Moroccan Jews (Arabic: اليهود المغاربة, Hebrew: יהדות מרוקו) are the Jews who live or lived in the area of North Africa known as Morocco. The first Jews migrated to this area after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem and settled among the Berbers. They were later met by a second wave of migration from the Iberian peninsula in the period immediately preceding and following the 1492 Alhambra Decree, when the Jews were expelled from kingdoms of Spain, and soon afterwards, from Portugal as well. This second immigration wave deeply modified Moroccan jewry, who largely embraced the Andalusian Sephardic liturgy, making the Moroccan Jews switch to a mostly Sephardic identity.
At its peak in the 1940s, Morocco's Jewish population exceeded 250,000, but following Operation Yachin this number has been reduced to approximately 2,000-2,500. The vast majority of Moroccan Jews now live in Israel, where they constitute the second-largest Jewish community (approximatively 1 million). Other communities are found in France, Canada, Spain, the United States and Venezuela.
The Jews (/dʒuːz/;Hebrew: יְהוּדִים ISO 259-3 Yehudim, Israeli pronunciation [jehuˈdim]), also known as the Jewish people, are an ethnoreligious group originating from the Israelites, or Hebrews, of the Ancient Near East. Jewish ethnicity, nationhood and religion are strongly interrelated, as Judaism is the traditional faith of the Jewish nation, while its observance varies from strict observance to complete nonobservance.
The Jews trace their ethnogenesis to the part of the Levant known as the Land of Israel. The discovery of the Merneptah Stele confirms the existence of the people of Israel in Canaan as far back as the 13th century BCE. Since then, while maintaining rule over their homeland during certain periods—such as under the Kingdom of Israel, the Kingdom of Judah, the Hasmonean Dynasty, and the Herodian Kingdom—Jews also suffered various exiles and occupations from their homeland—from Ancient Egyptian Occupation of the Levant, to Assyrian Captivity and Exile, to Babylonian Captivity and Exile, to Greek Occupation and Exile, to the Roman Occupation and Exile. These events subjected Jews to slavery, pogroms, cultural assimilation, forced expulsions, genocide, and more, scattering Jews all around the world, in what is known today as the Jewish diaspora.
Morocco (i/məˈrɒkoʊ/; Arabic: المغرب al-Maġrib; Berber: ⵍⵎⴰⵖⵔⵉⴱl'Meġrib; French: Maroc), officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Geographically, Morocco is characterized by a rugged mountainous interior and large portions of desert. It is one of only three countries (with Spain and France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The Arabic name al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyah (Arabic: المملكة المغربية, meaning "The Western Kingdom") and Al-Maghrib (Arabic: المغرب, meaning "The West") are commonly used as alternate names.
Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million and an area of 446,550 km2 (172,410 sq mi). Its political capital is Rabat, although the largest city is Casablanca; other major cities include Marrakesh, Tangier, Tetouan, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, and Nador. A historically prominent regional power, Morocco has a history of independence not shared by its neighbours. Its distinct culture is a blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African, and European influences.
Judaism (from Latin: Iudaismus, derived from Greek Ἰουδαϊσμός, originally from Hebrew יהודה, Yehudah, "Judah"; in Hebrew: יהדות, Yahadut, the distinctive characteristics of the Judean ethnos) encompasses the religion, philosophy, culture and way of life of the Jewish people. Judaism is an ancient monotheistic religion, with the Torah as its foundational text (part of the larger text known as the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible), and supplemental oral tradition represented by later texts such as the Midrash and the Talmud. Judaism is considered by religious Jews to be the expression of the covenantal relationship that God established with the Children of Israel.

This documentary was filmed in the Jewish quarters of the Medina of Essaouira formerly known as Mogador. In the 18th century, even before and to a time period after that, this portion of the fortified city, was home to a beautiful striving Israelite community. Who were the Jews of the Medina in Mogador? Who were favoured and respected by some of the Sultan’s of the past, including Mohammed Ben Abdallah al-Khatib, the grandchild of the famous black Sultan, known as the warrior King, Moulay Ismail ibn Sharif. The answer to the identity of the Jews who once lived in the Medina is found in a restored synagogue, truth cannot be hidden.

Thank you for contributing!: https://www.youcaring.com/preservingjewishcemeteryinmarrakechmorocco-811396 This is the Beit Mo'ed LeKol Chai Cemetery in Marrakech, Morocco. Over the last year and a half Monsieur (Mr.) Ohayon, a local humble Jew, has spearheaded a voluntary campaign to restore the 20,000 Jewish graves to dignity, including 650 graves of Tzadikim and Gdolei HaDor! Whereas the dilapidated cemetery was in use as a local dump, filled with trash, grass and weeds up to the hips and horrific huge snakes crawling around, it is now a respectable resting place from some of the sweetest Jews and holiest leaders of late Moroccan Jewish history, ancestors to many of our friends. He can't do it alone and we can help! This mitzvah is also of the highest order of selflessness as it is "ches...
