Wide of Russian base across the river STORYLINE Georgia's Minister of Environment Protection and Natural Resources accused Russians on Sunday of damaging the natural resources of a protected area near the city of Poti. Irakli Ghvaladze showed AP television the area on the banks of Georgia's Rioni river where he asserts the damage is being carried out. The Rioni is the principal river of western Georgia and runs at the edge of the city of Poti. AP Television footage showed Russian tanks and tents along the banks of the Rioni. "You see now Russian occupation troops here..... there is the territory of Kolkheti national park," Ghvaladze said as he pointed to the area across the river. "They (Russians) illegally cut trees from this park, this is (a) protected area," he said. Ghvaladze also said Russian troops use illegal nets to fish, where fishing of a certain protected species is illegal. "They destroy everything here, especially our national parks, and forests and rivers and everything." Russian forces remain entrenched near the Georgian port of Poti, following a brief war earlier this month between Russia and Georgia. United States and other western powers have said their presence is in violation of a ceasefire brokered by France. Moscow has claimed that the deal allowed them to occupy "security zones" in Georgia. But the move prompted Georgia to sever diplomatic ties with Moscow. It claims, as does the West, that Russia is violating the European Union agreement. The crisis started earlier this month when on August 7, Georgian forces launched a devastating rocket and artillery assault on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, one of two breakaway regions in the country. Russia mounted a massive military response, sending hundreds of armoured vehicles south across Georgia's border and driving the Georgians deep into their own territory.
