first soloist.
Along with others such as Sabicas, Carlos Montoya and Juan Serrano, Escudero helped forge the viability of solo flamenco guitar as a concert instrument with lauded performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and other venues. Invited to perform at the White House for President John F. Kennedy, Escudero was counted among the best in his era; Ramón Montoya called him “the best flamenco guitarist of this new generation.”
Mario Escudero was born in Alicante, Spain on October 11, 1928. His mother was Alfonsa Josefina Valero Valverde (d. 1947, when he was 19), a Spanish singer, native of Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real (although the family had migrated there from Camas, Sevilla), and his father was Jesus Escudero Jiménez (d. 1966), a gypsy “por los cuatro costados” as it is commonly said in Spain. His family originally came from Navarra, Spain, although they also settled in Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragón), where Jesus was born. Mario was an only child.
Emigrating to San Sebastian, the family opened and ran a very successful tailor shop close to “La Concha” beach. The breakout of the civil war, however, forced them to emigrate to southern France. While in France, the Escudero family formed a flamenco group with family members and performed with artists like Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguette. His first performance, at the age of 9, was with Maurice Chevalier at the Cinema Galia in Bordeaux, France. In France, he received his first schooling and became fluent in French, as he also did in English later in life.
After the war, the family settled in Madrid, where they lived on a side street off Gran Vía (San Marcos #4). While his first teacher was his father, he took classical guitar and music lessons with Daniel Fortea (a pupil of Francisco Tárrega), and flamenco guitar lessons with Ramón Montoya. Notwithstanding, his influences also include Niño Ricardo and other contemporaries. In 1944, he debuted in Madrid at the Teatro Español with Vicente Escudero and Carmita García. In later years, he expanded his musical training studying harmony and counterpoint with Walter Piston’s well known texts, and wrote down most of his best known pieces.
He recorded three albums of duets with Sabicas (see below). He also recorded several other recording with Sabicas, his brother Diego Castellon, Enrique Montoya, Domingo Alvarado. In total, his discography includes more than 30 long play records. He often performed with flamenco dancer Anita Ramos, who played castanets and zapateados on the recordings, and the two eventually married and had three children.

After completing his obligatory military service in Spain, he toured with the best known companies of the time, and soon travelled with them to the US as first soloist.
Along with others such as Sabicas, Carlos Montoya and Juan Serrano, Escudero helped forge the viability of solo flamenco guitar as a concert instrument with lauded performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and other venues. Invited to perform at the White House for President John F. Kennedy, Escudero was counted among the best in his era; Ramón Montoya called him “the best flamenco guitarist of this new generation.”
Mario Escudero was born in Alicante, Spain on October 11, 1928. His mother was Alfonsa Josefina Valero Valverde (d. 1947, when he was 19), a Spanish singer, native of Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real (although the family had migrated there from Camas, Sevilla), and his father was Jesus Escudero Jiménez (d. 1966), a gypsy “por los cuatro costados” as it is commonly said in Spain. His family originally came from Navarra, Spain, although they also settled in Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragón), where Jesus was born. Mario was an only child.
Emigrating to San Sebastian, the family opened and ran a very successful tailor shop close to “La Concha” beach. The breakout of the civil war, however, forced them to emigrate to southern France. While in France, the Escudero family formed a flamenco group with family members and performed with artists like Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguette. His first performance, at the age of 9, was with Maurice Chevalier at the Cinema Galia in Bordeaux, France. In France, he received his first schooling and became fluent in French, as he also did in English later in life.
After the war, the family settled in Madrid, where they lived on a side street off Gran Vía (San Marcos #4). While his first teacher was his father, he took classical guitar and music lessons with Daniel Fortea (a pupil of Francisco Tárrega), and flamenco guitar lessons with Ramón Montoya. Notwithstanding, his influences also include Niño Ricardo and other contemporaries. In 1944, he debuted in Madrid at the Teatro Español with Vicente Escudero and Carmita García. In later years, he expanded his musical training studying harmony and counterpoint with Walter Piston’s well known texts, and wrote down most of his best known pieces.
He recorded three albums of duets with Sabicas (see below). He also recorded several other recording with Sabicas, his brother Diego Castellon, Enrique Montoya, Domingo Alvarado. In total, his discography includes more than 30 long play records. He often performed with flamenco dancer Anita Ramos, who played castanets and zapateados on the recordings, and the two eventually married and had three children.

