Bassam would like to show you how the media you're exposed to is affecting your perception of, well, everything. And maybe not in a beneficial way. Hear Bassam share his idea on how we can change the way we interact with our media and each other in a way that allows for far more "truth" to be present.
Bassam was born in Egypt, lived in France and England as a child, and immigrated to the US at age 13 as a foreign student. He attended the University of Utah where he completed three degrees in Computer Science as well as an MBA. He started his professional career at a young age, programming professionally at 15, completing his first Master’s degree at 21, and awarded his first patent at 28. Bassam is currently Chief Business Officer at publicly-traded software company inContact where he leads the company’s customer and enterprise operations. During his 4-year tenure with the company, its market capitalization has grown from under $100 million to nearly $600 million. Prior to inContact, Bassam was with many leading-edge technology companies such as Omniture (acquired by Adobe), Siebel Systems (acquired by Oracle), IBM, and Phillips Electronics. Bassam is passionate about helping and mentoring others and sits on a number of civic, non- profit, and start-up technology boards. När Lina vaknar på morgonen brukar hon kolla nyheterna på mobilen, för att få reda på vad som hänt under natten. Hennes mamma brukar läsa morgontidningen.Medan hennes pappa tycker bättre om att lyssna på nyheterna på radion. Linas lillebror Leon, är inte intresserad av nyheter. Han tittar hellre på sporten.
Vad är massmedia?
Tidningar, tv, radio är olika exempel på massmedier. Vi ägnar en stor del av vår vakna tid åt olika medier.
Det vi läser, hör och ser påverkar vår bild av världen och de beslut vi fattar i vardagen.
Innan det fanns massmedier
För länge sen, innan det fanns massmedier, gick all kommunikation från människa till människa; den som berättade en nyhet vände sig direkt till den som lyssnade.
Information från andra ställen, kom inte så ofta, och när den väl gjorde det, förmedlades den nästan alltid genom någon som hade stor makt och inflytande i samhället.
Därför visste människor också väldigt lite om vad som hände ute i världen. Och de visste bara sådant som de som bestämde ville att de skulle få veta.
Massmedier idag
Direkt kommunikation mellan människor är förstås viktig än idag. Vi pratar med andra för att berätta hur vi mår och vad som händer i våra dagliga liv.
Men för att informera oss om vad som händer ute i världen och i politiken vänder vi oss oftast till medierna, och läser och lyssnar till de som jobbar där — journalister.
Granska makten
Journalisterna för inte bara vidare det som politikerna säger. De granskar också det politikerna säger och gör, och försöker ta reda på om politikerna talar sanning och om de gör det de lovat.
Utan medier skulle det därför vara svårt att veta hur våra folkvalda politiker sköter sitt jobb.
Så, medierna behövs för att demokratin ska fungera. För att medierna ska kunna granska politikerna är det nödvändigt att politikerna inte bestämmer vad medierna skall rapportera om — medierna måste vara fria och oberoende.
Massmedia i diktaturer
Länder som är diktaturer saknar oftast fria och oberoende medier. I sådana länder är det vanligt att staten förbjuder, tystar ner, eller hemlighåller viss information eller vissa budskap från att bli publicerad — de censurerar medierna.
Och om politikerna har möjlighet att censurera medierna, slutar det oftast med att medierna bara får rapportera om sånt som får regimen att framstå som bra och stark. I såna sammanhang spelar det inte så stor roll om informationen är sann eller falsk.
Om journalister bryter mot censurreglerna i en diktatur, riskerar de att hamna i fängelse, eller så riskerar tevekanalen eller tidningen att stängas ner.
Inte bara fakta
Medierna berättar inte bara vad som har hänt i världen och politiken. De kommenterar saker också. Då handlar det inte bara om fakta längre, utan också om åsikter och tolkningar. Då är medierna med och diskuterar viktiga frågor, och bidrar med argument, jämförelser och analyser.
Det offentliga samtalet
När en stor del av människorna i ett samhälle läser, lyssnar och tittar på samma medier, skapas en gemensam uppfattning om samhället.
Alla behöver inte hålla med varandra i alla frågor, men man känner till samma frågor och känner igen de viktigaste argumenten i frågorna. När medierna fungerar så, har vi ett offentligt samtal, en gemensam bild av vad samhället är, med alla sina konflikter och oenigheter.

Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
History
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad.When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.

