The first performance on June 17 was not filmed, so the band was persuaded to perform the song again on the next day. Janis Joplin
Janis Lyn Joplin (/ˈdʒɒplɪn/; January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) was an American singer-songwriter who first rose to fame in the mid 1960s as the lead singer of the psychedelic/acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with her own backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band.
Her first ever large scale public performance was at the Monterey Pop Festival, which led to her becoming very popular and one of the major attractions at the Woodstock festival and the Festival Express train tour. Joplin charted five singles; other popular songs include: "Down on Me," "Summertime," "Piece of My Heart," "Ball 'n' Chain," "Maybe," "To Love Somebody," "Kozmic Blues," "Work Me, Lord," "Cry Baby," "Mercedes Benz," and her only number one hit, "Me and Bobby McGee."
Joplin was well known for her performing ability and skill as a multi-instrumentalist. Her fans referred to her stage presence as "electric"; at the height of her career, she was known as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul." Known as "Pearl" among her friends, she was also a painter, dancer and music arranger. Rolling Stone ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004 and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Joplin remains one of the top-selling musicians in the United States, with Recording Industry Association of America certifications of 15.5 million albums sold in the USA.

Me and Bobby McGee
"Me and Bobby McGee" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster, originally performed by Roger Miller. Others performed the song later, including the Grateful Dead, Kristofferson himself, and Janis Joplin who topped the U.S. singles chart with the song in 1971 after her death, making the song the second posthumous number-one single in U.S. chart history after "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding. Billboard ranked Joplin's version as the No. 11 song for 1971.
History
In the original version of the song, Bobby is a woman. Joplin, who was allegedly a lover (but also a good friend and mentor) of Kristofferson's from the beginning of her career to her death, changed the sex and a few of the lyrics in her cover. Kristofferson stated he did not write this song for her, but the song is associated with her, especially in the line "Somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away."
In a conversation with director Monte Hellman called "Somewhere Near Salinas" (available in the supplements to the Criterion Collection DVD release of Two-Lane Blacktop, a film in which Kristofferson's version is used on the soundtrack), Kristofferson stated that the film La Strada was an inspiration for the song and remarked on the irony of how a song inspired by a classic road movie should come to be used in another.

"MIDSUMMER MADNESS " is reflected in the recurring element of the magic fern, a metaphor (both in the film and in real life) for love. The question posed by the film is: can a search for love ever be successful? Each story deals with this question. An answer is provided at the film's conclusion in a humorous and unforgettable way: we see the legendary fern, glowing magically in a meadow. It exists after all! Then a cow ambles along and eats it. The deeper message, which is not obvious to the audience, is therefore: Yes, a search for love can be successful, though we are generally unaware of how to deal with it.

Cheap Thrills was released in the summer of 1968, one year after their debut album, and reached #1 on the Billboard charts in its eighth week in October. It kept the #1 spot for eight (nonconsecutive) weeks while the single, "Piece of My Heart", also became a huge hit. Cheap Thrills was released in the summer of 1968, one year after their debut album, and reached #1 on the Billboard charts in its eighth week in October. It kept the #1 spot for eight (nonconsecutive) weeks while the single, "Piece of My Heart", also became a huge hit. By the end of the year it was the most successful album of 1968, having sold nearly a million copies. The success was short-lived however, as Joplin left the group for a solo career in December 1968

This video is an excerpt of a 2016 oral history interview with master percussionist Warren Smith conducted by Steve Rowland. Videography, Chris Daniel. Smith has a broad knowledge of many percussion styles and plays jazz, classical, Broadway and others. He has an extraordinary legacy, having played with Janis Joplin, Charlie Haden,Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, and Quincy Jones. He was a member of Max Roach's powerful percussion orchestra "M'Boom". He has worked as a Broadway orchestra musician and was an instrumental part of the NYC loft scene of the 1970's playing with Sam Rivers, Andrew White, Julius Hemphill and many others.

He has an extraordinary legacy, having played with Janis Joplin, Charlie Haden,Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, and Quincy Jones. He was a member of Max Roach's powerful percussion orchestra "M'Boom". He has worked as a Broadway orchestra musician and was an instrumental part of the NYC loft scene of the 1970's playing with Sam Rivers, Andrew White, Julius Hemphill and many others.

Orpheus played many sold-out concerts throughout the United States, sharing the stage with artists such as The Who, Led Zeppelin, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Jeff Beck, The Rascals and Janis Joplin - to name a few.
Their classic 1968 hit single, "Can't Find the Time", was covered in 2000 by Hootie & The Blowfish for the soundtrack to the Farrelly Brothers comedy "Me, Myself & Irene" starring Jim Carrey and Rene Zellweger.
Their second album, Ascending, reached no. 10 in the 1968 Playboy magazine Jazz and Pop Reader Poll, "Vocal Album of the Year".
The group recorded the title track "Little Sister" for the 1969 MGM movie "Marlowe," starring James Garner, Rita Moreno and Bruce Lee.
Orpheus reunited in 1988 and performed at the Boston Music Awards with the late Brad Delp, (lead singer of the platinum selling group Boston).
Orpheus was invited to record at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in 1988. The material from these sessions was later included on Bruce Arnold's CD titled "Orpheus Again" released in 2010.
In 1968 Actor/Comedian Chevy Chase toured Southern Universities with a band posing as Orpheus.
The group was one of the first contemporary music bands to be asked to perform at The Museum of Modern Art in 1969.
Orpheus albums and singles were released worldwide reaching the Top 20 in Brazil, Britain, France and the Philippines.
The band's music has been lauded by entertainment industry notables such as Elvis Costello, Laura Nyro, Steely Dan, Chevy Chase, The B52's, The Cars, Chicago, Aerosmith, Boston, Hootie & The Blowfish, Matthew Sweet, Miles Davis, John Stewart, David Freiberg, St. Etienne, Edwin McCain, Jimmy Webb, Phil Ramone, Questlove, Peter & Bobby Farrelly, Tony Bennett, The J.