His mother was Alfonsa Josefina Valero Valverde (d. 1947, when he was 19), a Spanish singer, native of Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real (although the family had migrated there from Camas, Sevilla), and his father was Jesus Escudero Jiménez (d. 1966), a gypsy “por los cuatro costados” as it is commonly said in Spain. His family originally came from Navarra, Spain, although they also settled in Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragón), where Jesus was born. Mario was an only child.
Emigrating to San Sebastian, the family opened and ran a very successful tailor shop close to “La Concha” beach. The breakout of the civil war, however, forced them to emigrate to southern France. While in France, the Escudero family formed a flamenco group with family members and performed with artists like Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguette. His first performance, at the age of 9, was with Maurice Chevalier at the Cinema Galia in Bordeaux, France. In France, he received his first schooling and became fluent in French, as he also did in English later in life.
After the war, the family settled in Madrid, where they lived on a side street off Gran Vía (San Marcos #4). While his first teacher was his father, he took classical guitar and music lessons with Daniel Fortea (a pupil of Francisco Tárrega), and flamenco guitar lessons with Ramón Montoya. Notwithstanding, his influences also include Niño Ricardo and other contemporaries. In 1944, he debuted in Madrid at the Teatro Español with Vicente Escudero and Carmita García. In later years, he expanded his musical training studying harmony and counterpoint with Walter Piston’s well known texts, and wrote down most of his best known pieces.
He recorded three albums of duets with Sabicas (see below). He also recorded several other recording with Sabicas, his brother Diego Castellon, Enrique Montoya, Domingo Alvarado. In total, his discography includes more than 30 long play records. He often performed with flamenco dancer Anita Ramos, who played castanets and zapateados on the recordings, and the two eventually married and had three children.

Mario Escudero Mario Escudero Valero Jiménez Valverde (October 11, 1928 – November 19, 2004) was one of a handful of Spanish flamenco guitar virtuosos who helped spread flamenco beyond their homeland when they migrated to the United States in the early 1950s. After completing his obligatory military service in Spain, he toured with the best known companies of the time, and soon travelled with them to the US as first soloist. Seguidamente recorrió toda la geografía española acompañando a los artistas más importantes de la época, para continuar después por Europa y América, decidiendo fijar su residencia en los Estados Unidos, desde donde se planificaron sus conciertos internacionales a partir de mil novecientos cincuenta y cinco, con su presentación en el Carnegie Hall neoyorquino. Se hace amigo de Sabicas y graban muchas canciones juntos.
En 1984 regresa a España y da un concierto en la Tercera Bienal de Arte Flamenco de Sevilla. Se instala en la capital andaluza donde abre una escuela de guitarra. A final de su vida vuelve a EEUU (a Miami) donde muere el 19 de Noviembre de 2004.

Mario Escudero Valero Jiménez Valverde (October 11, 1928 – November 19, 2004) was one of a handful of Spanish flamenco guitar virtuosos who helped spread flamenco beyond their homeland when they migrated to the United States in the early 1950s. After completing his obligatory military service in Spain, he toured with the best known companies of the time, and soon travelled with them to the US as first soloist.
Along with others such as Sabicas, Carlos Montoya and Juan Serrano, Escudero helped forge the viability of solo flamenco guitar as a concert instrument with lauded performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and other venues. Invited to perform at the White House for President John F. Kennedy, Escudero was counted among the best in his era; Ramón Montoya called him “the best flamenco guitarist of this new generation.”
Mario Escudero was born in Alicante, Spain on October 11, 1928. His mother was Alfonsa Josefina Valero Valverde (d. 1947, when he was 19), a Spanish singer, native of Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real (although the family had migrated there from Camas, Sevilla), and his father was Jesus Escudero Jiménez (d. 1966), a gypsy “por los cuatro costados” as it is commonly said in Spain. His family originally came from Navarra, Spain, although they also settled in Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragón), where Jesus was born. Mario was an only child.
Emigrating to San Sebastian, the family opened and ran a very successful tailor shop close to “La Concha” beach. The breakout of the civil war, however, forced them to emigrate to southern France. While in France, the Escudero family formed a flamenco group with family members and performed with artists like Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguette. His first performance, at the age of 9, was with Maurice Chevalier at the Cinema Galia in Bordeaux, France. In France, he received his first schooling and became fluent in French, as he also did in English later in life.
After the war, the family settled in Madrid, where they lived on a side street off Gran Vía (San Marcos #4). While his first teacher was his father, he took classical guitar and music lessons with Daniel Fortea (a pupil of Francisco Tárrega), and flamenco guitar lessons with Ramón Montoya. Notwithstanding, his influences also include Niño Ricardo and other contemporaries. In 1944, he debuted in Madrid at the Teatro Español with Vicente Escudero and Carmita García. In later years, he expanded his musical training studying harmony and counterpoint with Walter Piston’s well known texts, and wrote down most of his best known pieces.
He recorded three albums of duets with Sabicas (see below). He also recorded several other recording with Sabicas, his brother Diego Castellon, Enrique Montoya, Domingo Alvarado. In total, his discography includes more than 30 long play records. He often performed with flamenco dancer Anita Ramos, who played castanets and zapateados on the recordings, and the two eventually married and had three children.

Granted, at an E10+ it's not as though we'll hear Mario chuckin' cusses, but Super Mario Odyssey is the first mainline Mario game to receive higher than an 'Everyone' rating from the ESRB. As spotted by GoNintendo, Mario's next outing now has a listed rating - however, the ESRB hasn't yet published its detailed rundown of reasons for the game's rating, so we don't know what's going to freak out the under-10s....