Vad är massmedia? Tidningar, tv, radio är olika exempel på massmedier. Vi ägnar en stor del av vår vakna tid åt olika medier. Det vi läser, hör och ser påverkar vår bild av världen och de beslut vi fattar i vardagen. Innan det fanns massmedier För länge sen, innan det fanns massmedier, gick all kommunikation från människa till människa; den som berättade en nyhet vände sig direkt till den som lyssnade. Information från andra ställen, kom inte så ofta, och när den väl gjorde det, förmedlades den nästan alltid genom någon som hade stor makt och inflytande i samhället. Därför visste människor också väldigt lite om vad som hände ute i världen. Och de visste bara sådant som de som bestämde ville att de skulle få veta. Massmedier idag Direkt kommunikation mellan människor är förstås viktig än idag. Vi pratar med andra för att berätta hur vi mår och vad som händer i våra dagliga liv. Men för att informera oss om vad som händer ute i världen och i politiken vänder vi oss oftast till medierna, och läser och lyssnar till de som jobbar där — journalister. Granska makten Journalisterna för inte bara vidare det som politikerna säger. De granskar också det politikerna säger och gör, och försöker ta reda på om politikerna talar sanning och om de gör det de lovat. Utan medier skulle det därför vara svårt att veta hur våra folkvalda politiker sköter sitt jobb. Så, medierna behövs för att demokratin ska fungera. För att medierna ska kunna granska politikerna är det nödvändigt att politikerna inte bestämmer vad medierna skall rapportera om — medierna måste vara fria och oberoende. Massmedia i diktaturer Länder som är diktaturer saknar oftast fria och oberoende medier. I sådana länder är det vanligt att staten förbjuder, tystar ner, eller hemlighåller viss information eller vissa budskap från att bli publicerad — de censurerar medierna. Och om politikerna har möjlighet att censurera medierna, slutar det oftast med att medierna bara får rapportera om sånt som får regimen att framstå som bra och stark. I såna sammanhang spelar det inte så stor roll om informationen är sann eller falsk. Om journalister bryter mot censurreglerna i en diktatur, riskerar de att hamna i fängelse, eller så riskerar tevekanalen eller tidningen att stängas ner. Inte bara fakta Medierna berättar inte bara vad som har hänt i världen och politiken. De kommenterar saker också. Då handlar det inte bara om fakta längre, utan också om åsikter och tolkningar. Då är medierna med och diskuterar viktiga frågor, och bidrar med argument, jämförelser och analyser. Det offentliga samtalet När en stor del av människorna i ett samhälle läser, lyssnar och tittar på samma medier, skapas en gemensam uppfattning om samhället. Alla behöver inte hålla med varandra i alla frågor, men man känner till samma frågor och känner igen de viktigaste argumenten i frågorna. När medierna fungerar så, har vi ett offentligt samtal, en gemensam bild av vad samhället är, med alla sina konflikter och oenigheter. Bassam was born in Egypt, lived in France and England as a child, and immigrated to the US at age 13 as a foreign student. He attended the University of Utah where he completed three degrees in Computer Science as well as an MBA. He started his professional career at a young age, programming professionally at 15, completing his first Master’s degree at 21, and awarded his first patent at 28. Bassam is currently Chief Business Officer at publicly-traded software company inContact where he leads the company’s customer and enterprise operations. During his 4-year tenure with the company, its market capitalization has grown from under $100 million to nearly $600 million. Prior to inContact, Bassam was with many leading-edge technology companies such as Omniture (acquired by Adobe), Siebel Systems (acquired by Oracle), IBM, and Phillips Electronics. När Lina vaknar på morgonen brukar hon kolla nyheterna på mobilen, för att få reda på vad som hänt under natten. Hennes mamma brukar läsa morgontidningen.Medan hennes pappa tycker bättre om att lyssna på nyheterna på radion. Linas lillebror Leon, är inte intresserad av nyheter. Han tittar hellre på sporten.
Vad är massmedia?
Tidningar, tv, radio är olika exempel på massmedier. Vi ägnar en stor del av vår vakna tid åt olika medier.
Det vi läser, hör och ser påverkar vår bild av världen och de beslut vi fattar i vardagen.
Innan det fanns massmedier
För länge sen, innan det fanns massmedier, gick all kommunikation från människa till människa; den som berättade en nyhet vände sig direkt till den som lyssnade.
Information från andra ställen, kom inte så ofta, och när den väl gjorde det, förmedlades den nästan alltid genom någon som hade stor makt och inflytande i samhället.
Därför visste människor också väldigt lite om vad som hände ute i världen. Och de visste bara sådant som de som bestämde ville att de skulle få veta.
Massmedier idag
Direkt kommunikation mellan människor är förstås viktig än idag. Vi pratar med andra för att berätta hur vi mår och vad som händer i våra dagliga liv.
Men för att informera oss om vad som händer ute i världen och i politiken vänder vi oss oftast till medierna, och läser och lyssnar till de som jobbar där — journalister.
Granska makten
Journalisterna för inte bara vidare det som politikerna säger. De granskar också det politikerna säger och gör, och försöker ta reda på om politikerna talar sanning och om de gör det de lovat.
