Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a 1988 American live action/animated fantasy-comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The screenplay by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman is based on Gary K. Wolf's 1981 novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, which depicts a world in which cartoon characters interact directly with human beings and animals.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which blends live action with animation, stars Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant, a private detective, and Charles Fleischer as the voice of Roger Rabbit, a second-banana cartoon character. The plot takes place in 1947, when Roger is framed for the murder of a wealthy Hollywood businessman and he teams with Valiant to find the culprit. The film co-stars Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom, the villain; Kathleen Turner as the uncredited voice of Jessica Rabbit, Roger's cartoon wife; and Joanna Cassidy as Dolores, the detective's girlfriend.
Walt Disney Productions purchased the film rights to the story in 1981. Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman wrote two drafts of the script before Disney brought in executive producer Steven Spielberg, along with his production company, Amblin Entertainment. Zemeckis was brought on to direct the film. Canadian animator Richard Williams was hired to supervise the animation sequences. Production was moved from Los Angeles to Elstree Studios in England to accommodate Williams and his group of animators. While filming, the production budget began to rapidly expand and the shooting schedule ran longer than expected.

It's 1947 Hollywood and Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins, Mona Lisa) a down-on-his-luck detective, is hired to find proof that Marvin Acme, gag factory mogul and owner of Toontown, is playing hanky-panky with femme fatale Jessica Rabbit (Voice from Kathleen Turner, Romancing the Stone), wife of Maroon Cartoon superstar, Roger Rabbit (Voice from Charles Fleischer, A Nightmare on Elm Street). When Acme is found murdered, all fingers point to Roger, and the sinister, power-hungry Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future) is on a mission to bring Roger to justice. Roger begs the Toon-hating Valiant to find the real evildoer and the plot thickens as Eddie uncovers scandal after scandal and realizes the very existence of Toontown is at stake!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the film that expertly mixed cartoons with live action, is loosely based on the Gary Wolf book Who Censored Roger Rabbit. Now it’s time for us to read between the lines to find the differences between the book and the film. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Who Censored Roger Rabbit are both mystery stories that merge the real world with the toon world. One involves the killing of movie executive while the other surrounds the shooting of the title character. While the movie and book have some similarities as they both involve private eye Eddie Valiant trying to solve a murder, but a vast number of plot points (particularly the victim) and character attributes were altered from the book to the movie. At that, it’s time pull back the proverb...
Here is the opening cartoon from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." I love this sequence because I didn't realize it was actually part of a filming scene until I heard the director yelling 'Cut!' Nevertheless, it's hilarious watching Roger getting pummeled by many things while trying to save Baby Herman.

For Future Cinema's production of Roger Rabbit we created a fully interactive live toon puppet of Bongo the gorilla doorman. A hidden performer could interact with the audience by controlling Bongos eyes and emotions while his voice automatically controlled Bongos facial movements. The actor could see the audience from a hidden camera that fed into the puppet software. We also created many animations for the huge hidden gauze projection screen seen on stage that were bought to life by the performers.