Utan medier skulle det därför vara svårt att veta hur våra folkvalda politiker sköter sitt jobb.
Så, medierna behövs för att demokratin ska fungera. För att medierna ska kunna granska politikerna är det nödvändigt att politikerna inte bestämmer vad medierna skall rapportera om — medierna måste vara fria och oberoende.
Massmedia i diktaturer
Länder som är diktaturer saknar oftast fria och oberoende medier. I sådana länder är det vanligt att staten förbjuder, tystar ner, eller hemlighåller viss information eller vissa budskap från att bli publicerad — de censurerar medierna.
Och om politikerna har möjlighet att censurera medierna, slutar det oftast med att medierna bara får rapportera om sånt som får regimen att framstå som bra och stark. I såna sammanhang spelar det inte så stor roll om informationen är sann eller falsk.
Om journalister bryter mot censurreglerna i en diktatur, riskerar de att hamna i fängelse, eller så riskerar tevekanalen eller tidningen att stängas ner.

Bassam was born in Egypt, lived in France and England as a child, and immigrated to the US at age 13 as a foreign student. He attended the University of Utah where he completed three degrees in Computer Science as well as an MBA. He started his professional career at a young age, programming professionally at 15, completing his first Master’s degree at 21, and awarded his first patent at 28. Bassam is currently Chief Business Officer at publicly-traded software company inContact where he leads the company’s customer and enterprise operations. During his 4-year tenure with the company, its market capitalization has grown from under $100 million to nearly $600 million. Prior to inContact, Bassam was with many leading-edge technology companies such as Omniture (acquired by Adobe), Siebel Systems (acquired by Oracle), IBM, and Phillips Electronics. Hennes mamma brukar läsa morgontidningen.Medan hennes pappa tycker bättre om att lyssna på nyheterna på radion. Linas lillebror Leon, är inte intresserad av nyheter. Han tittar hellre på sporten.
Vad är massmedia?
Tidningar, tv, radio är olika exempel på massmedier. Vi ägnar en stor del av vår vakna tid åt olika medier.
Det vi läser, hör och ser påverkar vår bild av världen och de beslut vi fattar i vardagen.
Innan det fanns massmedier
För länge sen, innan det fanns massmedier, gick all kommunikation från människa till människa; den som berättade en nyhet vände sig direkt till den som lyssnade.
Information från andra ställen, kom inte så ofta, och när den väl gjorde det, förmedlades den nästan alltid genom någon som hade stor makt och inflytande i samhället.
Därför visste människor också väldigt lite om vad som hände ute i världen. Och de visste bara sådant som de som bestämde ville att de skulle få veta.
Massmedier idag
Direkt kommunikation mellan människor är förstås viktig än idag. Vi pratar med andra för att berätta hur vi mår och vad som händer i våra dagliga liv.
Men för att informera oss om vad som händer ute i världen och i politiken vänder vi oss oftast till medierna, och läser och lyssnar till de som jobbar där — journalister.
Granska makten
Journalisterna för inte bara vidare det som politikerna säger. De granskar också det politikerna säger och gör, och försöker ta reda på om politikerna talar sanning och om de gör det de lovat.
Utan medier skulle det därför vara svårt att veta hur våra folkvalda politiker sköter sitt jobb.
Så, medierna behövs för att demokratin ska fungera. För att medierna ska kunna granska politikerna är det nödvändigt att politikerna inte bestämmer vad medierna skall rapportera om — medierna måste vara fria och oberoende.
Massmedia i diktaturer
Länder som är diktaturer saknar oftast fria och oberoende medier. I sådana länder är det vanligt att staten förbjuder, tystar ner, eller hemlighåller viss information eller vissa budskap från att bli publicerad — de censurerar medierna.
Och om politikerna har möjlighet att censurera medierna, slutar det oftast med att medierna bara får rapportera om sånt som får regimen att framstå som bra och stark. I såna sammanhang spelar det inte så stor roll om informationen är sann eller falsk.
Om journalister bryter mot censurreglerna i en diktatur, riskerar de att hamna i fängelse, eller så riskerar tevekanalen eller tidningen att stängas ner.
Inte bara fakta
Medierna berättar inte bara vad som har hänt i världen och politiken. De kommenterar saker också. Då handlar det inte bara om fakta längre, utan också om åsikter och tolkningar. Då är medierna med och diskuterar viktiga frågor, och bidrar med argument, jämförelser och analyser.

När en stor del av människorna i ett samhälle läser, lyssnar och tittar på samma medier, skapas en gemensam uppfattning om samhället.
Alla behöver inte hålla med varandra i alla frågor, men man känner till samma frågor och känner igen de viktigaste argumenten i frågorna. När medierna fungerar så, har vi ett offentligt samtal, en gemensam bild av vad samhället är, med alla sina konflikter och oenigheter.
